programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio
from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best
in free-form programming.
I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango,
heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear
uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope

this week:
In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines
Space Kadet, appearing with Strawberry Cheesesteak and Doey Joey. Manic also
brings you The Toasters on Tuesday, along with Ghost Tones and Sonorous Rising.
On Wednesday you can enjoy Ditch Boys, Say What You Will, North By North, and
Portrait Party. Southern Culture on the Skids and Lara Hope’s Gold Hope Duo
take the stage on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte, and
the late show brings you Lex the Lexicon Artist, Super Smack, Ashley Hamel, and
DonutShoes. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends,
followed by The Bobby Lees, Warbats, and Zero Years. The Sunday Buzz Matinée
features Divided Heaven, The Sawtelles, and more, and they round out the

The State House in New Haven holds
an Open Mic for artists tonight with Steve Rodgers, featuring Frank Critelli. You
can create and connect on Tuesday by joining an open session of The Jam. It’s
rock, soul, and blues on Thursday with The Let Loose and Joey Wit & The
Definition. Los Wembler’s de Iquitos brings Peruvian cumbia from the Amazon to
the stage on Saturday, and on Sunday you can hear heavy sludge and doom with
Fistula, Grizzlor, and Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean. www.statehousepresents.com
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, their Jazz Mondays
session features the Jason Clotter Quartet. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra
brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s
Community Blues Jam is hosted by Gene Donaldson, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s
Invitational. Sally’s holds their annual Northeast Blues Harmonica Showcase on
Friday night, and on Saturday you can catch Washboard Slim & The Bluelights,
who bring you roots and blues with their Diva Show. Check the website for

Back in Hartford, The Hartford
Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight, and you can learn Kizomba
at a Public Dance Session at Union Station. Cedar Hill Cemetery holds a
Highlight Tour Wednesday at 10 am, and a Stargazing event Thursday evening. It’s
Karaoke Night at the Russell this Wednesday evening. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series
continues on Thursday at noon with Farewood. The Meadows Brothers are at the
Hog River Brewing Company Thursday evening. Books on Pratt, an author street
fair with live music, poetry, and special guests, happens Friday starting at
11:30 am. Last Fair Deal performs at the CT Old State House Farmer’s Market on
Friday at noon, and there’s a Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Party in the evening
on Pratt Street. The Arbor Arts Center, home to local artists and artisans,
holds an Open House Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm, and the city hosts a 90’s Bar

Manic Presents is at the Space
Ballroom tonight with Boy Harsher, along with Olivia Neutron-John and Lasuje.
On Tuesday, they headline Kimya Sawson, appearing with Shellshag and Your Heart
Breaks. On Wednesday you can catch Com Truise, Photay, and Beshken, and on
Friday they’ve got Slaughter Beach, Dog, and Cave People. They headline
Darlingside on Saturday, appearing with Henry Jamison, and on Sunday it’s Mat
Kerekes, Shortly, and Teamonade. At the College Street Music Hall, they bring
you Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Illiterate Light on Friday. On Saturday,

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts Laughter
Yoga with Dawn tomorrow, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing. You can
enjoy a Gong and Sound Meditation on Thursday, and on Friday, the traditional
Irish trio New Leaf holds a CD Release Party. They host a Teen Open Mic
Saturday afternoon, and in the evening it’s Hola Pops!, an Afro-Cuban trio with
a night of originals and a tribute to Louis Armstrong. There’s a Reiki Level 1
class on Sunday, and the Buttonwood invites you to enjoy their September

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore holds
their Local Author Program tonight on Mind, Body, Sprit, presenting Jonathan
Alpert, Lisa Blackman, Tracy Mehr-Muska, and Adella Moore. Their monthly Open
Mic event happens Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm. They host Fairfield University
professor Ralph Coury on Wednesday with his new book, “Skeptics of Islam,” and
on Thursday Sarah Townsend discusses her memoir, “Setting the Wire,” with Sara
McCrea. On Saturday afternoon, Stephan Allison will present “be full,” the last
book of poetry by Middletown’s first Poet Laureate, the late Susan Allison. Kids’
events continue this week and include a paint workshop, comic book making, and

The Middletown Arts & Culture
Office announces that Oddfellow’s Playhouse is holding auditions for their
adaptation of Chekov’s “The Seagull” tonight and tomorrow at 6:30 pm. And their
Technical Theater & Design class starts Wednesday, with Hip-Hop dance
classes starting Thursday at Oddfellow’s. A Tapestry Weaving workshop series
with Brenda Osborn begins Wednesday at Wesleyan Potters. The Community
Foundation of Middlesex County hosts Every Little Beat Helps Saturday at 1 pm
at the Celtic Cavern in Middletown, where you can enjoy music by the PBA Pipes
& Drums and help support local musicians. The Nick DiMaria Quartet is at

The Russell Library in Middletown has the usual
Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm, followed by a workshop, Composting 101. The
Veterans Writing Group meets at the North Branford Library on Thursday this

conjunction with Liberty Bank: Know Before You Go House-Hunting. Consult the

Wesleyan University’s Center for
the Arts holds an Opening Reception and walkthrough for the new exhibition,
“The Imperial Ghost in the Neoliberal Machine (Figuring the CIA),” at the
Mansfield Freeman Center Wednesday at noon. In the evening, there’s a free
concert of “Sound/Material” at World Music Hall. A panel discussion on gender
performance and queer histories in sound and dance takes place Thursday at 4:30
at the Allbritton Center, and there’s an Artist Talk with artists featured in
the new Pompeii/Pantheon exhibit at the Ring Performing Arts Hall Thursday as
well. A Conversation with performance artist Taylor Mac happens Friday at 6 pm
at Memorial Chapel. You can purchase tickets for the Regional Dance Development
Initiative that takes place Saturday at 10 am at the Cross Street Dance Studio.
And at 5 pm, you’re invited to a special Queer Cocktail Hour at Conspiracy that
happens before the Connecticut premier of “Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of

Grammy Award-winning flutist Rhonda Larson, “Winds of the World,” Sunday at 3

Norfolk brings you Celtic favorites with The High Kings on Wednesday. Catch
folk and rock with a Scottish twist, including bagpipes, on Thursday with
Skerryvore. Enjoy folk and rock from North Carolina on Saturday with River
Whyless. At Infinity Hartford, they bring you Live Wire on Thursday, the #1
AC/DC Tribute band. On Friday, you can enjoy rock music with a community theme
by the Adam Ezra Group. Star Kitchen takes the stage on Saturday night with funk
and rock ‘n’ roll, along with special guests Rob Somerville, Rob Volo, and

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts AR-15 and
Cikada on Thursday. On Friday, you can catch Zombii, Static Nerves, Cherry Pop,

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track
in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Fiddler: A
Miracle of Miracles,” a documentary about the legacy of “Fiddler on the Roof,”
and “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal
artist, through Thursday. Upcoming openings include “Say Amen, Somebody,”

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes the
run of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” the final cut version, tonight
and tomorrow. On Wednesday they celebrate Art House Theater Day and their 50th
anniversary season with a one-night screening of Robert Downey Sr.’s 1969
counter-culture classic, “Putney Swope.”
On Thursday they open “Midsommar,” a Director’s Cut version of this
Swedish film about a New Pagan commune celebrating ancient rituals. “Miles

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle
chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against

us all.
From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson
offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with

profound and lasting influence on popular culture and current artists of today.
From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides
a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking: directors,
cinematographers, composers, writers, and animators from across the globe.
From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of
the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.
Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is
the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each
weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
