Friday 2-14-20 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, February 14th . Happy Valentine's Day. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and '70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, Waberi Jordan takes the stage tonight with special guest Shena Verrett. The Aligned With Source workshop happens tomorrow morning, followed by a Teen Open Mic at 3 pm. Enjoy pop and rock with Interrupter Jones tomorrow night. In New Haven, at Café Nine, today's Happy Hour happening right now includes The Tommys plus Buzz Gordo who’ll be performing love songs, and tonight you can catch Joe Jack Talcum, The Mega Yeah, and Malcolm Tent. The Café Nine Saturday Jazz Jam Session is led by Tony DioGuardi and Friends, followed by the late show with The Right Offs and Ditch Boys. The Sunday Buzz matinée brings you Eric Lindell, and they round out the weekend later with a Blues Jam featuring the George Lesiw Band. www.cafenine.com

Also in Hartford, the Arch Street Tavern tonight hosts the BRYAC funk supergroup tonight. There’s Goat Yoga at Dunkin’ Donuts Park tomorrow morning, and there’s a Valentine’s Dinner and Dancing event at the Gershon Fox Ballroom in the evening. The Middletown Arts and Culture Office wants you to know that the Fred Astaire Dance Studios is holding a Valentine’s Day Dance Party and Open House tonight, and there’s a Pasta Class and Wine Tasting tomorrow evening at the Wadsworth Mansion. There’s still time to get tickets to the Artists for World Peace fundraiser Broadway event on Sunday, where you can enjoy dinner and performances by Broadway professionals at The Cutting Room in New York City. At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Lifestyle Medicine series continues tomorrow with Jeff Hush, founder of Food and Movement Therapy. The library is closed on Sunday and Monday for President’s Day. Consult the website calendar for future events geared to all patrons, including help sessions for people who are home-insecure, and both special offerings from the Job and Career Center. At Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts, there’s a Senior Recital tonight at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall, and on Sunday the 4 th Annual Wesleyan FluteFest Concert happens at Crowell Concert Hall at 7 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut.

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its run of Oscar-nominated short films and opens a run of the Oscar-winning “Parasite” and "The Woman Who Loves Giraffes." Details and screening times at  www.realartways.org

Tonight, at Trinity College’s Cinestudio, the college’s Black Student Union invites you to the moonlight movie tonight, “Love & Basketball,” about two neighbors who hope to turn their love into a shot at the pros. You can see perennial classic “Casablanca” tonight and tomorrow, and on Sunday they open “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” a restoration of this 1949 black comedy about a serial killer aspiring to become a Duke. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore is holding movie night tonight, where you can view “Never Let Me Go.” Pre-registration is required, so go to www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford holds a Tea Party in the Morgan Great Hall Saturday along with a screening of “Downton Abbey,” and will screen the movie again on Sunday afternoon. www.hartford.com/events/

Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown.

Right after the Jive until 6pm, it’s Wild Wild Live! with DJ Celiac and DJ Opal. That Wesleyan music scene.

From 6 to 6:30, the Middletown Youth Radio Project with DJ Itsjobro, DJ Juicebox and DJ Stocks'n'socks features the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 6:30-8pm the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T has a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 8-9:30 pm, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll. Travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly, and some new releases.

At 9:30 until 10:30 Loxion Music Mix Show with M-Point presents A showcase of the newest and best of Southern African Electronica.

From 10:30pm-11:30pm, Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee serves up Local Hip Hop. Unsigned.

And then at 11:30pm it’s time for Permanent Collection with Chris Non-toxic.

At 1 until 2am, Rust with Sinbad discusses affairs of the Wesleyan and Middletown community.

From 2-4am, Back Down the Bayou with Bill Boelens takes you to the Banana Plantation in Baton Rouge for an eclectic mix of Louisiana and roots music.

And then at 4 it’s a rebroadcast of the day’s Democracy Now! From Pacifica.
