Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, January 18th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

On Thursday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, they’ve got Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation. On Friday, at The Buttonwood you can enjoy blues, psychedelic guitar, and more with Shane Scarazzini & EightFingers. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation happens on Saturday morning, and a there’s a Teen Open Mic at 3 pm Saturday at the Buttonwood. The Saturday evening show brings you Ringrose & Freeman offering Celtic music, fiddling, and more. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings and you can enjoy the art exhibit, Mystic Collages, by featured artist Flo Bartosiak, throughout the month. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, tonight, Café Nine present, it’s The Quest, Jonsey, Shy, and more. Friday’s Happy Hour performance is a Mike Damico Birthday Bash with Kriss Santala and Lonesome Billy Calash. Friday night’s main event at The Nine features Goodnight Blue Moon with Stefanie Austin and The Palomino Club. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends Saturday night Café Nine features tongue in cheek rockers, Satanicide, appearing with The Zambonis and The Hymans. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through Thursday Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Florida Project,” about a family in a budget motel near Disney World.  “In the Fade (Aus Dem Nichts),” a German film about a mother who loses her child in a Neo-Nazi bomb attack also ends its runs tomorrow (Thurs). Battle of the Sexes ends its run as Real Art Ways afternoon film, tomorrow (Thurs). Weekend offerings include “Rebels on Pointe,” a documentary about the drag group Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Also kicking off a run at Real Art Ways this weekend is: In Between, which tells the story of three very different Palestinian women living together in Tel Aviv, as they try to find a balance between traditional and modern culture. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford they open “Heat and Dust,” a restored James Ivory film about a woman’s trip to India to learn about her scandalous aunt. at 9:30 it’s Crispix with Chris, from indie rock to folk to electronic and more, Chris picks whatever he's feeling this week to share with you.

At 11pm, Franco keeping the music going until 3am with his mix of dance music from the 70s & 80s

From 3-4am we’ll rebroadcast todays’ noontime episode of Democracy now!
