programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio
from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best
in free-form programming.
I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango,
heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything
Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by Ashley Hamel.
There’s Laughter Yoga with Dawn on Tuesday, followed by a Crystal Bowl
Sound Healing with Lou Sorrentino. You can enjoy Shaking the Tree, a Gong Bath
and Sound Healing on Thursday, and on Friday the Buttonwood celebrates its 30th
anniversary with the first-ever 30-hour Performance Marathon and fundraiser.
For thirty hours at three locations, enjoy live performances, refreshments, a

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Weakened
Friends. Tomorrow, you can catch Parkers Tangent, Gardant, and Anthony Corps.
There’s a Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday with Dan Rice, and on Thursday they
bring you Tommy Sands. Friday’s Happy Hour features Dittymack, followed later by
Dale Watson and His Lonestars, and Roses Wild. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is
with Tony Di and Friends, and later they bring Rhett Miller and Elaina Kay to
the Café stage. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Auguste and Alden with Wallace

The State House in New Haven
hosts an Open Mic with Steve Rodgers tonight, featuring Seth Adam. It’s Mixtape
Bingo on Tuesday with lots of digital tracks. They host Living Room Night on Wednesday
with games, scary moves, and more. On Thursday, it’s a singer/songwriter
showcase with host Marisol Credle, and on Friday you can catch Lightkeeper,
Albino Redwood, Memory Celle, and more. It’s a Homecoming Show on Saturday for
The Most, appearing with Standby, Nikita, and Elom, and on Sunday evening The

Back in Hartford, the Hartford
Jazz Orchestra performs at the Arch Street Tavern tonight and there’s a Kizomba
Public Dance Session at Union Station. Cedar Hill Cemetery holds a Highlight
Tour Wednesday morning, and it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell in the evening.
The Hartford Fringe Festival opens on Thursday with ten days of theater, music,
comedy and more performed by local and national artists at the Carriage House
Theater. It’s Off the Record Indie Night on Thursday at Little River
Restoratives. The GOAT Brew & Wine Fest happens Saturday afternoon at
Dunkin’ Donuts Park, and there’s a Discover Hartford Scavenger Hunt at the

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts
Neil Olson on Tuesday in conversation with Brian Wraight to discuss his new mystery
novel, “Before the Devil Fell.” Italian-American heritage is the topic on
Thursday with authors Marco Rafalà and Juliet Grames presenting their new works.
On Saturday afternoon Roberta Isleib speaks with Ang Pompano about his new mystery,”
When It’s Time for Leaving.” Kids’ events continue this week and include story
time and sessions on Spanish, acting, and a visit with Beth Vrabel on Wednesday

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the Mike
Camacho Quintet is featured in their Jazz Mondays session tonight. Michael
Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on
Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Ed Bradley, and on
Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. You can dance the night away on Friday with
The Cartells, and on Saturday they’ve got the Hall High School Jazz Ensembles
and a special guest band from Germany, performing with Grammy-nominated

The Middletown Arts & Culture
Office reminds you that Tapestry Weaving and Printing on Textiles and Paper
workshops continue at Wesleyan Potters this week. The Johan Center for Earth
and Art co-host a “Replace Our Trees” program Tuesday at Common Council
Chambers on Tuesday evening. The Godfrey Memorial Library offers genealogy
research help sessions on Wednesday. Middletown Works hosts a Conversation
Circle for single parents at the Family Wellness Center on Thursday. The
Recreation Division sponsors Friday Night Bingo at the Senior & Community
Center, as well as Downtown Trick or Treat on Saturday, along with Fall
Festival events on the South Green including a petting zoo, games, vendors,
music, and more. The world jazz collective Heard performs on Saturday at the
Buttonwood’s 30th anniversary celebration. The GM Chorale and First
Congregational Church of Cheshire host a free performance of Soirées Musicales
by the vocal chorale Alchemy on Saturday night. The Nick Di Maria Quartet
performs live jazz at Conspiracy on Saturday, and on Sunday they hold a Royal
Tea with the Queens event while collecting donations for Middletown food banks.

Wesleyan Center for the Arts
hosts MacArthur Fellow Cameron Rowland for an Artist Talk at the Ring Arts Hall
on Tuesday, and there’s a performance of “Inaction” at the Zilkha Gallery. Both

At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble
Wednesday is on at 5:00 pm, and the Veterans Writing Group meets Thursday
afternoon. On Thursday evening the Connecticut Poetry Society presents a
workshop, “Poets on Poetry,” with a focus on the 13th century
Persian poet Rumi. The library will participate in Saturday morning’s Downtown
Trick or Treat in the children’s section, and in the afternoon their Jazz Up
Close: Composition as Storytelling series continues featuring drummer/composer

his Front Porch Sessions. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you Broken Arrow, a

Marsalis Quintet, the West Hartford Jazz All Stars, and more for the Gifts of

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a

Manic Presents brings In This
Moment to the College Street Music Hall on Friday, and on Sunday they headline
Thievery Corporation. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, they bring you Altin Gün
on Friday, and Cimorelli takes the stage on Saturday for a 1 pm matinée show.

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track
in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt:
The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist, and
“Aquarela,” a cinematic journey about the raw power of water. Also continuing is
“Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements,” a memoir about a deaf boy, his
grandfather, and Beethoven, and “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” about a young man
with Down’s Syndrome with dreams of being a professional wrestler. All run
through Thursday. Future openings include “Midnight Traveler” and “Parasite.” Check

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues
the run of “Honeyland,” a documentary about bees, through Wednesday. On
Thursday they open “Luce,” a psychological thriller about an adopted all-star
high school athlete with a secret. Sunday’s National Theatre Live matinée film
is Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and they open a run of “Tel Aviv
on Fire,” a comedy about a soap opera that eases Israeli-Palestinian tensions. Full

The Middletown International Film
Festival continues on Tuesday at Chapman Hall on the Middlesex Community
College campus with a screening of “I Am Not a Witch,” a Zambian film about a

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with
Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.
From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle
chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against
our current system and to create something newer, freer and more liberating for
us all.
From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson
offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with
occasional live interviews.
At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in
the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the
world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and
veteran artists.
From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show
brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV
trivia, and lot of fun.
The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits
of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU

At 12:30 until 1:30 am it’s Influenza
with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and
influences of contemporary artists to
expose how they found their direction.
From 1:30-2:30am The Beatles: A Week in
the Life with DJ McKenzie tells the story of The Beatles, their contemporaries,
and the artists and songs that inspired them, a week at a time.
From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides
a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking: directors,
cinematographers, composers, writers, and animators from across the globe.
From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of
the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.
Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is
the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each
weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
