Fri 3-8-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, March 8th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Also h­­­ere in Middletown tonight at The Buttonwood Tree, the Laszlo Gardony and Marco Pignataro duo takes the stage. Saturday the Aligned with Source personal development meditation and workshop happens in the morning. Saturday evening you can catch New Leaf Irish Band and Sunday, the Buttonwood tree finishes out the week with an International Women’s Day Art Reception. The #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show runs through the month of March! www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at Café Nine this evening, Mike Hatfield plays the 5pm Café Nine Happy Hour set. Later tonight Daniprobably, Lys Guillorn and Her Band and Mooncha take the Café Nine stage. Saturday afternoon Café nine’s weekly 4pm Jazz Jam Session with Gary Grippo and Friends. Saturday night Left on Scarlet Street shares a bill with One and Done and Stephanie Austin. On Sunday, Café Nine hosts a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Party with Jovial Crew and in the evening it’s Póg Mo Thóin.http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, the I.B.M. band takes the stage, and the N.E. Blues Harmonica showcase happens Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At the State House in New Haven, Junk Fed’s Pop Culture Bazaar brings you a Saturday Afternoon flea market featuring vendors of all kinds, and on Sunday it’s a local indie rock night with Joe Division, Dangerous Animals and Zero Years. https://statehousepresents.com/

Up in Hartford tonight, the Hartford Stage continues its run of the play Detroit ’67 takes the Hartford Stage with a narrative about the race riots of 1967 through the story of two siblings. Also tonight, the Sea Tea Comedy Theater holds an improv comedy night and BikeLIFE Build Nights invites you to help them build 100 bikes – all skill levels welcome! On Saturday morning, the Connecticut Historical Society hosts Silly Saturday with Dr. Seuss, a family program with Dr. Seuss related readings and crafts! The UConn Writing Center is also open from 12-4 to consult incomers on their projects. At the carriage theater throughout the weekend, you can catch showings of “A” Train, a play about a woman whose son is diagnosed with Autism. On Sunday, the Hartford Library continues its Baby Grand Jazz Series from 3-4. www.hartford.com/events

Manic Presents brings  Pinegrove and Another Michael on stage at The Space Ballroom tonight. Tokyo Police Club and Dizzy are at the Space Ballroom on Saturday and at the College Street Music Hall Saturday night night it’s The Wall Live Extravaganza. www.manicpresents.com

Toad’s Place brings you Talkpeck Soundsystem tonight, celebrating the sounds of Talking Heads, Vulfpeck, and LCD Sound System. On Saturday the Legion of Jerry takes the stage, playing with the John Spignesi band and Dead Show.  www.toadsplace.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a variety of events this week including a Thesis Theater Production of “Action” by Sam Shephard which plays at The CFA Theater. Saturday opens the 38th annual City of Middletown Public School Art exhibition in Wesleyans Zilkah Gallery, sponsored by the Middletown Board of Education, Middletown Public Schools Cultural www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Tonight at Infinity Hartford, the Red Hot Chili Pipers take the stage. Saturday at Infinity Hartford brings Moondance, a tribute to Van Morrison. Tonight at Infinity Norfolk, The Slambovian Circus of Dreams takes the stage and you can catch Kat Edmonson. www.infinityhall.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience. Also continuing is the 2018 3x Oscar winning film “Roma”, which provides an intimate look at life in Mexico city in the 1970s as well as “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. www.realartways.org

Right after the Jive, stay tuned for Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.
Next up from 6:00-6:30pm, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project with DJ Itsjobro, DJ Juicebox, and DJ Livor Mortis, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.
From 6:30-7pm, catch What’s In A Song? With Shiva. What's In A Song takes you through a different musical culture or genre every show through the lens of a single song.
From 7-8:30pm, it’s Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T. A wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.
From 8:30-10pm it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll. Travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly, and some new releases.
At 10 until 11:30pm, Chris brings you Permanent Collection. Non-toxic.
Following Permanent Collection from 11:30pm-12:30am is An A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.
From 12:30-3am, check out OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!
Rounding off the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am is Back Down the Bayou. Louisiana Barn Dance, Classic Country, Western Swing, Hillbilly, Rockabilly, Americana Music.
