Tues 9-11-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, September 11th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

The Greater Middletown Chorale invites interested singers in all voice parts to audition on tonight/Tuesday at 7pm to join the ensemble for it’s 42nd concert season. Full details at www.gmchorale.org/auditions

The Hartford Public Library invites you to Game Night tonight/Tuesday at the Main Branch. The African American Literature Book Club also meets Tuesday night. www.hplct.org


At the Russell Library in Middletown, there’s a Career Workshop tonight at 6 pm on LinkedIn Part I with Dr. Marcia LaReau. The Russell Readers meet at 6:30 pm to discuss “Helping” by Robert Stone. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm. There’s an off-site Books and Brews session Thursday at 6 pm at Stubborn Beauty Brewing to talk about “Behold the Dreamers” by Imbolo Mbue. Next Monday’s noontime Book Talk with a Walk selection is “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. They invite immigrant artists to apply for their upcoming “New Land New Art” exhibit, and the deadline is next Monday. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on tonight/Tuesday. The Black-eyed Sally’s Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. On Friday, Poor Nephews brings you their eclectic repertoire and free-form songwriting, and on Saturday you can enjoy dance music with Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers.    http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  


Tonight/Tuesday Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden offering Bernhoft & The Fashion Bruises, and Jazzo. It’s Eyehategod, The Obsessed, Come to Grief, and Bone Church on Wednesday. Wednesday’s headliner is Perpetual Groove, appearing with Eggy. Friday’s bill has Big D and the Kids Table, Senior Discount, and Drop Party, and on Saturday you can catch Chapo Trap House. The Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Five Alarm Funk, and Phat A$tronaut appear on Sunday. They’ve also got Joan Baez on the Fare Thee Well Tour 2018 at the Shubert Theater on Wednesday, and Ziggy Marley and Steel Pulse at the College Street Music Hall on Saturday.  www.manicpresents.com

In New Haven, Sunny War and Sarah Golley take the Cafe Nine stage tonight, and on Wednesday you can catch the Craig Brown Band and City Streets Country Roads. Thursday’s headliner is Karen Meat, appearing with Shy. Friday, Café Nine’s 5pm Happy Hour shows features Off the Trax, followed by the Friday night main stage performance by Doctor Nativo. Saturday Café Nine’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends and begins at 4 pm. Saturday night Sarah Shook & The Disarmers and Stefanie Austin & The Palamino Club share a bill. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features the Charlie Hunter Trio, and Café Nine rounds out the weekend Sunday evening with a performance by Cory Branan and Daphne Lee Martin. http://www.cafenine.com/  


Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you The Next Big Thing along with In Real Life and Domini Monroe tonight/Tuesday. On Thursday, enjoy R&B and soul artist Rita Coolidge. It’s folk and folk rock on Friday with Gracie Day, Auburn Mode, and The Girls from Ruby Falls. Saturday’s headliner is Broken Arrow with A Tribute to Neil Young. You can also enjoy folk and pop on Sunday with the Kingston Trio. Ana Popovic takes the Infinity Hall Norfolk stage Friday night and   Leftover Salmon performs in Norfolk on Saturday. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to the Opening Reception for Chado-The Way of Tea, at the College of East Asian Studies Gallery on Wednesday at noon. The Wesleyan Youth Gamelan Ensemble classes start Saturday at World Music Hall. There’s a free concert at Crowell Concert Hall Saturday at 8 pm. Here in Middletown, on Thursday the Buttonwood brings jazz/blues musician Waberi Jordan to the stage. The Eric Mintel Jazz Quartet performs at The Buttonwood Tree stage Friday night. There’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon, and in the evening singer/songwriter Krista Baroni is on the bill along with Jack Zaino. At Toad’s Place in New Haven,They’ve got a Battle of the Bands on Thursday with Audio Contraband, Carried by VI, So Infamous, and more. There’s a Blacklight Glow Party on Friday with two stages worth of entertainment. www.toadsplace.com


The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series continues in Hartford at noon on Thursday with a performance by Belle of the Fall.



The One World Market Concert Series resumes in Hartford on Thursday at the Burr Mall on Prospect Street from 5-7:30 pm. Enjoy food from local vendors and live local music covering a variety of genres.

The Hartford Flavor Company on Arbor Street holds a storytelling event Friday at 7:30 pm with the theme, “Tell Me Another: The Hard Way.” And the Nick Di Maria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company at 7 pm. www.hartford.com/events/

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “We the Animals,” a coming-of-age story about working-class Americans. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Woman Walks Ahead,” the story of a female Indian Rights activist at Wounded Knee. On Thursday there’s a one-time showing of “Evening Shadows,” about a gay couple coming out in India. On Friday they open “Leave No Trace,” about a family living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest.  There’s a single showing Sunday of “Morazán,” a film about a Costa Rican trying to unite Central America in 1842.
