Tuesday 10-22-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, October 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight, The Burning Hell and The Proud Flesh take the stage. Wednesday, Café  nine presents Austin Bonk, Mamma’s Boy, and Donnie Alexzander. You can catch the legendary Flamin’ Groovies along with Dust Hat on Thursday at The Nine. Friday Café nine’s weekly live Happy Hour music showcase features Hatfield. Friday night, Anthony Da Costa and David Wax Museum take the stage. Café Nine’s Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band and the Saturday night main event brings you Richard Lloyd and Happy Ending. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Jake Kulak & The Lowdown, appearing with Vicki F. The nine finished out the weekend with The Meadows Brothers, Noble Dust, and Pat Stone sharing a bill Sunday eve. http://www.cafenine.com/  
At The State House in New Haven, Tuesday Table Tennis is on the books with a 5 pm start, and on Wednesday, The Statehouse presents comedy with Rell Battle. The Statehouse offers a genre-bending music mix on Thursday with their “F the Format” session, and on Friday it’s the Rock Lottery Finals where four groups meet four musical challenges. The Statehouse headlines Nikhil P. Yerawadekar and Low Mentality on Saturday, appearing with the Forest Room.  Sunday Multiplex 5, the statehouse improvised music series, features Joe Morris, Jamie Saft, Brant Beale, and many more. www.statehousepresents.com
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday nights. Wednesday Sally’s weekly Community Blues Jam is hosted by Ray Morant, and on Thursday Liviu’s Invitational. You can catch blues-based rock and roll on Friday with Mambo Sons, and on Saturday the Aussie group Harper & The Midwest Kind takes the stage to bring you harmonica and the didgeridoo. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/
Infinity Hall Hartford hosts a Laughs for Kids Stand-Up Comedy Benefit this (Tue) eve with proceeds benefitting the Kids of Summer Foundation. On Friday, it’s Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute band. At Infinity Norfolk, Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals bring you pop, R&B, and more on Thursday, and on Friday they’ve got folk singer/songwriter Sean Rowe. Illusionist and Comedian Andy Gross is in the house on Saturday, and on Sunday, you can catch The Mighty Pines, a jam band playing bluegrass and roots rock. www.infinityhall.com

The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown.  Friday the Buttonwood Tree offer a night of bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and Saturday evening Frankie and The Know It Alls play blues/rock classics. Wesleyan’s Special Collections & Archives is presenting a symposium, “Homage to Samuel Beckett” on Thursday at 3 pm to celebrate the recent gift of Beckett letters and books by Dr. Jay Levy ’60 and Sharon Levy. It’s free and open to the public.

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the CT Office of the Arts hosts an ADA Workshop on Wednesday morning, Principles and Practice for Arts Administrators, at Nelson Hall in Cheshire. The Godfrey Memorial Library offers a genealogy research help session on Friday. The Wadsworth Mansion holds a 2-day Halloween Bash fundraising event, A Strange Evening with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Friday and Saturday evening. Tomorrow, Scrabble Wednesday is on for 5:00 pm at the Russell Library in Middletown.  Thursday the Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Council presents a session on current drug trends for parents and child caregivers at The Library.  They partner with the US Postal Service Saturday morning for Passport Day, and also offer yoga in the Hubbard Room. Paul Rice will speak about medical massage modalities in the afternoon at Russell Library. On Sunday afternoon, pianist Mark Valenti presents works by Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, and more in the Hubbard Room. www.russelllibrary.org

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts award-winning novelist Eileen Pollack on Wednesday with her new work, “The Professor of Immortality.” Their monthly Philosophy Night happens on Saturday at 6 pm. Kids’ events continue this week, including a slime party and story time, and they present Brendan Wenzel on Thursday with his nature book, “A Stone Sat Still.” The Well Read Black Girl Book Club holds a meet-up on Sunday afternoon. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings The Districts to the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday, and on Thursday Vacationer and Wavelengths take the Front Room stage. They headline Fit For An Autopsy on Friday, appearing with Lorna Shore, Dyscarnate, and more, and on Saturday you can catch Of Montreal. They bring Bob Saget to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Thursday, and on Friday Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot are in the house. www.manicpresents.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Cortége TX, Pinto Graham, and BHR on Wednesday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; “Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements,” a memoir about a deaf boy, his grandfather, and Beethoven; and “Anthropocene: The Human Epoch,” a documentary about human planetary domination. On Friday they open “Fantastic Fungi,” a documentary about the healing power of fungi, with post-film discussions on Friday and Saturday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Tel Aviv on Fire,” a comedy about a soap opera that eases Israeli-Palestinian tensions, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Hustlers,” about New York strippers who turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. There’s a one-time showing of a new, Ultra HD version of “Donnie Darko” Friday night as part of their Moonlight Movies series. Their Sunday matinée offering Bolshoi Ballet in Cinemas’  “Raymonda,” directed by Alexander Glazunov, and in the evening they open a run of “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.” Full details at http://www.cinestudio.org

The Middletown International Film Festival continues this eve (Tuesday) at the Russell Library with a screening of the award-winning Mexican film “Roma,” about domestic strife and political turmoil in the ‘70’s era. There’s a post-film discussion with Professor Maria Ospina. On Wednesday at Russell, The Connecticut Center for Mind-Body Enrichment sponsors a screening of the documentary “Heal,” about how mind-body connections affect human healing. The Spooky Popcorn series in Hartford continues at Constitution Plaza with a screening of “The Lost Boys” on Tuesday, “Poltergeist” on Wednesday, “The Ring” on Thursday, and “Pet Sematary” on Friday. www.hartford.com/events/

from 2-3am Louisiana Barn Dance brings us an hour of rootin tooting Cajun and roots country sounds from Louisiana.

at 3am third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!

At 4am we kick of four daytime public affairs block with BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR.
