Fri 11-9-18 Jive


Good evening, it’s Friday, November 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in and around our area this week:

Here in Middletown tonight at The Buttonwood Tree, Arlene Wow’s quartet Vagabond Bandido performs at the Buttonwood Tree, along with a screening of a documentary that depicts her Cuban parent's arrival in the US in the mid 50's as well as the challenges the family faced. Saturday morning at 10:30 brings the weekly Aligned with Source - Personal Development Workshop and Meditation, followed by live performance by Dr. Steve’s - Twilight Zone Show Saturday evening. The Buttonwood rounds out the week on Sunday with Near and Far Storytellers “TELLebration!”  www.buttonwood.org

Tonight at The Space Ballroom in Hamden, Manic Presents offers Cursive with Meat Wave and Campdogzz. At the College Street Music Hall, tonight/Friday, Lucinda Williams and her band Buick Six grace the stage, before playing a set at the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

In New Haven this evening at Café Nine, Mike Hatfield plays the 5pm happy hour set show. Tonight, Friday night, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys playing with Little Lesley and the Bloodshots hit the Café Nine Stage. Saturday The Nine’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo and Friends at 4pm. Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey take the stage with the Shellye Valuskas Experience, Saturday night.  The Manchurians and Anne Castellano & The Smoke perform Sunday afternoon, and Cafe Nine rounds out the week with a performance by Y La Bamba and Fernandito Ferrer Sunday eve. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight you can catch the stylings of the Dan Doyle band on Saturday, the Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling appears at Sally’s.http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight you can catch a Blacklight Glow Party with DJ Mortality and TreFyah in the main room and High Risk and NightimeBurnOut in the rainforest room. On Sunday, you can catch St. Lucia and Arkells.   www.toadsplace.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown on Saturday Morning, you can check out the library’s Free Yoga Workshop in the Hubbard room from 9am to 1pm.  www.russelllibrary.org

This evening, the Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to enjoy the music and dance of Yogyakarta at the Crowell Concert Hall at 7:30 pm. There will be a guided tour of the Khalil Robert Irving exhibition in the Zhilka gallery at 1pm on Saturday, as well as a symposium on Enacting Ethnicity and Nationalism in Indonesian Performing Arts at 9am. At 2:30pm on Saturday, there will be a Wayang Golek Puppet Play in the World Music Hall. In this performance, Wesleyan Gamelan Ensemble teams up with Yogyakarta Court Puppeteer Ki Gondo Suharno and the Court of Yogyakarta gamelan group.www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

At Infinity Hall Hartford, you can hear Jesse Collin Young in Hartford tonight and Gregory Alan Isakov with Leif Vollebekk on Saturday. Tomorrow, Saturday World without War celebrates the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day - the end to WWI – with by hosting the CT Peace & Solidarity Coalition's Conference on "Why We Need Peace to Survive.” at Middlesex Community College’s Chapman Hall in Middletown.  featured speakers include Marc Eliot Stein of World beyond War, Maurice Carney - Executive Director of Friends of the Congo, and Summer Nasser -Chairperson of Yemen Aid. https://worldbeyondwar.org/

Cherry Street Station brings a range of punk, hardcore, and ska this week as it hosts the Benefit for the North East Oi Fest on Saturday. Raising money to bring bands to the Oi Fest, the benefit will be showcasing Cry Havoc, Easy Killer, Brix’n Mortar, On The Loose, So Long Liberty, and Olde Dogs. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Border” a supernatural romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be two special showings of “On Her Shoulders,” the story of a 23-year-old Yazidi genocide and ISIS sexual slavery survivor. Check the website for details and screening times atwww.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its run of Michael Moore’s “Farenheit 11/9,” about the water crisis in Flint, MI this week. Reel Rock 13, a film showcasing different rock climbing practices worldwide, is up for a one-time showing on Saturday. On Sunday, this season’s Bolshoi Ballet brings La Sylphide live from Moscow! Cinestudio also opens a run of Black ‘47, Ireland’s first full length feature that takes place during the famine of 1845-50, following an army deserter on his quest for revenge against his family’s landowner. Right after the Jive at Five, stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 feature Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott.  offering christian urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
