Tuesday 8-28-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, August 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

At the Russell Library in Middletown, their Classic Mystery Book discussion group meets this (tues) evening to explore “The Daughter of Time.”  Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

Here in Middletown, tonight, The Buttonwood Tree offers Gentle Yoga with Theresa. On Friday at The Buttonwood, you can enjoy jazz fused with blues, gospel, and soul performed by Deborah Davis and a Few Good Men. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and Saturday evening, B’s Bees, a high energy jazz group, takes the stage.

In New Haven, tonight at Café Nine, there’s a Back to School Fundraiser for Family Centered Services with Daphne Lee Martin, Linda Draper, and more. Wednesday’s headliner at Café Nine is Wayne Hancock, appearing with Nathaniel Hintz. The David Mayfield Parade takes to  the stage on Thursday at The Nine.  Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, and Friday night The Plimsouls and Dust Hat perform at Café Nine. On Saturday night, New Caracas and the Matt Knoegel Trio share a bill. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday nights. The Black-Eyed Sally’s Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday and on Thursdays at Sally’s it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. Friday, singer/songwriter Aaron Norcross Jr takes the Black-Eyed Sally’s stage and you can catch some Chicago blues on Saturday with Rockin’ Johnny Burgin.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  

There’s another installation of the Arch St Tavern’s Booyah Free Funk Wednesday event this week and you can catch funk rock fusion on Friday at 8:30 at Arch Street with a performance by Zillawatt who shares the bill with Lush Hone and Quantum Relic. Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford. 

Hartford’s Audio Feed Music Series continues at Constitution Plaza Wednesday at noon with a performance by Jason Ingriselli.

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series in Hartford continues Thursday with a performance by Brian Dolzani. 

The Connecticut Old State House in Hartford continues its Summer Concert Series on Friday at noon with a performance by the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble.

The Pratt Street Patio in Hartford brings you blues and rock on Friday at 5 pm with a performance by Jake Kulak. 

The Nick Di Maria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company in Hartford Friday at 7 pm.


The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford invites you to their Salons at Lunch series Wednesday at noon. Enjoy facilitated conversations on social justice issues. www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org

The Hartford Public Library continues their River Reads event on Wednesday at noon at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza with a reading from “As Brave As You” by Jason Reynolds. www.hplct.org

RJ Julia Booksellers and The Mark Twain House present the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Jacqueline Woodson, at the Mark Twain House in Hartford Wednesday at 7 pm. She’ll present her new book, “Harbor Me.” Details at www.marktwainhouse.org

Wallingford’s Cherry Street Station holds their CT Punkfest 2018 this weekend starting on Friday with Savage world, Videodome, So Long Liberty, and much more. The Connecticut Historical Society holds Free First Saturday this week starting at 10 am. Expore their ongoing WWI exhibit or bring the kids for an interactive session about factory work for the war movement.www.chs.org


It’s Agricultural fair season again in Connecticut and the 107th Haddam Neck Fair happens this Friday through Monday. Offering concessions, a carnival midway with rides and games, agricultural competitions and displays, truck and tractor pulls, 4x4 demos and a ton of live music. Friday night, local rockers Gatekeepers’ Band and Rock Landing take the stage. Saturday’s lineup includes Goodnight Blue Moon, Ninth Wave, Someone You Can XRay, and Tim Palmieri and Friends. On Sunday they’ve got Frank Critelli and Friends, Belle of the Fall, 1974, and concludes with Shakedown, playing the music of the Grateful Dead. www.haddamneckfair.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, and “The Cakemaker,” about a young German baker’s relationship with an Israeli businessman. Also continuing is “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda,” a documentary about this iconic Japanese film composer, and “Mountain,” a cinematic montage of the man-mountain relationship. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Memoir of War,” a French WWII drama of love and loss, and “John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection,” a deep exploration of the notorious tennis star and his craft. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a film exploring the legacy of Fred Rogers, through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday they’re screening “First Reformed,” about an upstate New York minister dealing with a crisis of faith. On Sunday they open a run of the restored 1982 cult classic documentary, “The Atomic Café.” Check the website for all offerings and times.

and from 1-3am Up Front Soul features 2 hrs of Funk, soul, and jazz, with sprinklings of R&B, gospel, and hip-hop.

from 3-4am its Maximum Rock and Roll Radio.
