the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime
programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio
from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best
in free-form programming.
Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
Tonight the Russell Street library hosts the ongoing the
Veterans’ Writing Group, We Were There. This weekend brings another Friends of

Also here in Middletown tonight, The Buttonwood Tree
holds its long running Acoustic Open Mic night with Bob Gotta. On Friday, at
The Buttonwood Tree, the Laszlo Gardony and Marco Pignataro duo takes the stage.
Saturday the Aligned with Source personal development meditation and workshop
happens in the morning. Saturday evening you can catch New Leaf Irish Band and
Sunday, the Buttonwood tree finishes out the week with an International Women’s
Day Art Reception. The #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show runs through the

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, there’s a Townes Van
Zandt Tribute. Friday, Mike Hatfield plays the 5pm Café Nine Happy Hour set.
Friday night Daniprobably, Lys Guillorn and Her Band and Mooncha take the Café
Nine stage. Saturday afternoon Café nine’s weekly 4pm Jazz Jam Session with
Gary Grippo and Friends. Saturday night Left on Scarlet Street shares a bill
with One and Done and Stephanie Austin. On Sunday, Café Nine hosts a Saint
Patrick’s Day Parade Party with Jovial Crew and in the evening it’s Póg Mo

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, it’s Liviu’s
Invitational on Thursday with special guests. On Friday night, the I.B.M. band

At the State House in New Haven, Junk Fed’s Pop Culture
Bazaar brings you a Saturday Afternoon flea market featuring vendors of all
kinds, and on Sunday it’s a local indie rock night with Joe Division, Dangerous

Up in Hartford tonight, the Hartford Stage runs the play
Detroit ’67 takes the Hartford Stage with a narrative about the race riots of
1967 through the story of two siblings. On Friday, Sea Tea Comedy Theater
invites you to their improv comedy night. Also on Friday, BikeLIFE Build Nights
invites you to help them build 100 bikes – all skill levels welcome! On
Saturday morning, the Connecticut Historical Society hosts Silly Saturday with
Dr. Seuss, a family program with Dr. Seuss related readings and crafts! The
UConn Writing Center is also open from 12-4 to consult incomers on their
projects. At the carriage theater throughout the weekend, you can catch
showings of “A” Train, a play about a woman whose son is diagnosed with Autism.
On Sunday, the Hartford Library continues its Baby Grand Jazz Series from 3-4.
Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that

Toad’s Place brings you an early show J.I.D. with Trap’n
Hardo, Lou the Human, and Reason, on their Catch Me If You Can tour on
Wednesday. On Thursday it’s Westside Gun / Conway / Benny the Butcher with The
Red Baron and Friday at Toad’s Place is Talkpeck Soundsystem, celebrating the
sounds of Talking Heads, Vulfpeck, and LCD Sound System. On Saturday the Legion
of Jerry takes the stage, playing with the John Spignesi band and Dead

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a
variety of events this week including the opening of a Thesis Theater
Production of “Action” by Sam Shephard which plays at The CFA Theater Saturday
opens the 38th annual City of Middletown Public School Art exhibition in

The Tower of Power 50th Anniversary tour stops at Infinity
Hall Hartford tonight. Friday Night the Red Hot Chili Pipers take the Infinity

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Rubén
Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a
world audience. Also continuing is the 2018 3x Oscar winning film “Roma”, which
provides an intimate look at life in Mexico city in the 1970s as well as “Never
Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. www.realartways.org
Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues
“If Beale Street Could Talk”. Tonight, Cinestudio brings SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE
