Thurs 3-1-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, February 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.
Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with the theme of “Good Fit/Bad Fit.” The Aligned With Source Workshop is on as usual Saturday morning, and you can rock it out with the Sunny Train Family Concert Saturday afternoon. In the evening, it’s Moon Train, an almost-acoustic band playing folk, jazz, bluegrass and more. You’re invited to worship Sunday morning at 10 am with Rev. Ronnie Bantum and Pastor Sandra Steele. You’re invited to view the #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show starting Friday, that runs throughout March. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, you can catch Grawlix, The Right Offs, and Mickey Blurr. Friday’s Happy Hour features the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, and the late show’s got Dwight & Nicole, appearing with Tiny Ocean. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Um, Dr. Martino, and Fetzig. . The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings The Manchurians, and Bluescall, and they finish out the weekend with Japhoria. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, it’s Liviu’s Invitational  with special guests. On Friday night, singer/songwriter Kim Trusty sings blues, jazz, soul, roots, and more, and Grayson Hugh & The Moon Hawks comes back for a return visit Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 


The Russell Library in Middletown hosts a Teen Volunteer Orientation session tonight. Friday night’s offsite Book Group takes place at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga, discussing Jane McGonigal’s “Super Better.”  There’s Mindfulness Meditation Saturday morning, and bring your kids to meet Dinobrarian Rex! Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that Darling Fitch performs the poetry pop opera “Revelations” at the Mac 650 Gallery and Artist Co-op tonight. The Art Guild of Middletown holds a field trip to the Wadsworth Atheneum This evening for the American Moderns watercolor show.. The GM Chorale vocal chamber ensemble Alchemy performs Come to the Music Sunday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Don’t forget that the Skating Rink is open on weekends. Manic Presents moves on to The Space in Hamden tonight with Weakened Friends, Well Wisher, and Two Headed Girl. On Friday it’s Hailey Know, Brett Cameron, and the Como Brothers. At the State House in New Haven on Friday, they have Honeycutt with Mandala and Mooncha for a night of indie, alternative, and experimental pop. Saturday, you can catch DAP the Contract with Chef the Chef and June Jissle. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a variety of free events this week. On Friday and Saturday, the Art History Symposium “Canonicity Revisited,” takes place at Boger Hall. May Klug performs a Senior Recital at Memorial Chapel Friday evening. There’s a guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery. Also at the Zilkha, the experimental music group lucky dragons performs Other Transformations on Sunday. You’re invited to the Wesleyan University Orchestra Children’s Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo Sunday at Crowell Concert Hall. You can also purchase tickets to the Connecticut premier of “The Fever” performed by 600 Highwaymen, which runs Thursday Saturday at the CFA Theater. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Arch Street Tavern in Hartford brings Moon Matrix on Friday, and they present Strange Machines on Saturday. Mark Nomad performs at the Acoustic Thursday session tonight at the Spectra Wired Café. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Tonight at 9:30 p.m. First Friday House Music happens at the Tisane Euro-Asia Café this week. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you blues and Southern rock on Saturday with JJ Grey & Mofro, appearing with Jocelyn and Chris Arndt. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s Open Mic in the Bistro on tonight, followed by reggae and world music with The Wailers. Broken Arrow, a Tribute to Neil Young, is in the house on Friday, and on Saturday it’s funk and R & B with Grammy-winner Jon Cleary.  Their Sunday Sessions live music in the Bistro features Steve Dedman this week, followed by the late show, An Evening with singer/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. www.infinityhall.com

Join Author, Musician, Janet Ettele on Saturday, March 2nd at The Levi E Coe Library in Middlefield, CT, where she will discuss the every-day practicality of certain Buddhist principles to cultivate inner peace, a necessary ingredient for world peace. She will also perform original music with record producer Gary Lefkowith. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series, along with “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a documentary about two young black men in Alabama. Also continuing is “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience, and “Roma,” a movie of domestic strife and social hierarchy in Mexico City. On Friday they open “To Dust,” a dark comedy about a Hasidic Jew widower, and “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. There’s a one-time showing of “Water Makes Us Wet – An Ecosexual Adventure” on Friday, including a post-film Q&A with filmmakers Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens.  Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues  the 1952 Japanese classic, “The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice”. Tonight, they open Oscar winner “Green Book,” a story about racially mismatched characters in 1962 America. “If Beale Street Could Talk” opens on Sunday. Music from a variety of modern and contemporary film composers and soundtracks from
independent films

From 2-3am, tune in for (2, 4) WTF! (What the Funk) with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso
Exploring George Clinton’s concept of “the Funk,” as it appears across genres and generations.

From 3-4am, it’s The Hour of Slack. Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others
And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Editionfrom NPR.
