Tuesday 3-5-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, March 5th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Marianne O’Hare producer of Conversations on Healthcare.  Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
Tonight, at 6pm in meeting rm 2, The Russell Library’s Racial Justice Book Group: discusses The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein. Thursday night the library hosts the ongoing the Veterans’ Writing Group, We Were There. This weekend brings another Friends of the Library Book Sale.  www.russelllibrary.org

Also h­­­ere in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Laughter Yoga and Interplay with Mylene this evening. Simple Tai Chi happens Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon at The Buttonwood and Thursday brings the long running Acoustic Open Mic night with Bob Gotta. On Friday, at The Buttonwood Tree, the Laszlo Gardony and Marco Pignataro duo takes the stage. Saturday the Aligned with Source personal development meditation and workshop happens in the morning. Saturday evening you can catch New Leaf Irish Band and Sunday, the Buttonwood tree finishes out the week with an International Women’s Day Art Reception. In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight brings appearances by Dead Horses and Honeysucks. Tomorrow Wednesday you can catch Bobby Long with Jared Knapik at Café Nine. On Thursday, there’s a Townes Van Zandt Tribute. Friday, Mike Hatfield plays the 5pm Café Nine Happy Hour set. Friday night Daniprobably, Lys Guillorn and Her Band and Mooncha take the Café Nine stage. Saturday afternoon Café nine’s weekly 4pm Jazz Jam Session with Gary Grippo and Friends. Saturday night Left on Scarlet Street shares a bill with One and Done and Stephanie Austin. On Sunday, Café Nine hosts a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Party with Jovial Crew and in the evening it’s Póg Mo Thóin.http://www.cafenine.com/  

At the State House in New Haven tonight, there’s a Fat Tuesday celebration with the legendary Zydegroove, followed by Poole Party with Chuckie Campbell and Manny James on Friday. Junk Fed’s Pop Culture Bazaar brings you a Saturday Afternoon flea market featuring vendors of all kinds, and on Sunday it’s a local indie rock night with Joe Division, Dangerous Animals and Zero Years. https://statehousepresents.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday nights.  Today you can expect a little extra Ne Orleans at Sally’s as they celebrate Fat Tuesday with a special dinner and related events. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Mark Nomad, and it’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday with special guests. On Friday night, the I.B.M. band takes the stage, and the N.E. Toad’s Place brings you an early show J.I.D. with Trap’n Hardo, Lou the Human, and Reason, on their Catch Me If You Can tour on Wednesday. On Thursday it’s Westside Gun / Conway / Benny the Butcher with The Red Baron and Friday at Toad’s Place is Talkpeck Soundsystem, celebrating the sounds of Talking Heads, Vulfpeck, and LCD Sound System. The Tower of Power 50th Anniversary tour stops at Infinity Hall Hartford This Thursday. Friday Night the Red Hot Chili Pipers take the Infinity Hartford stage. Saturday at Infinty Hartford brings Moondance, a tribute to Van Morrison. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience. Also continuing is the 2018 3x Oscar winning film “Roma”, which provides an intimate look at life in Mexico city in the 1970s as well as “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues   “If Beale Street Could Talk”. Thursday, Cinestudio brings SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE to the screen. Full details and screening times will be at http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the Jive at Five, stay tuned for Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat from 5:05-6pm. DJ
Cheshire Cat says: I’ve got a song in my heart, a chemical imbalance in my head and a musical library at my fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

From 6-9pm (tonight) catch Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill - an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. 

From 8-9pm, Bill Revill fills in for J-Cherry. 

After J-Cherry’s slot, it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal until 10. To describe The Test Patterns Show would be an exercise in futility. The sound of things falling down the stairs.

From 10-11pm, DJ Joshinvents takes you to (1, 3, 5) The Audible Underground. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

11-Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

From Midnight-1am, catch (1, 3, 5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. We deep dive into a different album every show and give them the stamp of approval or the cone of shame.

From 1-2am, there’s (1, 3, 5) Road Trip with DJ G and DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists all from the same hometown. No gas money required.

From 2-3am, tune in to (1, 3, 5) What’s Goin’ On? with Sam. Focus on an artist with songs under 1,000,000 plays and deep-dive on their career and their music. Also catch music reviews.

At 3am, stay tuned for 2 hrs of funk, soul, and RnB on Up Front Soul from Sanguine Fromage from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
