at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here
on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and
Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights
and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free- form
programming.
Now here’s some of what’s happening in our area this week:
Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic
& Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Ashley Hamel. Simple Tai Chi
with Mike McEwen Laughter Yoga happens Wednesday evenings and Thursday at noon.
On Thursday night you’re invited to spend Valentine’s Day with Jacquelyn
Contreras and Friends in concert. Waberi Jones takes the stage on Friday,
bringing you jazz, blues, and more. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens
Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. It’s the Brett
Bottomley Trio on Saturday with Latin, and jazz along with original selections.
On Sunday, poet and playwright William H. Foster III presents “The Prodigals.”

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Monday brings you Del Water
Gap, Skating, and Sam Nazz. On Tuesday you can catch Pinto Graham and Joe
Division. The Comedy Open Mic happens on Wednesday, hosted by Dan Rice. The
Valentine’s Day Lovers Lounge is open on Thursday with the George Baker Band.
Friday’s Happy Hour features Dittymack, and the late show’s got Mile Marker
Zero, Head with Wings, Junro, and The Morgana Phase. Saturday’s Jazz Jam
Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, followed by the evening show
with Fiction, Kyle Trocolla & the Strangers, and Passing Strange. The
Sunday Buzz Matinée headlines The Live Ones, appearing with Dagwood, and they
round out the weekend later with a Blues Jam featuring the George Lesiw Band.

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other
Orchestra brings you jazz, R& B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Ray Morant, and it’s Liviu’s
International on Thursday with special guests. The Ice Fire Band with Leo
Boogie takes the stage on Friday with funk, R&B, Latin, New Orleans and
more in both Spanish and English. The Bobby Torello Band comes your way

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts a Career Program workshop
on Tuesday evening with Dr. Marcia LeReau, “At It Again? The Recurring
Jobsearch.” Also, the Russell Readers will meet to discuss “Those Are as
Brothers” by Nancy Hale. Scrabble Wednesday comes your way at 5pm, and there’s
also an author talk with Charles McNair, presenting his book, “Soldiers of a Foreign
War: A Look Inside Daily Life of a Soldier.” There’s a Memoir Essays Writing
Group meeting on Thursday evening, led by Stephan Allison. The library is
closed Sunday and Monday in honor of President’s Day. Check the website for

Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that there’s
still time to get tickets for the 8th annual Artists for World Peace fundraiser
performance on Broadway, happening this Sunday at The Green Room 42 in New York
City. Wesleyan alum Pete Ganbarg of Atlantic Records will speak about Careers
in the Music Industry Friday at 12:15 at the Gordon Career Center on the Wesleyan
campus. And Superbody, Pearl Sugar, Harrison Lipton, and The Least will be at
the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on Sunday evening. Don’t forget that the

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a performance of “Michael
+ Patrick: A Doll’s House Part 3,” Thursday evening at the Ring Performing Arts
Hall. There’s a guided tour Saturday at 1 pm at the Zilkha Gallergy for the
ongoing exhibition, Audible Bacillus. Next Monday at 4 :30 pm you’re invited to
an Artist Talk at the Ring Performing Arts Hall with Sky Hopinka, the creator

The free Riverwood Poetry Series happens monthly at Real Art
Ways in Hartford, starting this Tuesday at 7 pm. This month’s theme is In Good
Time: Incarcerated Voices, featuring poetry by inmates at the maximum-security
facility in Suffield. There’s an open mic before the readings. Charlie Fisher
performs at the Acoustic Thursday session at the Spectra Wired Café this week. Little
River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 pm. All
are welcome Friday to the Ballroom Social at the Hartford Ballroom on Friday.
The Nick Di Maria Quintet performs at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday at
3 pm in their ongoing Baby Grand Jazz series. The Connecticut Science Center in
Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the

Manic Presents headlines Amy Helm at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Friday. On
Saturday, they’ve got Houndmouth, Ben Kweller, and modern Love Child at the

Infinity Hall in Hartford brings pop and rock to the stage
on Thursday with The Weight Band, featuring members of The Band. On Friday it’s
the Bernie Williams Collective featuring the former Yankees center fielder
performing jazz, blues, and more. On Saturday you can catch Satisfaction, the
worlds’s #1 Rolling Stones tribute band. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s Open Mic in
the Bistro on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Wanted D.O.A., the worlds #1 Bon
Jovi tribute band. Their Sunday Sessions live music in the Bistro features

rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: Hartford’s Real
Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series in categories including
Animation, Documentary, and Live Action, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Hale
County This Morning, This Evening,” a full-length Oscar-nominee documentary
about two young black men in Alabama, as well as nominee “Minding the Gap,”
about three young men bonding to escape volatile families in their Rust Belt

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues
“Shoplifters,” a film about a Japanese family’s solution to living in poverty,
through Wednesday. From Thursday through Sunday you can take your valentine to
the 1942 classic, “Casablanca.” Their Sunday matinée opera offering is Vincenzo’s
Bellini’s “Norma,” and in the evening they open a run of “Cold War,” a Polish
film about fatefully mismatched lovers in the post-WWII era. Full details and

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors two free film
screenings this week at the Center for Film Studies on campus. On Wednesday you
can see “Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival,” and enjoy a
post-film discussion. On Thursday they’re showing “Masquerade,” a story of a
commoner who takes the place of a poisoned king in Korea, presented in

Henry. From classic bop to smooth contemporary sounds, it’s a well-rounded jazz
show for true jazz heads.
From 6-6:30pm, it’s (2, 4) Radical Radiowaves with DJ
Oracle. Radical Radiowaves chronicles the actions of the left locally and
across the country, to resist against our current system and to create
something newer, freer and more liberating for us all.
From 6:30-8pm, it’s 75% Folk with Michael Benson - A mix of
contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.
Until 9:30, Chip Austin brings you (2,4) Unfocused Folk.
Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic
Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.
After Unfocused Folk, catch Cruiser’s Radio Program with
Jack Sullivan until 11pm. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE
requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.
From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z,
playing billboard hot 100 hits of the 60's and 70's. Win a WESU beverage mug on
our weekly "Name That Tune" contest.
From 12:30-1:30am (2, 4) Influenza airs with DJ Jamsterdam
and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary
artists. Various genres of music will merge here to expose how modern artists
found their direction.
Until 2:30am, there’s (2, 4) Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Ween
and DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts
and know-how about the thing of the day. A fresh theme every week and music
that catches your vibes where they are.
From 2:30-3:30am Roots World is on air. Roots World Radio
takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from
far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.
From 3:30-4am is Nutmeg Junction, a new originally scripted
audio theater program that celebrates every genre of the golden age of radio.
And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC
World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday
at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
