Monday 10-28-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, October 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I’ll be on this Sunday, and I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by Jacob Wiseman. Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday night, and on Saturday the Aligned With Source workshop happens at 10:30 am. Enjoy acoustic instrumentals and more in the evening with On The Trail Bluegrass. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Katie Kim, and on Tuesday it’s a Tiki Halloween party with Los Straitjackets and The Zambonis. There’s another Words & Music session on Wednesday, and on Thursday they headline Shake ‘n’ Vibrate. Friday’s Happy Hour features Joyce the Voice, followed by the late show with Kinky Friedman and The Merry Kinkster Tour. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Michael Coppola, and in the evening, you can catch Shame Penguin and Cardboard Dream House. The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings you Protex, The Live Ones, and Lefty and the Chief, and they finish out the weekend with The Schizophonics and Killer Kin. http://www.cafenine.com/

The State House in New Haven hosts an Open Mic with Steve Rodgers tonight, featuring Max Johns. Enjoy Table Tennis on Tuesday at 5 pm, and on Thursday you can dance away a goth and industrial Halloween with DJ’s Mordecai, R.I.C.H.A.R.D., and F. Esther. You can Party Out of Bounds on Friday at their Brit-Pop tribute night, and on Saturday it’s Calle Allenda, a puppet theatre production inspired by Frida Kahlo’s diary. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the Leland Baker Trio is featured in their Jazz Mondays session tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Tim McDonald, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. It’s blues, swing, and rock and roll on Friday with Carl Ricci and 706 Union Avenue, and on Saturday you can catch singer/songwriter Latanya Farrell and her band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight, and there’s a Kizomba Public Dance Session at Union Station. It’s Karaoke Night at The Russell on Wednesday, and on Thursday you can check out a Murder Mystery Tour at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company. It’s also Off the Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives. The Hartford Fringe Festival concludes on Friday at the Carriage House Theater with performances by local and national artists, and Sensual Salsa Saturdays takes place at the Red Rock Tavern on Saturday. At the Russell Library in Middletown, Mathew Duman discusses gargoyles and grotesques from ten American campuses tonight at 6 pm. Harriet Grayson presents a “How To” on grants for nonprofits on Tuesday morning, and in the evening the Association of American University Women holds an open meeting. There’s an Open House Employment Information session on the 2020 census Wednesday at 4 pm, followed by Scrabble. The offsite First Fridays Book Discussion meets to discuss Stephen King’s “Elevation” at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga at 7 pm. They sponsor a Health Workshop Saturday morning on using gemstone crystals in a guided meditation, and on Sunday afternoon Sarada Nori will perform Indian Classical Dance at 2 pm. Toad’s Place presents The Monster Mash on Tuesday in Lilly’s Pad, with Magnets for Maniacs, Arcadia Forsaken, The Loners Club, and more. It’s a Halloween Backlight Glow Party on Thursday with action on two stages by Lucas Ketchian, Maxam, Rvm & Koke, and more. On Friday they headline Tribal Seeds, appearing with New Kingston and Tropidelic, and on Sunday Atreyu celebrates their 20th Anniversary Tour, appearing with Whitechapel, He is Legend, and more. www.toadsplace.com

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts an Open Mic Tuesday evening, and on Wednesday there’s a Teen NanoWriMo Kick-off event with Rebecca Behrens, author of “The Disaster Days.” Roxanne Coady holds a conversation with Beck Dorey-Stein on Friday about her new memoir, “From the Corner of the Oval.” Kids’ events continue this week, including Story Time. Free events this week sponsored by Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts start on Tuesday with a graduate recital by Max Gibson in Memorial Chapel. A guided tour of Brendan Fernandes’ exhibition, “Inaction,” followed by dance performances by the artist and Charles Gowin, happen Saturday at the Zilkha Art Gallery. Cellist and singer/songwriter Melanie Hsu performs “a prayer for broken glass” Sunday at The Russell House. Manic Presents brings Katie Toupin and Grayson Foster to Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday, and on Friday Hot Rod Circuit and their Sorry About Tomorrow Anniversary Show is in town, appearing with Anxious, The Split Coils, and Honch. White Reaper, The Nude Party, and Wombo will be at the Space on Sunday. They headline Gregory Alan Isakov at the College Street Music Hall on Thursday, appearing with Luke Sital-Singh. Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong, and Goose, will be at College Street on Saturday. You can catch Kishi Bashi and Cicada Rhythm at the Wall street Theater in Norwalk on Friday, and on Sunday they headline The Infamous Stringdusters at Wall Street. www.manicpresents.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces an Idea Swap Wednesday at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA, where non-profits and touring artists meet to network and share ideas for touring projects. Kids can trick or treat at City Hall on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Family Craft Night at the Senior and Community Center. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you The Halloween Horror Picture Show on Thursday with West End Blend and Bella’s Bartok. The World Affairs Council of CT brings you former president of Mexico Vincente Fox on Friday for an intimate conversation. On Saturday, it’s classic rock ‘n’ roll with Get the Led Out, and on Sunday, they’ve got jazz and R & B with Ruben Sings Luther. At Infinity Norfolk, singer/songwriter Nick Lowe brings you solo acoustic pop and rock on Friday, and it’s more of the same on Saturday with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist, and “Fantastic Fungi,” a documentary about the healing power of fungi, along with “Where’s My Roy Cohn,” a documentary about the political power broker who influenced Trump, through Thursday. Future openings include “Midnight Traveler” and “Parasite.” www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,”  through Thursday, and are also screening “Where’s My Roy Cohn” through the weekend. Their Exhibition On Screen series continues with the Sunday matinée of “Leonardo: The Works,” about da Vinci’s paintings and drawings, and they open a run of “Another Day of Life” Sunday evening, a film about the anarchy of warfare based on a Polish journalist’s memoir of Angola. http://www.cinestudio.org

The Middletown International Film Festival continues on Tuesday at the Russell Library with a screening of “Summer,” a Spanish film about a six-year-old orphan reacting to her new home in the mountains. There’s a post-film discussion with Professor Olga Sendra Ferrer. www.russelllibrary.org

Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against our current system and to create something newer, freer and more liberating for us all.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 1:30 am it’s Influenza with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists  to expose how they found their direction.

From 1:30-2:30am The Beatles: A Week in the Life with DJ McKenzie tells the story of The Beatles, their contemporaries, and the artists and songs that inspired them, a week at a time.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking: directors, cinematographers, composers, writers, and animators from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
