Monday 9-2-19 Jive



Good evening, it's Monday, September 2nd. Happy Labor Day! I hope you had a hot dog or veggie dog or whatever your preference is. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree has Laughter Yoga with Mylene tomorrow at 7 pm. On Thursday at 7, they have Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. The Story City Troupe is on stage Friday at 8. On Saturday at 8, BadSlax Jazz brings a sound that's always funky, swinging, or somewhere in between. The marine mammal art show of Don Sineti continues through the month. In New Haven, at Café Nine tomorrow, they have Media Jeweler, Fleurs, and Them Airs. On Wednesday, Sarah Potenza, Lee-Ann Lovelace, and George Lesiw take the stage. On Thursday, they have Brian Dolzani and the Seth Adam Band. Friday’s happy hour features Nicholas "Flats" Flatley, and Friday night, there’s a fundraiser for Lou Cox of Channel 1 featuring The Vultures, DJ LOKASH, and The Rastamones. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and in the evening they bring you Fate, Thabisa, and Streetlight Shakers. The Sunday Matinée has Happy Ending, daniprobably, and Dan Greene (of Mountain Movers), and they finish out the weekend with a Classic Cafe 9 Blues Jam with the Tom Crivellone Band. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on tomorrow. On Wednesday, it’s the Community Blues Jam with Tommy Whalen. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday, and on Friday, they present the Sarah Ashleigh Band. The Russell Library in Middletown has a meeting of the Racial Justice Book Group tomorrow at 6. Scrabble Wednesday meets at 5. On Thursday at 5:30 there’s QPR/Narcan training. Swap Your Stuff: Accessories Style happens at the end of the week with dropoff on Friday starting at 1 and browsing starting at 10 am. The First Fridays book discussion is at 7. Saturday has Eliminate the Sugar Craving at 9:30 and a Climate Action Art event with Chispa.org in the afternoon. The State House in New Haven presents the third New Haven edition of Bat Soup, an evening of comedy hijinx from Young Southpaw and crew featuring Dave Hill tomorrow at 7 pm. On Wednesday at 8:30 it’s EYEHATEGOD, Come to Grief, Churchburn, and Intercourse. On Thursday, Anthony Green with Anays takes the stage at 8, and on Friday they have Field Day, The Redactions, and Kyle Trocolla and the Strangers. Up in Hartford, tomorrow at 6 is Real Art Ways’ Real Board Games & Chess Night, their free game night on the first Tuesday of every month. Wednesday night, it’s Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday at the Arch Street Tavern. Thursday's lunchtime music series features Orice Jenkins at Pratt Street. There's a tour of the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch on Thursday at noon. On Friday, the Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open from 4 to 8. On Saturday from 10 to noon, the Cedar Hill Cemetery holds a mystery scavenger hunt. The Hartbeat Music Festival, a free, day-long celebration of local and regional music, is Saturday at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Guitar Under the Stars with Daniel Salazar and his ensemble of international musicians and symphony players is Saturday night in Bushnell Park. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that the Middletown Symphonic Band will be performing at Harbor Park tomorrow at 6. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Mike Wallace Is Here,” offering an unflinching look at the legendary reporter. Also playing is “Honeyland,” about the tensions between a Macedonian beekeeper and an itinerant family, and "David Crosby: Remember My Name,” about the legendary musician perhaps best known as a member of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Return of Martin Guere,” about a medieval villager who may or may not be who he says he is, through Wednesday. They open “Los Reyes,” about teens and dogs in a Chilean skateboarding park on Thursday. On Friday, they have an added late showing of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” On Sunday they open “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” about a man who attempts to reclaim his childhood home, a Victorian house in the Fillmore District. At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
