Monday 9-23-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, September 23rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I’ll be on this Sunday and hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds their Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Jacob Wiseman. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday evening, and you can hear the Ebin-Rose Trio and Local Honey perform on Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop for Self-Awareness happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Watercolors Class for Youth and Teens in the afternoon. In the evening, you can enjoy acoustic American folk-rock and pop by The Kennedys. There’s a Reiki Level 1 class on Sunday, and you’re invited you to view their September exhibit, The Marine Mammal Art of Don Sineti. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Nobide, Polluter, and The Forest Room. On Tuesday you can catch Phat A$stonaut, Cordoba, and Donnie Alexzander. It’s another session of Words & Music on Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Jason D. Williams and the Nathaniel Hintz Trio. Friday’s Happy Hour features Eric Lapenna, followed by the evening show with Richard Barone and Glenn Mercer, appearing with Dan Greene. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show headlines Akello Jackie & Knobe Band, performing with the Southwind Social Club. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features the Balkun Brothers, and they round out the weekend Jesse Dayton, Mike Stinson, and the Nathaniel Hintz Trio for the evening show. http://www.cafenine.com/  

The State House in New Haven brings you psych rock tonight with Brant Bjork, Ecstatic Vision, and Pinto Graham. They host a Trivia Game Night on Tuesday, and on Thursday it’s indie rock with Vundabar, And The Kids, Indigo De Souza, and Sean Henry. It’s a Local Indie Showcase Night on Friday with Jared Knapik, Jenny Geniuss, and Two Headed Girl, and on Saturday you can catch Home Body, Bitchin Bajas, and Landing. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, their Jazz Mondays session features the Leela Cyr Quartet. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Tim McDonald, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. You can catch trombone with a conga beat on Friday with Trombeatz: A Caribbean Thing, and it’s American roots on Saturday with Neal Vitullo & The Vipers. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom tonight with Boy Harsher, along with Olivia Neutron-John and Lasuje. On Tuesday, they headline Kimya Sawson, appearing with Shellshag and Your Heart Breaks. On Wednesday you can catch Com Truise, Photay, and Beshken, and on Friday they’ve got Slaughter Beach, Dog, and Cave People. They headline Darlingside on Saturday, appearing with Henry Jamison, and on Sunday it’s Mat Kerekes, Shortly, and Teamonade. At the College Street Music Hall, they bring you Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Illiterate Light on Friday. Back in Hartford, there’s a Kizomba Public Dance Session at Union Station at 6 pm, and the Hartford Jazz Orchestra performs at the Arch Street Tavern. Elizabeth Park hosts a free Rose Garden Tour Wednesday morning, and it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell in the evening. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music Series continues on Thursday with hip-hop artist Tang Sauce, and singer/songwriter Charlie Marie is at the Hog River Brewing Company in the evening. Hog River hosts a coffee brewing competition Friday morning, and Band of Steady Habits performs at the Old State House Farmer’s Market at noon. The Nick Di Maria Quartet will be at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company Friday evening. Trinity College hosts the 23rd Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival Hartford this weekend, with concerts on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon by organist Christopher Houlihan and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Saturday events include organ and hymn playing competitions, and an evensong concert. Veterans and military service members are invited to a rowing and kayaking session Saturday morning at Riverside Park, and Cedar Hill Cemetery sponsors a tour of notable physicians. There’s an Oktoberfest event at the Bushnell Beer Garden Saturday afternoon, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturday in the evening at the Red Rock Tavern. The Russell Library in Middletown sponsors a MARC community resources presentation tonight at 6 pm. Learn about programs for persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities, as well as volunteer opportunities. The Job and Career Center hosts Tina Kadish Tuesday evening with her workshop, “Create a Growth Mindset.” There’s a Census Employment Information Session Wednesday at 4 pm, followed by Scrabble Wednesday and a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society. The library is closed Friday from 9 am to 1 pm for staff development, and they host Yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts Phil Buchanan on Tuesday in conversation with Elysa Gordon, to discuss his new book, “Giving Done Right.” Their lunch event on Wednesday is “Books on the Menu,” where you get the inside scoop on store favorites, and in the evening they host a Local Author Program on fiction with Cana Buckmir, L.M. Pampuro, and J.R. McCabe. On Thursday, bookstore founder Roxanne Coady holds a conversation with Wesleyan President Michael S. Roth to discuss “Safe Enough Spaces,” his manifesto on current issues in higher education. Russian author Yuz Aleshkovsky speaks with Duffield White and Susanne Fusso on Friday about his novels, “Nikolai Nikolaevich” and “Camouflage.” It’s the monthly Philosphy Night on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon they host a session of the Well-Read Black Girl Book Club to discuss “Dear Haiti, Love Alaine.” Kids’ events continue this week and include learning Spanish, comic book making, and more. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Technical Theater & Design class and Hip-Hop dance class for teens continue this week at Oddfellows Playhouse. The Godfrey Memorial Library provides Research Help sessions Friday at 9:30 am. Infinity Hall Hartford Norfolk brings you classic swing on Wednesday with Big Bad VooDoo. On Friday, it’s alternative rock with The Samples, and on Sunday they host singer/songwriter Howie Day. At Infinity Norfolk you can catch New Age and progressive rock on Thursday with the California Guitar Trio, and they’ve got blues, jazz, and more on Friday with Duke Robillard. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors an Artist Talk on Thursday at the Cross Street Dance Studio on The Choreography of Rehabilitation: Disability and Race in Balanchine’s Agon. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles,” a documentary about the legacy of “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; and “Say Amen, Somebody,” a documentary about the world of gospel music. All run through Thursday. Upcoming openings include “Downton Abbey,” “Midnight Traveler, and “Monos.” Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes the run of “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” the story of the man behind the horn, on Wednesday. On Thursday they open Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood,” a film about the turbulent ‘60’s. Sunday’s National Theatre Live matinée is “One Man, Two Guvnors,” a tribute to British comedy, and in the evening they open a run of “Aquaréla,” a celebration of the beauty and power of water. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against our current system and to create something newer, freer and more liberating for us all.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 1:30 am it’s Influenza with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists  to expose how they found their direction.

From 1:30-2:30am The Beatles: A Week in the Life with DJ McKenzie tells the story of The Beatles, their contemporaries, and the artists and songs that inspired them, a week at a time.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking: directors, cinematographers, composers, writers, and animators from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
