By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen and Laughter Yoga happen Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon, and the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with the theme of “Good Fit/Bad Fit.” The Aligned With Source Workshop is on as usual Saturday morning, and you can rock it out with the Sunny Train Family Concert Saturday afternoon. In the evening, it’s Moon Train, an almost-acoustic band playing folk, jazz, bluegrass and more. You’re invited to worship Sunday morning at 10 am with Rev. Ronnie Bantum and Pastor Sandra Steele. In New Haven, at Café Nine, there’s a Culture Showcase tonight with June B. Bougie, T-Fly, Badd Chargie, and Gale Salvo. The Jacob Jolliff Band and Five in the Chamber take the stage on Wednesday. On Thursday, you can catch Grawlix, The Right Offs, and Mickey Blurr. Friday’s Happy Hour features the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, and the late show’s got Dwight & Nicole, appearing with Tiny Ocean. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Um, Dr. Martino, and Fetzig. . Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and it’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday with special guests. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts The Connecticut Poetry Society holding their monthly meeting Wednesday evening, and there’s a Teen Volunteer Orientation session Thursday night. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a variety of free events this week. On Friday and Saturday, the Art History Symposium “Canonicity Revisited,” takes place at Boger Hall. May Klug performs a Senior Recital at Memorial Chapel Friday evening. There’s a guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery. Also at the Zilkha, the experimental music group lucky dragons performs Other Transformations on Sunday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series, along with “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a documentary about two young black men in Alabama. Also continuing is “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience, and “Roma,” a movie of domestic strife and social hierarchy in Mexico City. On Friday they open “To Dust,” a dark comedy about a Hasidic Jew widower, and “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. There’s a one-time showing of “Water Makes Us Wet – An Ecosexual Adventure” on Friday, including a post-film Q&A with filmmakers Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the 1952 Japanese classic, “The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice”. On Thursday they open Oscar winner “Green Book,” a story about racially mismatched characters in 1962 America. “If Beale Street Could Talk” opens on Sunday. From 2-3am (2, 4), tune in for Cover to Cover with Evelyn and Margalit. Albums selected from WESU’s vast collection played and analyzed through thought provoking discussion in the context of their creation and influences.
From 3-4am, it’s Up Front Soul.
And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
