Good evening, it's Friday, June 1st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, at Café Nine, right about now, you can catch Lyn Malavolte’s 5pm performance. Later tonight, The Greyhounds and The Split Coils take the Café Nine Stage. Saturday’s weekly Afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends. Saturday night’s late show features Strawberry Cheesesteak and Added Color. Tonight at Infinity Hall Hartford you can catch living legend of blues and roots music, Taj Mahal.  Their country and bluegrass Backyard Music Series continues on Saturday with Plywood Cowboy, The Wool Hats, and Pat Stone & the Dirty Boots. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Through Sunday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of Little Pink House about the eminent domain case that drew national attention to New London CT. Today, they open “The Guardians,” a French film about loss and resilience in WWI. Also opening tonight is “Becoming Who I Was,” about a young boy’s trek to become a Tibetan monk. Saturday you can catch a screening of “Abe and Phil’s Last Poker Game,” and a post-film Q&A with cast member Pamela Dubin. On Sunday they screen “Mr. Gay Syria”, with a post-film Talk-Back. The CT LGBT Film Festival runs through the weekend at Trinity College’s Cinestudio, with screenings of “Ideal Home,” “After Louie,” “Anchor and Hope,” “My Best Friend,” “The Ring Thing,” “Snapshots,” and a Transgender Shorts Night. Check the website for times. http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who will take on back to the 30’s and forty’s with a mix of big band, jumping jazz, and rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school souls with a touch of Latin and African music plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and RNB spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 DJ Stevie B fills in for an hour of free form music. At 12:30 Unique Chiffon take over until 3am for a mix of reggae and RnB.

At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick of our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
