Friday 2-15-19 Jive


Good evening, it’s Friday, February 15th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free- form programming.

Here’s some of what’s happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, Waberi Jones takes the Buttonwood Tree stage tonight/Friday, bringing you jazz, blues, and more. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening The Brett Bottomley Trio performs Latin jazz and selections. On Sunday, poet and playwright William H. Foster III presents “The Prodigals.” www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, starting at 5pm, the Friday Happy Hour spotlight features Dittymack. Later tonight, Mile Marker Zero, Head with Wings, Junro, and The Morgana Phase take the stage. The Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday evening Fiction, Kyle Trocolla & the Strangers, and Passing Strange take the stage. The Sunday Buzz Matinée headlines The Live Ones, appearing with Dagwood, and they round out the weekend later with a Blues Jam featuring the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com

The Statehouse in New Haven presents an arsenal of guitar punk, hardcore, and psych rock tonight with Screaming Females, Portrayal of Guilt, and Witch Hair. Saturday night and Sunday afternoon brings a 2 day State House Cabaret event featuring Magic, Music, Comedy, & Burlesque from Lipgloss Crisis. https://statehousepresents.com 

  
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, The Ice Fire Band with Leo Boogie takes the stage with funk, R&B, Latin, New Orleans and more. The Bobby Torello Band comes your way Saturday evening. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that there’s still time to get tickets for the 8th annual Artists for World Peace fundraiser performance on Broadway, happening this Sunday at The Green Room 42 in New York City. Superbody, Pearl Sugar, Harrison Lipton, and The Least will be performing at the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on Sunday evening. At Wesleyan, there’s a guided tour Saturday at 1 pm at the Zilkha Gallergy for the ongoing exhibition, Audible Bacillus. All are welcome tonight/Friday to attend the Ballroom Social at the Hartford Ballroom. The Nick Di Maria Quintet performs at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday at 3 pm in their ongoing Baby Grand Jazz series. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the month Full details at www.hartford.com/events/ 

Manic Presents headlines Amy Helm at the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight/Friday. On Saturday, they’ve got Houndmouth, Ben Kweller, and modern Love Child at the College Street Music Hall. www.manicpresents.com

Tonight, Infinity Hall in Hartford presens the Bernie Williams Collective featuring the former Yankees center fielder performing jazz, blues, and more. On Saturday you can catch Satisfaction,a Rolling Stones tribute band. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s Open Mic in the Bistro on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Wanted D.O.A., a Bon Jovi tribute band. Their Sunday Sessions live music in the Bistro features George Potts this week. www.infinityhall.com 

Toad’s Place brings you Mike Stud on tonight/Friday, appearing with Honors, and Ernest K. On Sunday Toad’s headlines Action Bronson, along with Roc Marciano, Meyhem Lauren, and more. www.toadsplace.com

 Now here’s a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: 
Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways opens a run of “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a full-length Oscar-nominee documentary about two young black men in Alabama, as well as nominee “Minding the Gap,” about three young men bonding to escape volatile families in their Rust Belt hometown. Through Sunday at Trinity College’s Cinestudio,  you can take your valentine to experience the 1942 classic, “Casablanca.” Their Sunday matinée opera offering is Vincenzo’s Bellini’s “Norma,” and in the evening they open a run of “Cold War,” a Polish film about fatefully mismatched lovers in the post-WWII era. Right after the Jive, stay tuned for Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.
Next up from 6:00-6:30pm, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project with DJ Itsjobro, DJ Juicebox, and DJ Livor Mortis, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 6:30-7pm, catch What’s In A Song? With Shiva. What's In A Song takes you through a different musical culture or genre every show through the lens of a single song.

From 7-8:30pm, its Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., for a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 8:30-10pm it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly.
At 10 until 11:30pm, Russell Fills in for Chris M’s P Permanent Collection for an hour of creative Non-toxic radio.

Following Permanent Collection from 11:30pm-12:30am, An A and a B with DJ N. spotlights the  unknown, hidden gems along with the songs a band is well known for.

From 12:30-3am, stay tuned for OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am is Back Down the Bayou.
