Mon 3-25-19 Jive!


Good evening, it's Monday, March 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Bill Katz. Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen Laughter Yoga happens Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. Enjoy interactive comedy on Saturday night with FOCUS Teen Improv. The Aligned with Source Workshop comes your way Saturday morning, and in the evening, the Mattabesset String Collective takes the stage with blues, folk, and more. Part One of the Level 1 Reiki class will take place on Sunday, and the #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show continues through the month. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Monday brings you Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Mineva, Craig Mask, and Reduction Plan. On Tuesday it’s The Culture Showcase with Puma Simone, DrizzDaGod, Allen Blazze, and more. Wednesday’s headliners are Monoculture, and Elison Jackson. It’s 120 Minutes of College Radio: A Tribute to the 1980’s Underground, on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Bronson Rock, and the late show brings you DBUK, and Norman Westberg. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Thomas Ice, followed by by a triple tribute show with Straight to Hell, Bollocks, and The Hymans. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Rod Picott nd River Run, and the George Lesiw Band takes the stage in the evening. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays with the Tommy Lehman Group. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and it’s Liviu’s International on Thursday with special guests. Enjoy blues party music on Friday with Johnny Marion & Blueshead, and Gary Hoey is in the house on Saturday with originals and rock covers. At the State House in New Haven, Rohn Lawrence & Friends will Cure Your Case of the Mondays. On Friday, enjoy Ethopian Funk with the Anbessa Orchestra, appearing with Strawberry Cheesesteak. The Russell Library in Middletown and the Dance Department at Wesleyan University co-sponsor a creative workshop series, Moving Conversations, Making Community, tonight at 6 pm. Come help make a performance project! There’s a Career Program Workshop Tuesday night, Bet Out in Front of Your Computer and Get a Job. Also, the Classic Mystery Book Discussion group meets at 7 pm. Scrabble Wednesday is at 5 pm, along with Family Game Night, and the CT Poetry Society meets at 6 pm. There’s an original play reading debut Thursday, presenting “Maiden Matron Crone Masterpiece,” a work about the goddess archetype. The Veterans’ Writing Group meets offsite at the Acton Public Library for a panel discussion. A Make Time for Making Workshop happens Friday morning, and there’s a Container Garden Workshop for Families on Saturday, and on Sunday they kick off Money Smart Week on Sunday with a presentation on finding low cost rentals in the Middletown area. Oddfellow’s Playhouse in Middletown holds auditions tonight and Wednesday for their new Teen Repertory production of “This is Important!,” an ensemble play that opens in May. Details at www.oddfellows.org

Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown announces free events this week, starting with Graduate Recitals in Memorial Hall Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. Week One of the Senior Thesis art exhibition begins Wednesday at the Zilkha Gallery with a reception at 4 pm. Their Taiko Drumming Ensemble presents a Taiko Showcase Wednesday at World Music Hall. There’s a Senior Recital Saturday at World Music Hall, and on Sunday you can hear This Is It! The Complete Piano Works of Neely Bruce: Part XVII at Crowell Concert Hall. You’re invited to purchase tickets to the Sprint Senior Thesis Dance Concerts happening Thursday through Saturday. The Hartford Public Library and the Hartford Jazz Society announce a new series, Jazz 101, Monday nights for eight weeks at the library. Learn all about the sounds, history and culture of jazz. Connecticut’s Old State House holds a Noon Conversation Tuesday, Fiction vs Fact: The Real Story Behind the Reel Story, with inside stories of the making of the PT Barnum story.  Hartford Underground holds swing dance lessons Wednesday and Thursday at two locations. The 14th Annual Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival happens Thursday through Saturday at Trinity College. Rusty Williams takes the stage at the Hog River Brewing Company on Thursday, and the Nick Di Maria Quartet is in the house on Friday.  The Hartford Flavor Company offers live music by local bands Friday night. And the KingPorter BAM BAND is featured at this Sunday’s Baby Grand Jazz at the Hartford Public Library.  Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Susanne Davis on Tuesday, author of “The Appointed Hour,” a book of interconnected stories. Reserve a spot for lunch on Wednesday when staff presents “Books on the Menu,” a presentation of new reads. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces an Urban Homesteading series starting Wednesday at 6 pm at the Senior Center, with instructions on Making Homemade Chicken Soup Stock. There’s a Chalk Painting Workshop Thursday at the Mezzo Grille, and the Rockfall Foundation hosts a hike on Beseck Mountain in Middlefield Saturday morning. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Voyage, the #1 Journey Tribute Band, Friday night. On Saturday, it’s An Evening with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, King of Kentucky Bluegrass. At Infinity Norfolk it’s Open Mic in the Bistro on Thursday. On Friday, they’ve got singer/songwriter David Archuleta. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Cielo,” a cosmic meditation on the night sky in Chile, and “CatVideoFest 2019,” this year’s collection of the latest and best cat videos. Also continuing is “The Sower,” a French historical drama about desperate love in revolutionary times, and “I Am Cuba,” a newly-restored documentary about post WWII Communism and Latin sensuality. There’s a one-time screening of “Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church,” on Thursday, that includes his historic 1970 Atlanta concert. On Friday they open “3 Faces,” an Iranian film about a provincial girl studying drama, and “Woman at War,” a film about an environmental activist fighting the aluminum industry. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Never Look Away,” a German film about young lovers connected by a family secret, through Wednesday. On Friday and Saturday they’re screening “Free Solo,” a documentary about the first man to climb El Capitan without ropes. They open their 20th April in Paris film festival of French masterpieces one day early on Sunday, with the 1937 film, “Grand Illusion,” and the 1922 film “Foolish Wives.” Full details and screening times will be at  http://www.cinestudio.org/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, the French Film Group presents “L’Odyssée,” a film about Jacques Cousteau, on Sunday, along with a post-film discussion. www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to smooth contemporary sounds, it’s a well-rounded jazz show for true jazz heads.

From 6-6:30pm, it’s (2, 4) Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle. Radical Radiowaves chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country, to resist against our current system and to create something newer, freer and more liberating for us all.

From 6:30-8pm, it’s 75% Folk with Michael Benson - A mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

Until 9:30, Chip Austin brings you (2,4) Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

After Unfocused Folk, catch Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan until 11pm. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.
From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing billboard hot 100 hits of the 60's and 70's. Win a WESU beverage mug on our weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30am (2, 4) Influenza airs with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists. Various genres of music will merge here to expose how modern artists found their direction.

Until 2:30am, there’s (2, 4) Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Ween and DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day. A fresh theme every week and music that catches your vibes where they are.

From 2:30-3:30am Roots World is on air. Roots World Radio takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3:30-4am is Nutmeg Junction, a new originally scripted audio theater program that celebrates every genre of the golden age of radio.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
