Thurs 3-21-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, March 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here in Middletown, on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at The Russell Library you can Swap Your Stuff: Crafter Style at the Library.   www.russelllibrary.org

Also here in Middletown, this evening at The Buttonwood Tree. Andrew Prue offers a Gong Meditation. Friday night The Buttonwood Tree presents an Evening of Classic Rock with The Modern Riffs. The weekly Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and performers of all levels are invited to a Music Workshop at The Buttonwood Tree Saturday afternoon with Rob DeSorbo. The group 4 States of Jazz takes the Buttonwood tree stage Saturday night, and on Sunday there’s a Level 2 Reiki Training with certification. The #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show runs throughout March. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, tonight Café Nine presents Soraia, Dust Hat, and Gems, along with Kris Rodgers & The Dirty.  Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour performance features Jordan Giangreco, and the Friday night late show spotlights Future Punx, Pleasure Beat, and Glambat. Cafe Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, followed by the Saturday night main event featuring Alethea, Laundry Day, ditch boys, and more. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features The Alpaca Gnomes and Among The Acres, and Café Nine rounds out the evening with Shank ‘n’ Vibrate Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Liviu’s Invitational features special guests.   You can enjoy rock, funk, and more on Friday with the Michael Cleary Band. Locomotion, a party and dance band, is in the house at Sally’s, Saturday night. Friday, The State house welcomes Mauritanian famed musician Noura Mint Seymali and her band for a night of west African music featuring voice and psychedelic guitar.  Roots reggae artist Prince Royal opens that show.  On Saturday, State house debuts their first Pass The Mic hip-hop competition. www.statehousepresents.com

The free Spring Greenhouse Show & Tour at Elizabeth Park in Hartford continues daily through Friday. The Hartford Flavor Company brings you live music with Ysanne in their Friday Night Flavor series. They host The Great Hartford Story Slam on Saturday. Christ Church Cathedral hosts “The Curve,” with Iraqi musician and composer Ameen Mokdad, on Friday, performing with the string quartet in residence with Cuatro Puntos. The annual Connecticut Spring Show with antique and decorative arts takes place at the Connecticut State Armory on Saturday and Sunday.  The Hartford Library sponsors a writing center with free advice by UConn consultants on Saturday, and on Sunday at 3 pm, in the Baby Grand Jazz series, the Mary DiPaola Trio performs.  Full details at www.hartford.com/events

Friday Manic Presents brings Whindersson Nunes to the College St Music Hall in New Haven and on Saturday you can catch José González & The String Theory at College St. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden Saturday, Manic presents a night of hardcore rock with Into Another, Beyond, and Death Ray Vision. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, they bring you The Music of Cream featuring Kofi Baker and Malcolm Johns on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

Toad’s Place brings you J.E.D.I. (Jazz Electronic Dance Improvised), and Escaper, on Thursday. On Friday at Toads, Matisyahu headlines. On Saturday, there’s another Original Saturday College Dance Party, and on Sunday Toad’s brings you As I Lay Dying, Phinehas, and Currents. www.toadsplace.com

Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Shoreline Arts Alliance presents IMAGES 2019, the oldest jury-curated photography competition in Connecticut, opening today at the Guilford Art Center. There’s an Artists’ Reception Friday night, and the exhibit runs through April 6th. The 7th Annual CT World Water Day Art Show and Fundraiser happens at the MAC650 Gallery and Artist Co-op on Saturday. And the Skating Rink is open on weekends. Oddfellow’s Playhouse in Middletown announces “Circus Botanicus,” an original circus-theater piece about the secret life of plants, with performances Thursday through Sunday. Tonight is a “pay-what-you-can” preview. And there’s an opening reception Friday at 5 pm for the new art exhibit by Ada Varszegi, which runs through April. www.oddfellows.org

Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Americana troubadour and songwriter Robert Earl Keen on Saturday. On Sunday they’ve got Mark Broussard, appearing with Drew Angus. Infinity Norfolk offers an Open Mic in the Bistro tonight, and funk, R& B, and soul on Friday with Kat Wright. They’ve got alternative country and roots on Saturday with Reckless Kelly at Infinity Norfolk. Starting at 1 pm on Sunday they host the Southern New England High School Jazz Festival. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “To Dust,” a dark comedy about a Hasidic cantor’s obsession with his dead wife’s remains, and “Cielo,” a cosmic meditation on the night sky in Chile, through this evening. Also continuing is “CatVideoFest 2019,” this year’s collection of the latest and best cat videos. On Friday they open “The Sower,” a French historical drama about desperate love in revolutionary times. Also opening is “I Am Cuba,” a newly-restored documentary about post WWII Communism and Latin sensuality. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford, today through Saturday they’ll screen “On the Basis of Sex,” a biopic of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  On Sunday they’ll open “Never Look Away,” a German film about young lovers connected by a family secret.  Full details and screening times will be at www.cinestudio.org

Right after the Jive, stay tuned for Homegrown with Robbie DeRosa. Homegrown is the award winning (Best Radio Program 2016 Hartford Magazine/CT NOW) Connecticut Connected Music Show-playing Connecticut connected artists of multiple genres. Often treating the listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, the show also provides information about live shows in the area.

At 6:30 stick around for Imagine with Karen Stein bringing listeners Peace through music and where you can hear the best music from around the world and around the block!

From 8:00pm to 9:30pm, it’s Evening Jazz with Bill Denert. A broad range of swing, bebop and avante garde with a sprinkling of new releases. "Hearing is the best experience"

At 9:30pm Deni is in the house for some free form goodness helping to hold down the fort until students return from their spring break.

From 3 to 4am, it’s The Hour of Slack. Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others

And finally, rounding out the night from 4 to 5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
