Good evening, it's Tuesday, January 2nd,  Happy New Year! This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Tonight In New Haven, Café Nine presents a double bill featuring DISCO TEEN 66 and MEATBALL SUBMACHINE GUN. There’s a Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday at Café Nine hosted by Dan Rice. On Thursday, it’s Joe Miller & The Hipshakers, appearing along with Bronson Rock. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns, and the late show is a Birthday Bash for Greg Sherrod, featuring his band, along with Laura Dowding, and Jon Thomas. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show headlines Tier, and Every Branch. The Sunday Buzz Matinee is a Birthday Tribute to Elvis, and Sunday night you can catch The Irascibles, and Dust Hat. http://www.cafenine.com

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown offers Laughter Yoga this evening and Kanaha Yoga tomorrow/Wednesday morning. Friday, Story City Troupe takes the Buttonwood stage. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation is back on Saturday morning. Saturday night features the Lost Acres String Band performing fiddle tunes, blues, swing and more at The Buttonwood. There’s a reception Sunday afternoon for the month-long January art exhibit, Mystic Collages, by featured artist Flo Bartosiak. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings. www.buttonwood.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Florida Project,” about a family in a budget motel near Disney World, and “Brimstone and Glory,” about the National Pyrotechnic Festival in, Mexico, through Thursday. They also continue “Quest – A Portrait of an American Family,” a documentary about a North Philadlephia family and their community of hip-hop artists. Right after the jive at Five stay tuned for nearly three hours of Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

At 8pm, The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry offers a weekly dose of live and local Connecticut arts and music.

From 9-10pm it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10pm it’s Wes Sports and Beyond with DJ Steven featuring Sports Talk and interviews.
From 11-2am its Back down the Bayou from pacifica

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am
at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
