Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Wednesday, January 3rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Tonight In New Haven, CafĂ© Nine it’s Joe Miller & The Hipshakers, appearing along with Bronson Rock. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns, and the late show is a Birthday Bash for Greg Sherrod, featuring his band, along with Laura Dowding, and Jon Thomas. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show headlines Tier, and Every Branch. The Sunday Buzz Matinee is a Birthday Tribute to Elvis, and Sunday night you can catch The Irascibles, and Dust Hat. http://www.cafenine.com

On Friday, at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, Story City Troupe takes the stage. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation is back on Saturday morning. Saturday night features the Lost Acres String Band performing fiddle tunes, blues, swing and more at The Buttonwood. There’s a reception Sunday afternoon for the month-long January art exhibit, Mystic Collages, by featured artist Flo Bartosiak. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings. www.buttonwood.org

At the Russell Library in Middletown,  There’s a Vision Boards for Adults workshop on Friday morning. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

The Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown hosts more music events this week. Harmony Woods performs this Friday at 7 pm. On Saturday at the MAC650 you can catch Ovlov, Kal Marks, Don Gero, and Bilge Rat take the stage. Details at www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Infinity Hall brings you The Cast of Beatlemania on Friday at 8:30 pm. Enjoy pop and rock on Saturday with the Albert Lee Band. The Sounds of Frank on Sunday, featuring John Cooper performs Sunday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Florida Project,” about a family in a budget motel near Disney World, and “Brimstone and Glory,” about the National Pyrotechnic Festival in, Mexico, through Thursday. They also continue “Quest – A Portrait of an American Family,” a documentary about a North Philadlephia family and their community of hip-hop artists.
