friday 8-17-18 jive


Good evening, it's Friday August 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now, here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts the Cindy Lee Berryhill Trio on Saturday with material from their new collection. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon at The Buttonwood. On Saturday evening you can catch jazz guitarist/songwriter Sean Clapis. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at Café Nine Friday’s Happy Hour features Jenny Parrott, and in the evening Manic Presents brings you hardcore O.G. rockers, Agent Orange, performing with Fea, and Easy Killer. Saturday Café Nine’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the Saturday night late show features Magic Dick & Shun Ng, with the Bouchard Brothers opening. The Café Nine Sunday Buzz Matinee features La Tunda, The Natch, and The Lamb Bombs, and they round out the weekend Sunday night with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight  Enjoy funky blues and soul with Ray Morant’s Soul Tsunami. On Saturday, Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans takes the stage. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  

The Russell Library Girls Who Code program sponsors a Robotics Demonstration Saturday morning by the Mercy Tech Tigers, and there’s Yoga in the Courtyard too. Next Monday’s noontime Book Talk with a Walk will discuss “Tuesdays with Morrie,” and the Eat Right When Money is Tight nutrition series continues at 1 pm with Label Reading. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. The library sponsors the Summer Meal Service for kids Mon through Fri at 1 pm. www.russelllibrary.org

The Connecticut Historical Society offers a guided tour of their current exhibit, Facing War: Connecticut in World War I, Saturday at 2 pm. www.chs.org

The Riverfront Dragon Boat & Asian Festival happens at Mortenson Riverfront Plaza Saturday at 8 am. Here, you can enjoy boat races, music, food and more to celebrate the Asian heritage. Now, here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, and “The Cakemaker,” about a young German baker’s relationship with an Israeli businessman. Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who offers a mix of big band, jumping jazz, and rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school souls with a touch of Latin and African music plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and RNB spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yowza with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

From 12:30 to 3am stay tuned for Overdrive with Mixmaster Clarence and The Real Shantay for a high energy mix of christian gospel, hop hop, pop music.


At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick of our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.

Once again, our sincere thanks to those who helped bring our spring pledge drive to a successful close. thanks also for your patience over the past week while our FM broadcast was down after our antenna was struck by lightning. We are back on air on a temporary antenna while we work to repair our regular antenna ASAP.
