Friday 8-31-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, August 31st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this Labor day weekend:

In New Haven, Café Nine Friday’s Happy Hour kicks off at 5pm and features Laura Dowding, and later tonight, The Plimsouls and Dust Hat perform at Café Nine. On Saturday night, New Caracas and the Matt Knoegel Trio share a bill. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Here in Middletown, tonight/Friday at the Buttonwood Tree, you can enjoy jazz fused with blues, gospel, and soul performed by Deborah Davis and a Few Good Men. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and Saturday evening, B’s Bees, a high energy jazz group, takes the stage.  www.buttonwood.org


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, singer/songwriter Aaron Norcross Jr takes the Black-Eyed Sally’s stage and you can catch some Chicago blues on Saturday with Rockin’ Johnny Burgin.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  

At Arch St Tavern’s tonight at 8:30you can catch Zillawatt who shares the bill with Lush Hone and Quantum Relic. On Saturday, at Arch St, they’ve got Bass Test featuring Levitation Jones & G-Space. https://www.archstreettavern.com


The Pratt Street Patio in Hartford brings you blues and rock on tonight/Friday at 5 pm with a performance by Jake Kulak. 

The Nick Di Maria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company in Hartford tonight/Friday at 7 pm.


At Toad’s Place in New Haven There’s a Blacklight Glow Party tonight on Sunday they headline Lil Baby and the Harder Than Ever Tour, along with YK Osiris, City Girls, and more. www.toadsplace.com

Wallingford’s Cherry Street Station holds their CT Punkfest 2018 this weekend starting on this evening with Savage world, Videodome, So Long Liberty, and much more. Veterans and active military are invited to a Rowing & Kayaking session Saturday at 9:30 am at the Community Boathouse in Riverside Park in Hartford. www.riverfront.org

The Connecticut Historical Society holds Free First Saturday this week starting at 10 am. Explore their ongoing WWI exhibit or bring the kids for an interactive session about factory work for the war movement.www.chs.org


It’s Agricultural fair season again in Connecticut and the 107th Haddam Neck Fair opens today running through Monday. Offering concessions, a carnival midway with rides and games, agricultural competitions and displays, truck and tractor pulls, 4x4 demos and a ton of live music. Friday night, local rockers Gatekeepers’ Band and Rock Landing take the stage. Saturday’s lineup includes Goodnight Blue Moon, Ninth Wave, Someone You Can XRay, and Tim Palmieri and Friends. On Sunday they’ve got Frank Critelli and Friends, Belle of the Fall, 1974, and concludes with Shakedown, playing the music of the Grateful Dead. www.haddamneckfair.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, and “The Cakemaker,” about a young German baker’s relationship with an Israeli businessman. Tonight Real Art Ways opens a run of “Memoir of War,” a French WWII drama of love and loss, and “John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection,” a deep exploration of the notorious tennis star and his craft. This weekend “Trinity College’s Cinestudio screens First Reformed,” about an upstate New York minister dealing with a crisis of faith. Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who offers a mix of big band, jumping jazz, and rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school soul with a touch of Latin and African music plus health and wellness tips!


From 8:30-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yowza with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

From 12:30 to 3am stay tuned for Overdrive with Mixmaster Clarence and The Real Shantay for a high energy mix of Christian gospel, hop hop, pop music.




At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick of our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
