Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can enjoy Shaking the Tree, a
Gong and Sound Healing on Thursday.
Friday the Buttonwood kicks off their 30th anniversary with their
first-ever 30-hour Performance Marathon and fundraiser. For thirty hours at
three locations Friday and Saturday, you enjoy live performances, refreshments,
a silent auction, art displays, vintage photos and more.
Friday’s performers include: House of Moses, Kate Rushin, Cathy Kreger,
Kristen Graves, Kate Callahan, Lara Herscovitch and Ashley Hamel. Saturday’s
events includes appearances by Buttonwood co-founder, Stephan Alison, Joe
Flood, Laszlo Gardony, Brian O’Rourke, Bob Gotta, Carolyn Halsted, John
BAsinger, Neely Bruce and Kitty Katherine. The events close out with a Gala

At the Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore,
Italian-American heritage is the topic on Thursday with authors Marco
Rafalà and Juliet Grames presenting their new works. On Saturday afternoon
Roberta Isleib speaks with Ang Pompano about his new mystery,” When It’s Time
for Leaving.” Kids’ events continue this week and include story time and
sessions on Spanish, acting, and a visit with Beth Vrabel on Wednesday about

The Godfrey Memorial Library offers genealogy research help sessions on
Wednesday.
Middletown Works hosts a Conversation Circle for single parents at the
Family Wellness Center on Thursday.
The Recreation Division sponsors Friday Night Bingo at the Senior &
Community Center, as well as Downtown Trick or Treat on Saturday, along with
Fall Festival events on the South Green including a petting zoo, games,
vendors, music, and more.
The world jazz collective Heard performs on Saturday at the Buttonwood’s
30th anniversary celebration.
The Greater Middletown Chorale and First Congregational Church of Cheshire
host a free performance of Soirées Musicales by the vocal chorale Alchemy on
Saturday night.
The Nick Di Maria Quartet performs live jazz at Conspiracy on Saturday, and
on Sunday they hold a Royal Tea with the Queens event while collecting

In New Haven, at Café Nine, there’s a Comedy Open Mic tonight/Wednesday
with Dan Rice, and on Thursday they bring you Tommy Sands.
Friday, The Nine’s weekly Happy Hour live music set at 5pm, features
Dittymack. Friday night’s main event
features Dale Watson and His Lonestars, and Roses Wild.
Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Tony DioGuardi and Friends, and later
they bring Rhett Miller and Elaina Kay to the Café stage. The Sunday Buzz
Matinée features Auguste and Alden with Wallace & Sasso, and in the

The State House in New Haven hosts Living Room Night this evening/Wednesday
with games, scary moves, and more.
On Thursday, The State House presents a singer/songwriter showcase with
host Marisol Credle, and on Friday you can catch Lightkeeper, Albino Redwood,
Memory Celle, and more. It’s a Homecoming Show on Saturday at The State House
featuring The Most, appearing with Standby, Nikita, and Elom. Sunday evening,

In Hartford, it's Karaoke Night at The Russell this evening/Wednesday. The
Hartford Fringe Festival opens on Thursday with ten days of theater, music,
comedy and more performed by local and national artists at the Carriage House

Restoratives. The GOAT Brew & Wine Fest happens Saturday afternoon at
Dunkin’ Donuts Park, and there’s a Discover Hartford Scavenger Hunt at the

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday weekly Community
Blues Jam hosted by Ed Bradley, and on Thursday Liviu’s Invitational take the
Black-Eyed Sally’s stage. You can dance the night away on Friday with The
Cartells, and on Saturday they’ve got the Hall High School Jazz Ensembles and a
special guest band from Germany, performing with Grammy-nominated composer Pete

At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble Wednesday is on at 5:00 pm,
and the Veterans Writing Group meets Thursday afternoon. On Thursday evening
the Connecticut Poetry Society presents a workshop, “Poets on Poetry,” with a
focus on the 13th century Persian poet Rumi.
The library will participate in Saturday morning’s Downtown Trick or Treat
in the children’s section, and in the afternoon their “Jazz Up Close:
Composition as Storytelling” series continues featuring drummer/composer Gerald

Infinity Hall Norfolk hosts Karla Bonoff on Thursday and the Yonder
Mountain String Band is in the house on Friday. You can enjoy jazz with Steve
Tyrell on Saturday, and on Sunday and Southern rock with JJ Grey and his Front
Porch Sessions. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you Broken Arrow, a Tribute to
Neil Young on Friday, and on Sunday it’s jazz with the Delfeayo Marsalis
Quintet, the West Hartford Jazz All Stars, and more for the Gifts of Music

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a psych/rock dance party Friday
with Falconeer, Fiction, and Psychotic Reaction. On Saturday you can catch

Manic Presents brings In This Moment to the College Street Music Hall on
Friday, and on Sunday they headline Thievery Corporation. At the Space Ballroom
in Hamden, they bring you Altin Gün on Friday, and Cimorelli takes the stage on
Saturday for a 1 pm matinée show. They round out the weekend at the Space on

Here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,”
and “Aquarela,” a cinematic journey about the raw power of water. Also
continuing is “Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements,” a memoir about a
deaf boy, his grandfather, and Beethoven.
“The Peanut Butter Falcon,” about a young man with Down ’s syndrome with
dreams of being a professional wrestler is also being screened. All run through
Thursday. Future openings include “Midnight Traveler” and “Parasite.” Check the

Through tonight/Wednesday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford
continues their run of “Honeyland,” a documentary about bees. On Thursday they
open “Luce,” a psychological thriller about an adopted all-star high school
athlete with a secret. Sunday’s National Theatre Live matinée film is
Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and they open a run of “Tel Aviv on
Fire,” a comedy about a soap opera that eases Israeli-Palestinian tensions.

And at 3am third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our
noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!
At 4am we kick off our daytime public affairs block with BBC World Report
followed by morning edition from NPR at 5am.
