at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here
on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and
Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights
and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in
free-form programming.

Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, the Sarah Hanahan Jazz Quartet takes the stage Friday evening. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and the Other Favorites performance in the evening is sold out. www.buttonwood.org
In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, the Happy Hour features Gary Heriot & Mike Damaco, and the late show headlines Heartscape Landbreak and Dreamtigers, appearing with The Magnetic. Saturday’s (weekly) Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances this week and Polluter, Ourselves Alone, and Lucas Brode are on stage Saturday night. At the State House in New Haven tonight, you can catch hints of Colombian folklore, psychadelic-rock, and Caribbean grooves with M.A.K.U. Soundsystem with Prince Royal. On Saturday, they bring you local talent with Thabisa, and Jahan Nostra & Southwind Social Club.
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight,
singer/songwriter John Nemeth brings you electric blues and soul, and you can
catch more electric blues on Saturday with Monster Mike Welch &

The Russell Library in Middletown invites you to a Make Time
for Making workshop Friday morning, and on Saturday morning the Racial Justice
Coalition holds a free Book Giveaway. On Saturday afternoon the Readers Theater
performs “Ben Butler,” a play combining Civil War and racial injustice themes.

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a
guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery.

At the College Street Music Hall tonight, it’s Paul Simon’s “Graceland”
performed by the London African Gospel Choir, and you can catch Deerhunter and

Infinity Hall in Hartford brings jazz guitarist Al DiMeola
to the stage this evening. On Saturday, Speak Up Storytelling presents “Crazy
Little Thing Called Love.” You can catch The Corvettes Doo Wop Revue on Sunday.
At Infinity Norfolk tonight, they bring you singer/songwriter Will Evans. It’s
Doobie Others, a Doobie Brothers tribute band, on Saturday. Their Sunday

Toad’s Place brings Rock Away the Winter Blues tonight with
performers on two stages. On Sunday they headline Aaron Carter, appearing with

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts Five Bands—Five Bucks
tonight with The Sawtelles, The Lost Weekend, and more. On Saturday you can
catch Cry Havoc, Fragmented, Forward Assault, and Olde Dogs. You’re
invited to Brutally Funny on Sunday night as they host a night of comedy and
metal, featuring comedians Peter Angelo and Kate Clancy and heavy jams from

At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown this
evening, you can meet Elena Mannes, author of “Soul Dog: A Journey into the

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in
Central Connecticut:
Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways opens “Rubén Blades is Not
My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience. The
film explores Ruben's story, his legacy, and how he deals with being the man
and legend he is. They also open Oscar nominated “Roma,” a movie of domestic
strife and social hierarchy in Mexico City. Check the website for details and

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its run of
“The Favorite,” a comedy of manners about rivalry and love in Queen Anne’s 17th
century court. A new, 4K ultraHD restoration of “The Flavor of Green Tea Over
Rice” opens Sunday. The Japanese film follows a wealthy married couple in the
1950s through their marital struggles as their niece attempts to find ways
around her impending arranged marriage. Full details and screening times will

The Russell Library is screening episodes from the French TV
series “Un Village Français,” a drama about German occupation in WWII, Sunday

Next up from 6:00-6:30pm, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio
Project with DJ Itsjobro, DJ Juicebox, and DJ Livor Mortis, a weekly radio
program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in
the WESU neighborhood.
From 6:30-7pm, catch What’s In A Song? With Shiva. What's In
A Song takes you through a different musical culture or genre every show
through the lens of a single song.
From 7-8:30pm, it’s Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T.
A wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and
blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.
From 8:30-10pm it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny
Doll. Travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show
filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly, and some new releases.
At 10 until 11:30pm, Chris brings you Permanent Collection.

Following Permanent Collection from 11:30pm-12:30am is An A
and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden
gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.
From 12:30-3am, check out OVERDRIVE with Clarence and
Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and
traditional gospel music on the planet!
Rounding off the evening and swinging into the morning from
3-5am is Back Down the Bayou. Louisiana Barn Dance, Classic Country, Western
Swing, Hillbilly, Rockabilly, Americana Music.
