Friday 7-13-2018 jive

Good evening, it's Friday, July 13th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a look at some of what's going on in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, there’s an opening reception for this month’s photography exhibit by Ed Friedman. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, cafe nine's Friday 5pm Happy Hour set features Lynn Malavolte. Friday Night Café Nine’s main event features The Telle, Glambat, and Orphy.  Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends this week. Saturday night brings a Jazz Week Fundraiser with Brian Charette.  The Café Nine Sunday Buzz Matinee features Kinky Friedman and Brian Molnar. Up in Hartford,  black-eyed sally's offers original blues and more on Friday with the Jake Kulak Band. Saturday’s special event is The Ze-Conn, a celebration of the music of Warren Zevon, with Brian MacDonald and an All-Star Band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

At the Russell Library Check the website for activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. The library sponsors the Summer Meal Service for kids Mon through Fri at 1 pm. www.russelllibrary.org

Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford at 6 pm.

The Riverfront Food Truck Festival returns to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza this weekend starting on Thursday at noon. Enjoy food from regional food trucks, along with musical entertainment including The Kenny Mehler Band, LA Backstage Pass, Sarah and the Sundays, and more. At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown, Check out the website for kids’ events all week, including a Creativity Project and a Where’s Waldo? Scavenger hunt next Monday. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

At Infinity Hall in Hartford today, you can hear blues rock guitar with a Cajun flavor presented by Tab Benoit.  Shelby Lynne performs at Infinity Hall Hartford Friday night. The James Hunter Six plays grooved out Jazz on Saturday at Infinity Hall Norfolk. Sunday afternoon in the Bistro you can catch Allysen Callery and Sunday evening on the main stage it’s Cracker. www.infinityhall.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Nuclear Unicorn, Death Bear, The Shape and more tonight at 8 pm. On Saturday they celebrate their 21st Birthday Extravanganza with PUS, The Abductors, Dumpster Fire, and Insano Vision. There’s a Memorial Concert on Sunday at 3 to honor Ray Smith, with food truck goodies and performances by Murder Monday, Over the Line, and more. Details at www.facebook.com/CherryStreetStation/

Oddfellows Playhouse and Youth Theater in Middletown hosts a Fun, Fund-Raiser, with a Family Barn Dance, Saturday at 5:15, with caller Bill Fischer and his band. There will be food and music and special guest performances by the Children’s Circus staff. Details at www.oddfellows.org

Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who will take us on back to the 30’s and forty’s with a mix of big band, jumping jazz,  rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school soul with a touch of Latin and African music, plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and R&B spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yow-za with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick off our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
