Monday 9-30-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, September 30th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I’ll be on this Sunday, and I hope you'll tune in.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds their Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Kyla. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and Bob Gotta hosts his monthly Acoustic Open Mic on Thursday. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Saturday evening, and the Aligned with Source Workshop for Self-Awareness happens Saturday morning. In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Tunic tonight. Tomorrow, it’s Oscar Goldman, Mr. P Chill, Cleen, and more. They bring you Dwight & Nicole on Wednesday, and on Thursday you can catch Trey Tuck. Friday’s Happy Hour features Buzz Gordo, followed later by Ideat Village Rock Lottery Day 1. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Michael Coppola, and they bring back the Ideat Village Rock Lottery in the evening for Day 2. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Wild Ponies, and their Blues Jam with the George Lesiw Band rounds out the weekend. http://www.cafenine.com/  

The State House in New Haven hosts an Open Mic with Steve Rodgers tonight, featuring Brook Dougan. On Sunday, they’ve got the Rel Carter Culture Tour, an artist showcase and workshop. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, their Jazz Mondays session features Jeremy Galloway, Sarah Hanahan, Mike Carabello, and Nat Reeves tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Tommy Whalen, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The Claudettes take Sally’s stage Friday night with piano blues, rockabilly, punk and more. On Saturday, it’s rock and blues with singer/songwriter Paul Nelson and his Band. Back in Hartford, the Hartford Jazz Orchestra performs at the Arch Street Tavern tonight. Elizabeth Park hosts a free Rose Garden Tour Wednesday morning, and it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell in the evening. Little River Restoratives holds an Off the Record Indie Night on Thursday. You can join a Historic Tour of Bushnell Park Saturday morning at 10 am, or take the “When Disaster Strikes” tour at Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Connecticut Historical Society holds a Fall harvest event for kids Saturday as part of their Free First Saturday program. RealArtWays holds an inaugural Connecticut Literary Festival Saturday with panels, readings, food trucks and a book fair, and you’re also invited to Colt Park to celebrate Night Fall, an outdoor performance celebrating seasonal change with art, music, dance, puppets and more. Catch sci-fi fusion with Consider the Source, performing at the Arch Street Tavern Saturday night. Christ Church Cathedral hosts a Centennial Cole event Sunday at 3 pm, celebrating 100 years of Nat King Cole with Orice Jenkins, the Cuatro Puntos String Quartet, and the Music Moves Hartford Street Choir. At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Mystery! Group meets tonight to discuss “One for the Money.”  The Racial Justice Book Group meets Tuesday night to talk about “Washington Black.” They host a workshop by Michelle Pellin Wednesday afternoon on Coping with Sudden Loss, followed by Scrabble at 5 pm; at 6 pm there’s a presentation providing information on Medicare Open Enrollment. You can learn about Top IRA Planning Mistakes at a presentation Thursday evening, and on Friday there’s an offsite First Fridays Book Discussion at RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga on Pam Jenoff’s “The Orphan’s Tale.” Marcia Witter presents a Health Workshop Saturday morning on “Lack of Sleep,” and town School Health Supervisor Mary Emerling holds training on emergencies at 1 pm, “Until Help Arrives.” Consult the website calendar for more events geared to patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom tomorrow with Bay Faction, and they bring Luna to the Space on Thursday. On Friday you can join Mates of State to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. Infinity Hall Norfolk brings you blues and more with Jimmie Vaughan on Wednesday. On Thursday, enjoy R&B and more with the Robert Cray Band, and on Friday indie singer/songwriter Greg Laswell takes the stage with his folk/rock offerings. Sunday’s headliner is Davy Knowles with blues guitar. You can enjoy the jazz of six-time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon on Friday at Infinity Hartford. www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore holds a WESteen Readers meeting Wednesday night where teens can enjoy refreshments and talk about books. On Thursday they host NPR journalist Aarti Nemdev Shahani with her memoir, “Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares.” Kids’ events continue this week and include story time and sessions on DNA and the human brain; check the website for details.  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Technical Theater & Design class and Hip-Hop dance class for teens continue this week at Oddfellows Playhouse, and the Tapestry Weaving Workshop continues at Wesleyan Potters.  It’s Off The Record Indie Night Friday at Conspiracy, and on Saturday morning The Godfrey Memorial Library provides a Genealogy Research Help session. Middletown’s Art Walk begins on Saturday with a Climate Action showcase at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op. The Recreation Division holds a Breakfast Bingo on Saturday, and at noon there’s a Pumpkin Fest at Long Lane Farm, hosted by Wesleyan’s College of the Environment, where you can enjoy live music, farm tours, crafts, and more. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors an Opening Reception Wednesday at the Zilkha Gallery for “Inaction,” a sculptural and performance-based installation by Brendan Fernandes, followed by a dance performance. There are guided tours Saturday at 1 pm. Wesleyan Composers will hold a concert at World Music Hall at 9 pm. Choreographer Netta Yerushlamy holds a Master Class movement workshop Saturday at 11 am on Deconstructing Dance History. Jazz vocalist Giacomo Gates performs at the Russell House on Sunday at 3 pm. These events are free and open to the public. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts an Evening with Tail Light Rebellion on Thursday. On Friday, they bring you LHB, Inverter, Texas Death Match, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist, and “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” a comedic drama about a New York woman trying to improve her life. Both run through Thursday. Upcoming openings include “Downton Abbey,” “Midnight Traveler, and “Monos.” Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Aquaréla,” a celebration of the beauty and power of water, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Maiden,” a documentary of an all-female crew competing in the Whitbread Round the World sailing race.  Sunday’s opening is the late Robert Altman’s “Nashville,” a restored version of this 1975 story blending music, politics, cultural satire, and more, with an award-winning ensemble cast. The Middletown International Film Festival opens this week on Tuesday at the Russell Library with a screening of “Loveless,” a Russian movie about the impact of a couple’s divorce on their adolescent son. www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against our current system and to create something newer, freer and more liberating for us all.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

(1, 3, 5) At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

 (1, 3, 5) From 1:30-2:30am Prominent Profiles with DJ Elliot takes a look at a different historic artist each week that has had a profound and lasting influence on popular culture and current artists of today.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking: directors, cinematographers, composers, writers, and animators from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
