Good evening, it's Wednesday, February 19th . This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, Thursday’s offering is Shaking the Tree, a Gong Bath and Sound Healing, and on Friday Rice Jenkins presents Centennial Cole: 100 Years of Nat “King” Cole. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by All the Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression at 1 pm. 
Singer/songwriter Randy Moses brings his House of Moses LIVE band to the Buttonwood on Saturday night, and on Sunday there’s a Reiki Share at 2 pm. You can view the current exhibition throughout the month that includes the photography of Ryan Martin Callanan and Heather Cohn. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday, it’s another session of Words and Music. Thursday’s bill includes Dumlords, Haunted Continents, and Where The Wild Live. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolti, and in the evening you can catch Grizzlor, TRVSS, and Hylda. The Saturday Jazz Jam Session is led by the Café 9 All-Stars, followed by the late show with Gutter Demons and Johnny Cab. The Sunday Buzz matinée brings you Jeff Przech, Dennis Fancher, and more, and they round out the weekend later with Olive Tiger, Rosu Lup, and Canyon. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, it's the  Wednesday Community Blues Jam with Tom Forst, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. On Friday they bring you pianist Anthony Geraci and the Boston Blues All Stars, and it’s blues-based rock and roll on Saturday with Mambo Sons. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Up in Hartford,  it’s Karaoke Night this evening/Wednesday at The Russell. Pratt Street hosts a pop-up pie session on Thursday from noon to 4 pm to celebrate National Cherry Pie Day, and Haley in the Water perform Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” at the Arch Street Tavern in the evening. The seven-week indoor music series at City Place continues Friday at noon with Brandt Taylor, and in the evening the Knox Greenhouse hosts an Urban Greenhouse Party with craft beer and a silent auction. 
You can catch The Natural Soul and special guest Nikita Friday night at the Arch Street Tavern, and the Yard Goats hold their 2020 auditions for a mascot Saturday afternoon at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. 
The Webster hosts Gabriel and the Apocalypse, Jump the Fall, and more on Saturday night, and The Alchemystics and Phat A$stonaut are at the Arch Street Tavern. The Wadsworth Atheneum holds a Jazz Brunch on Sunday morning. Full details on all of these events can be found at www.hartford.com/events/

Tonight/Wednesday at the State House Cabaret in New Haven,  it’s techno and EDM at their RAVE, with Phony Villiain, Zaidokhi, Anteo Fabris, and more. Dooley-O presents a Back Room Party on Thursday, and on Friday they bring you No Mind/ Tales of Joy, and Chris Daly. They’re holding a Bloodroot Fundraiser Celebration on Saturday, and on Sunday you’re invited to a CT Bellydance Salon with hosts Elisheva and Joy. www.statehousepresents.com

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm, and on Thursday at 5 pm teens are invited to help create a Black History Month Collage. At 7 pm, Nick Bellatoni presents “Long Journeys Home,” a series of intergenerational stories of indigenous life, and on Saturday morning Faith Jackson hosts a Black History Month event including poetry, music, and special tributes. The Middletown Arts and Culture Office announces that the the CT Office of the Arts is holding a Teaching Artist Workshop on Thursday at Oddfellow’s Playhouse, where Trenda Loftin will speak on “Cultivating Equity & Inclusion.” Sounds and Scenarios, Pull the Curtain, Long Autumn and more are performing at the MAC650 Gallery and Artist Co-Op on Friday evening.

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors free events this week, and continues the sound exhibition of Beethoven’s 9 th symphony daily at the Olin Library. The Ad Hoc Bach collective presents Bach cantatas on Thursday at Memorial Chapel. The French 75 Dixieland Jazz Band performs Sunday afternoon at The Russell House. You’re invited to purchase tickets for Beethoven’s 250 th Birthday Bash Friday evening at Crowell Concert Hall that includes a mix of traditional and experimental tributes. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown sponsors Jeffrey Diamond this evening/Wednesday in their Local Author series with his new thriller, “Live to the Network.” Also today/ Wednesday, Richie Jackson presents his memoir, “Gay Like Me,” in conversation with Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein. They sponsor author Deepak Chopra on Thursday at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, who’ll discuss his latest, “The Nature of Reality.” Lisa G Samia is featured on Sunday afternoon with her collection, “The Nameless and the Faceless of the Civil War.” The Light Up Your Mind! program continues through the week, and check the website for Kids’ Event programs, including their new read-aloud Chapters Book Club and Family Story Time.

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom tonight/ Wednesday with Longwave and The Philistines, Jr. They headline Mike Doughty for his Winter Tour 2020 on Thursday, appearing with Baby Men. Bambara and Maxband take the stage on Friday night, and on Saturday they’ve got Carbon Based, Bonsai Trees, Cinema Stare, and Quinn. Chris Redd is the headliner on Sunday. At the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Marc Maron brings his Hey, There’s More Tour to the region on Saturday, appearing with Dean Delray. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you blues, funk, and jazz on Thursday with Jake Shimaburkuro. On Friday, it’s more blues and rock with Los Lobos, and on Saturday you can hear Moondance, the Ultimate Van Morrison Tribute band. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues screenings of this year’s Oscar nominee shorts in the categories of Animation and Live Action, and also continue the Oscar-winning film, “Parasite,” through Thursday. Also continuing is “The Woman Who Loves Giraffes,” about the woman who studied African wildlife before Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues the run of “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” a restoration of this 1949 black comedy about a serial killer aspiring to become a Duke, through Friday. Their Thursday matinée is National Theatre Live’s performance of “Cyrano de Bergerac.” You’re invited their 50 th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday to enjoy free screenings of “Yellow Submarine” and “Alice’s Restaurant,” along with refreshments and a costume contest. From midnight to 1am it's What the Funk with Jagged Little Thrill. Exploring George Clinton’s concept of “the Funk,” as it appears across genres and generations.

At 2am it's the Hour of Slack from Pacifica. Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others

And from 3 to 4am, third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!
At 4am we kick off our daytime public affairs block with the BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR at 5am.
