Monday 10-21-19 Jive



Good evening, it's Monday, October 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday, and on Friday you can hear bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening it’s blues/rock classics with Frankie and The Know It Alls. Eileen Anderson leads a Reiki Share session on Sunday afternoon. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Vinnie Caruna, Tier, and Jared Knapik. The Burning Hell and The Proud Flesh take the stage on Tuesday, and on Wednesday they’ve got Austin Bonk, Mamma’s Boy, and Donnie Alexzander. You can catch Flamin’ Groovies and Dust Hat on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Hatfield, followed by Anthony Da Costa and the David Wax Museum for the late show. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, and the evening show headlines Richard Lloyd and Happy Ending. The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings you Jake Kulak & The Lowdown, appearing with Vicki F, and they finish out the weekend shows with The Meadows Brothers, Noble Dust, and Pat Stone. http://www.cafenine.com/  

The State House in New Haven hosts an Open Mic with Steve Rodgers tonight, featuring Ashley Hamel. Tuesday Table Tennis is on the books with a 5 pm start, and on Wednesday it’s comedy with Rell Battle. Enjoy a genre-bending music mix on Thursday with their F the Format session, and on Friday it’s the Rock Lottery Finals where four groups meet four musical challenges. They headline Nikhil P. Yerawadekar and Low Mentality on Saturday, appearing with the Forest Room, and on Sunday it’s Multiplex 5, their improvised music series, with Joe Morris, Jamie Saft, Brant Beale, and many more. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the Green Street Trio and Steven Riley are featured in their Jazz Mondays session tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Ray Morant, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. It’s blues-based rock and roll on Friday with Mambo Sons, and on Saturday the Ausssie group Harper & The Midwest Kind takes the stage to bring you harmonica and the didgeridoo. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Back in Hartford, the Hartford Fringe Festival continues this week with theater, music, comedy and more performed by local and national artists at the Carriage House Theater. The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight. It’s Karaoke Night at The Russell on Wednesday, and on Thursday you’re invited to Lunch Break with Maddie Jay performing with drummer Eric Derwallis at Parkville Sounds. It’s Off the Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives on Thursday, and on Friday Cedar Hill Cemetery offers a Hallowed History Lantern Tour. The Nick DeMaria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company on Friday. On Saturday, you can enjoy Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours at the Mark Twain House or catch experimental music and more at the Arch Street Tavern with Eazybaked, Sumthin Sumthin, and Vide. Infinity Hall Hartford hosts a Laughs for Kids Stand-Up Comedy Benefit on Tuesday with proceeds going to the Kids of Summer Foundation. On Friday, it’s Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute band. At Infinity Norfolk, Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals bring you pop, R&B, and more on Thursday, and on Friday it’s folk singer/songwriter Sean Rowe. Illusionist and Comedian Andy Gross is in the house on Saturday, and on Sunday, you can catch The Mighty Pines, bringing you jamgrass and roots rock. www.infinityhall.com

Wesleyan’s Special Collections & Archives is presenting a symposium, “Homage to Samuel Beckett” on Thursday at 3 pm to celebrate the recent gift of Beckett letters and books by Dr. Jay Levy ’60 and Sharon Levy. The speakers are Dr. Levy, friend of Beckett; Lois Overbeck, managing editor of The Correspondence of Samuel Beckett; and Wesleyan Assistant Professor of French Michael Meere. Topics to be explored are Beckett as a friend and correspondent, a prolific letter writer, and a literary figure for whom letters were an important mode of expression. It’s free and open to the public.

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the CT Office of the Arts hosts an ADA Workshop on Wednesday morning, Principles and Practice for Arts Administrators, at Nelson Hall in Cheshire. The Godfrey Memorial Library offers a genealogy research help session on Friday. The Wadsworth Mansion holds a 2-day Halloween Bash fundraising event, A Strange Evening with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Friday and Saturday evening. At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble Wednesday is on at 5:00 pm, and on Thursday the Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Council presents a session on current drug trends for parents and child caregivers. They partner with the US Postal Service Saturday morning for Passport Day, and also offer yoga in the Hubbard Room. Paul Rice will speak about medical massage modalities in the afternoon. On Sunday afternoon, pianist Mark Valenti presents works by Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, and more in the Hubbard Room. The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts award-winning novelist Eileen Pollack on Wednesday with her new work, “The Professor of Immortality.” Their monthly Philosophy Night happens on Saturday at 6 pm. Kids’ events continue this week, including a slime party and story time, and they present Brendan Wenzel on Thursday with his nature book, “A Stone Sat Still.” The Well Read Black Girl Book Club holds a meet-up on Sunday afternoon. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings The Districts to the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday, and on Thursday Vacationer and Wavelengths take the Front Room stage. They headline Fit For An Autopsy on Friday, appearing with Lorna Shore, Dyscarnate, and more, and on Saturday you can catch Of Montreal. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Cortége TX, Pinto Graham, and BHR on Wednesday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; “Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements,” a memoir about a deaf boy, his grandfather, and Beethoven; and “Anthropocene: The Human Epoch,” a documentary about human planetary domination. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Fantastic Fungi,” a documentary about the healing power of fungi, with post-film discussions on Friday and Saturday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Tel Aviv on Fire,” a comedy about a soap opera that eases Israeli-Palestinian tensions, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Hustlers,” about New York strippers who turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. There’s a one-time showing of a new, Ultra HD version of “Donnie Darko” Friday night as part of their Moonlight Movies series. Their Sunday matinée offering of the Bolshoi Ballet in Cinemas is “Raymonda,” directed by Alexander Glazunov, and in the evening they open a run of “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.” Full details at http://www.cinestudio.org

The Middletown International Film Festival continues on Tuesday at the Russell Library with a screening of the award-winning Mexican film “Roma,” about domestic strife and political turmoil in the ‘70’s era. There’s a post-film discussion with Professor Maria Ospina. On Wednesday at Russell, The Connecticut Center for Mind-Body Enrichment sponsors a screening of the documentary “Heal,” about how mind-body connections affect human healing. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 1:30-2:30am Prominent Profiles with DJ Elliot takes a look at an historic artist that has had a profound influence on popular culture and current artists.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
