Tuesday 6-12-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, June 12th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Marianne O’Hare, Producer of Conversations on HealthCare heard on Wednesday’s at 4:30, right before the jive at five. Here’s a rundown of some of what's going on in our area this week. 
At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown, this (Tues) evening, you can meet Stephanie Mohr, author of “First in Fly.” On Thursday they host Anthony Pioppi, author of “The Finest Nines” and “To The Nines.” www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Tonight, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents book signing with Walt Thiessen, author of “Your Daily Dose of Happy.”  Jazz pianist Danny Green returns to The Buttonwood Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday the afternoon. You can enjoy gospel, folk/rock and more in Saturday evening at The Buttonwood with Jon McAuliffe. The collage and watercolor exhibit by Candice Weigle-Spier runs through the month. www.buttonwood.org

At the Russell Library in Middletown, there’s a Teen Volunteer Orientation kicking off at 5pm this evening, and Russell Readers discuss Rayond Carver’s “Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?” at 6:30 pm. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 2 pm and the Library sponsor an Educational Talk Thursday on Oh My Aching Joints! On Friday morning you can learn about volunteering for the Middletown Summer Meals program at their Blitz Meet-up. There’s an On the River Community Art Project Saturday morning. In New Haven, Tomorrow/Tuesday, Café Nine presents Urban Pioneers and Wolf Harbor. Tomorrow/Wednesday night, The Murder Junkies bring their 25th anniversary of GG Allen’s death tour to the Café Nine stage. Malcolm Tent and Fever Dreams open that show. It’s No Line North, SPOUSE, and Trevor Healy on Thursday at The Nine. Friday’s Happy Hour set features Bronson Rock at 5pm and later Friday night you can catch Willie Nile and the Manchurians. Saturday, Café Nine’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night Deaf Poets take the stage. The Café Nine Sunday Matinée brings you The Foresters, and they round out the weekend Sunday evening with a performance by Duncan Reid and the Big Heads. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesdays nights. Black-eyed Sally’s Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational. It’s blues and soul-jazz on Friday with the Jeremy Baum Trio, and Sacred Fire-a tribute to Santana, takes Sally’s stage on Saturday. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/   
Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom tonight/Tuesday offering Have Mercy, Kississippi, and more. They return on Friday with The Breakfast and The Mushroom Cloud, and Sunday with Tennis and The Telle. At the College Street Music Hall in New Haven Manic Presents Kurt Vile and the Violators, along with Connections, on Friday. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, they have a Comedy Party hosted by Taylor Grate on Thursday in Lilly’s Pad, and Riders On The Storm headlines the Toads Place mainstage Friday, appearing with INK, the Electric Lady Band, and more. In Lilly’s Pad on Friday it’s a Summer Starter with Something Young, Natural Law, and more.  There’s a Blacklight Glow Party on Saturday on two stages, while in Lily’s Pad, you they will offer CT Summer Vibes with Ro Bless, Ginnetti, and more. www.toadsplace.com

The Connecticut Historical Society sponsors an illustrated talk, The Gittering Past: A Brief But Dazzling Look at New England’s Historic Jewelry, Wednesday at 5:30 at their Hartford location, that includes a small pop-up exhibit. www.chs.org

The Greater Hartford Arts Council sponsors Art on the Streets Thursday at State House Square with activities and house band music with Mike Carabello.
Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford at 6 pm. Details at 
The Audio Feed music series in Hartford continues Wednesday at noon on Constitution Plaza. This week, enjoy Among The Acres. 

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series opens Thursday at noon with this week’s featured artist, Tang Sauce.

The Know Good Market happens every Thursday at 5 pm on Bartholomew Avenue in Hartford. Enjoy local produce, food trucks, live music and more.

Free live music happens at the Butler-McCook historic garden in Hartford monthly in their Sunset Sounds series on Thursdays at 5:30 pm. This month you can also tour the exhibition of jazz photography by Maurice Robertson.

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Tully,” a comedy about a bond between a new mother and her nanny, “The Gospel According to André,” a fashion documentary about André Leon Tally, and “This is Our Land, “a French film about a working-class mother running for mayor On Friday they open “The Desert Bride,” a South American romance, and “Who We Are Now,” a drama about a parolee and her public defense team. “Deconstructing The Beatles: The Birth of The Beatles,” also opens on the weekend. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford screen National Theatre Live’s production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” on Tuesday. The end the LGBT Film Festival on Thursday with “Becks.” On Friday they open a run of “A Quiet Place,” a horror film about silence.
