Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree offers Gentle Yoga with Theresa tonight, and a Gong and Sound Meditation on Thursday. Joe Flood takes the stage on Friday with Songs and Stories Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue(s). The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. Washboard Slim & The Blue Lights brings you blues, jugband and rockabilly Saturday night. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month. www.buttonwood.org
In New Haven, Kolonien takes the Cafe Nine stage this evening, and on Wednesday it’s a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice. They bring you Robyn Hitchcock on Thursday, and there’s a Record Release Show Friday with Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles, appearing with Roses Wild. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Ideat Village Rock Lottery. Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts a Blacklight Glow Party on Friday with Altered Reality and Panic on the Main Stage. They headline Zach deputy and the Yankees on Saturday, appearing with After Funk and Sarah Blacker. www.toadsplace.com
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics. The Community Blues with Gene Donaldson happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Friday, headlining Ripe, appearing with Joon. Saturday’s lineup includes Cute Is What We Aim For, Makeout, Minshara, and Brightside. And on Sunday it’s Speak Up Storytelling, with the theme of “Mischief.” They’re at the College Street Music Hall on Wednesday with I’m With Her: Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan, and The Brother Brothers, and on Friday with the Dark Star Orchestra: Recreating 5/5/77. www.manicpresents.com
At the Russell Library in Middletown this evening, the Job and Career Center hosts a workshop with Diane Lang, Emotional Detox – Dealing with Negative People. The Russell Readers present “Brownies” by ZZ Packer tonight at 6:30. The State Education Resource Center will presents a workshop on Finding and Using Low-Cost/No-Cost Technologies on Wednesday at noon for families and students with disabilities and learning differences. Scrabble happens at 5 pm, and there’s a workshop on Social Security Explained Wednesday at 6:30 pm. On Friday morning they present Microsoft Word: Beyond the Basics. The Friends Book Sale happens Friday through Sunday. On Saturday afternoon you can enjoy Classical Harmonica with Jia-Yi He and his String Quartet. On Sunday afternoon the Readers Theater presents “Church and State” by Jason Odell Williams. At Infinity Hall Hartford, they’ve got UConn Jazz: On the Road, tonight. On Thursday, it’s blues/rock with An Evening with Chris Robinson Brotherhood. On Friday you can catch Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” Tour with Sarah Lee Guthrie. Singer/Songwriter Shawn Colvin takes the stage on Saturday with Kerri Powers. You can enjoy funk and soul on Sunday with An Evening with Booker T. Jones. At Infinity Norfolk, it’s alternative rock and Americana with Carbon Leaf on Thursday. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to free recital, Rags and Riches for the Harpsichord, at Memorial Chapel on Thursday at 6 pm. There’s a performance of “Mr Burns, a post-electric play,” Friday through Sunday at the CFA Theater. Enjoy a free guided tour of the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition at the Zilkha Gallery on Saturday at 1 pm. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces the second “Art After Dark at the Mansion” event at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown tonight at 6 pm, a Christmas Pain & Sip. The Middlesex County Historical Society holds its annual fundraiser at the Inn at Middletown Wednesday at 7 pm. Professor David Blight will discuss his book, “Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom.” And the Community Foundation of Middlesex County holds a Pre-Holiday Fun and Friendraiser at Chester Marketplace on Thursday at 5:30 pm. Stroll the booths, enjoy a glass of wine and take a chance on door prizes to benefit the CFMC fund. The Middletown Recreation Department hosts Turkey Bingo for Everyone Friday at 5 pm at the Senior & Community Center. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Border,” a supernatural romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower, and “On Her Shoulders,” an award-winning documentary about 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad and the story of genocide in Iraq. There’s a one-time showing of “Brewmaster,” a love letter to beer, on Thursday night. On Friday they open “Searching for Ingmar Bergman,” a documentary of the famous Swedish director, and “Prospect,” a sci-fi film that takes place on an alien moon. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Black ’47,” about the Irish famine of 1845, through Tuesday. On Wednesday and Friday they’re showing Steven Spielberg’s classic “Jurassic Park.” On Thursday they open a two-day run of “Blaze,” inspired by the songwriter who began the Texas outlaw music movement. “Degas – Passion for Perfection,” will be screened Sunday as part of their Exhibition On Screen series, and they also open “Wings of Desire,” a Wim Wenders film about war-scarred Berlin.
