Weds 2-13-19 Jive



Good evening, it’s Wednesday, February 13th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free- form programming.

Now here’s some of what’s happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Laughter Yoga this evening and Thursday at noon. On Thursday night you’re invited to spend Valentine’s Day with Jacquelyn Contreras and Friends in concert. Waberi Jones takes the stage on Friday, bringing you jazz, blues, and more. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. It’s the Brett Bottomley Trio on Saturday with Latin, and jazz along with original selections. On Sunday, poet and playwright William H. Foster III presents “The Prodigals.” www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, you can catch the Comedy Open Mic, hosted by Dan Rice. The Valentine’s Day Lovers Lounge is open on Thursday with the George Baker Band. Friday’s Happy Hour features Dittymack, and the late show’s got Mile Marker Zero, Head with Wings, Junro, and The Morgana Phase. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, followed by the evening show with Fiction, Kyle Trocolla & the Strangers, and Passing Strange. The Sunday Buzz Matinée headlines The Live Ones, appearing with Dagwood, and they round out the weekend later with a Blues Jam featuring the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, this week’s community Blues Jam features Ray Morant, and it’s Liviu’s International on Thursday with special guests. The Ice Fire Band with Leo Boogie takes the stage on Friday with funk, R&B, Latin, New Orleans and more in both Spanish and English. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts Scrabble Wednesday comes your way at 5pm, and there’s also an author talk with Charles McNair, presenting his book, “Soldiers of a Foreign War: A Look Inside Daily Life of a Soldier.” There’s a Memoir Essays Writing Group meeting on Thursday evening, led by Stephan Allison. Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that there’s still time to get tickets for the 8th annual Artists for World Peace fundraiser performance on Broadway, happening this Sunday at The Green Room 42 in New York City. Wesleyan alum Pete Ganbarg of Atlantic Records will speak about Careers in the Music Industry Friday at 12:15 at the Gordon Career Center on the Wesleyan campus. And Superbody, Pearl Sugar, Harrison Lipton, and The Least will be at the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on Sunday evening. Don’t forget that the Skating Rink is open on weekends. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a performance of “Michael + Patrick: A Doll’s House Part 3,” Thursday evening at the Ring Performing Arts Hall. There’s a guided tour Saturday at 1 pm at the Zilkha Gallergy for the ongoing exhibition, Audible Bacillus. Next Monday at 4 :30 pm you’re invited to an Artist Talk at the Ring Performing Arts Hall with Sky Hopinka, the creator of the Audible Bacillus exhibition. All events are free. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Charlie Fisher performs at the Acoustic Thursday session at the Spectra Wired Café this week. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 pm. All are welcome Friday to the Ballroom Social at the Hartford Ballroom on Friday. The Nick Di Maria Quintet performs at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday at 3 pm in their ongoing Baby Grand Jazz series. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the month Full details at www.hartford.com/events/ Manic Presents headlines Amy Helm at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Friday. On Saturday, they’ve got Houndmouth, Ben Kweller, and modern Love Child at the College Street Music Hall. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford brings pop and rock to the stage on Thursday with The Weight Band, featuring members of The Band. On Friday it’s the Bernie Williams Collective featuring the former Yankees center fielder performing jazz, blues, and more. On Saturday you can catch Satisfaction, the worlds’s #1 Rolling Stones tribute band. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s Open Mic in the Bistro on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Wanted D.O.A., the worlds #1 Bon Jovi tribute band.  Now here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series in categories including Animation, Documentary, and Live Action, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a full-length Oscar-nominee documentary about two young black men in Alabama, as well as nominee “Minding the Gap,” about three young men bonding to escape volatile families in their Rust Belt hometown. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Shoplifters,” a film about a Japanese family’s solution to living in poverty, through tonight. From Thursday through Sunday you can take your valentine to the 1942 classic, “Casablanca.” Their Sunday matinée opera offering is Vincenzo’s Bellini’s “Norma,” and in the evening they open a run of “Cold War,” a Polish film about fatefully mismatched lovers in the post-WWII era. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors two free film screenings this week at the Center for Film Studies on campus. Tonight you can see “Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival,” and enjoy a post-film discussion. On Thursday they’re showing “Masquerade,” a story of a commoner who takes the place of a poisoned king in Korea, presented in conjunction with the ongoing Sound of Korea exhibition. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

From 6-6:30pm it’s (2, 4) The Smorgasbord with DJ Cristina and DJ Chip Chap, Delving into the world of local food, exploring everything from sustainability to where you can find the best bite!

Until 8pm it’s Fusion Radio with James Fusion. The original ... and still the best damn Techno mix on radio!

From 8-9:30 it’s The Warehouse with Mike Nyce - The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30-11pm (2,4), DJ Berk brings you N.E. Tempo. Dubstep, DnB, techno, ragga jungle, breakbeats mixed live.

11-midnight, catch (2, 4) East Asia Zoom In with DJ Hugo and Shujia. East Asia Zoom-in shares a trending East Asian movie with you, bringing in classic soundtracks in the movie as well as theme-related music from East Asia.

Until 1, tune into (2,4) Ladies Night with DJ Sense and DJacobs. All ladies, all the time! Tune in for music by femme artists through different genres, eras, and moods.

From 1-2am (2, 4), it’s Femme Gems and Jams with DJ Stevie Hicks. Each show will discuss the biographies of lesser known historical female figures and play a curated mixtape that she might jam to.

From 2-3am, (2, 4) Splitting Hairs with DJ Shake and Bake and DJ McKenzie goes on air. A humorous musical discussion show dedicated to analyzing the lyrics of popular songs, and finding their inconsistencies and comical meanings.

After splitting hairs, catch Noize in the Attic - Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
