Tuesday 1-30-18 jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday, January 30th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a glimpse of some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Russell Library in Middletown, The Classic Mystery Book discussion group meets this evening to talk about “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall.  There’s an Introduction to Computers workshop Wednesday afternoon, and The Girls Who Code Club holds its regular meeting at 6 pm. There’s also a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society. Thursday at 6:30 there’s a public meeting to discuss the future of the Middletown Green Community Center. A Vision Boards for Adults workshop happens on Friday at 1 pm, and on Saturday morning you can explore French and Spanish language classes for your kids.  Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine, tonight’s bill features Superbird Collective, Coastal Notion, and Patrick Collins. Wednesday, it’s Lola Pistola and Witch Hair. Thursday’s headliners are Jeff Wickun and S.G. Carlson. Friday’s Happy Hour features Sean Conlon, followed by the late show with Murphy’s Law, Flapjack Attack, and Pull It Together. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show features The Hickups and The Bandidos. The Sunday Buzz Matinee has Des Demonas and Dust Hat.http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday nights. The Community Blues Jam happens on Wednesday with guest Tim McDonald, this week. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday they debut Rock Solid Alibi.  It’s blues on Saturday with the Chris Bergson Band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts James T. Powers, presenting “Seeing the Past: Stories on the Trial of a Yankee Millwright,” on Wednesday at 7 pm. On Thursday at 7 pm, mystery writer Karen Olson presents, “Vanished.” www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to an opening reception for the photography exhibit of “A Body in Fukushima: Recent Work,” Thursday at 4 pm at the Zilkha Gallery. You can explore a collaborative, durational performance and installation project, between systems and grounds, on Saturday and Sunday at the Russell House. At The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation happens on Saturday morning, and in the evening, the Secondary Messengers brings you jazz with a hard bop idiom.  The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Passing It On: Traditional Arts Apprenticeships, Tuesday through Saturday through March 10th. Enjoy photographs of artists, and learn more about the apprenticeship program. www.chs.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Final Year,” a documentary about the last year of Obama’s foreign policy team, and “Django,” a French film about a jazz guitarist in Nazi-occupied Paris, through Thursday. They are also continuing their extended run Loving Vincent through Sunday. The afternoon movie is “Molly’s Game,” based on the true story of an Olympic-class skier running an illegal poker scam. On Friday they open “Vazante,” a Portuguese historical film about a young woman forced to marry a slave trader. They also open “British Arrows Awards,” a celebration of innovative British advertising. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Square,” a Swedish film about conflict between the classes, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open Oscar-nominated “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” about a defiant woman trying to solve her daughter’s murder. The Connecticut Science Center is screening two films in 3D all week at the Hoffman Foundation Science Theater in Hartford. You can enjoy “Dream Big: Engineering Our World,” about inventions and structures from across the globe, or National Geographic’s “Extreme Weather: Powerful Forces Are Colliding.” Details at www.ctsciencecenter.org 

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford is screening “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story,” throughout the weekend. From 6-8pm it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music with a roots influence plus a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

At 8pm stay tuned for The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, A weekly spotlight of Connecticut arts and culture.

From 9-10pm IT’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10 stick and stay for Bitchin' with Madam Ovary, WESU's feminist radio hour packed with reporting on current events, interviews with student artists and activists, and music by women and queer artists.

From 11-midnight, tonight its “Hey you like it when…?” with DJ Magilla Madman and DJ Formerly Known as Cheese - a genre bending show focused on recent trends in music, production, and
artist behavior.

From midnight-1am  stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am its The Make Out Room with joseph offering some radio love in The Make Out Room, the fictional club of your most amorous dreams.

At 2am its Middletown by Moonlight with DJ Monsoon Moon presenting a tour of the rare and obscure best albums from around the globe.

We kick off our weekday program at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR, followed by a diverse mix of talk radio from Pacifica and NPR throughout the day.
