from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.

Here's a rundown of some of what's going on in our area this week:
This evening at 6pm, Middletown’s Russell Library invites folks to
Stubborn Beauty Brewery for a discussion about “Wonder”, as part of the One
Book on the Riverbend series. There’s Crafts for Adults Friday morning at 11
am, and the Friends of the Library Book Sale happens on Friday and Saturday.

Also at the Russell Library, on Monday, June 11, Readers Theater presents its last play of the season, "Ben Butler," a dramatic reading of a play that's full of wit, wordplay and wiliness. Set during the American Civil War, and with Richard Kamins playing the title role, "Ben Butler" has a message about racism that is still needed today. It will be performed at 7 p.m. in the library's Hubbard Room. The performance is free.

Hour 5pm bill features Alison Farrell, and the late show Friday night features
Boss Hog and Honch. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is
with Gary Grippo & Friends. Saturday night The Split Squad and Dust Hat
take the stage. Sunday Matinée brings you A Celebration of the Life and Music
of Stacy Phillips, a CT Bluegrass legend who suddenly passes away this week and
was schedule to perform at Café Nine this Sunday. The Sunday evening lineup

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents their long running
monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday)
you can catch the Louis Apollon Jazz Trio at The Buttonwood. As part of CT Open
House Day this Saturday, The Ultimate Emcee Elvee & Friends bring you a
street side Hip Hop performance outside the Buttonwood starting at 1 pm. Washboard
Slim & The Bluelights bring you blues, swing, jug band and more to the
buttonwood stage, Saturday night. The NEAR and Far Storytellers appear and later
Sunday there’s a reception for the June collage and watercolor Art exhibit by

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight Thursday it’s Liviu’s
Jazz Invitational with special guests. James Armstrong plays blues on Sally’s

The 2018 Portland Music and Arts Festival happens Saturday from noon
to 8 pm at Portland Riverfront Park, 284 Brownstone Ave, Portland, Ct. Rain
date is June 10th. The festival will feature continual folk, Americana,
blues, and rock music, along with arts and crafts booths and food vendors.
Performers include Ellen Iovino, Seat of Our Pants, River Run, C.J. West and
the Downtown Train, and Plywood Cowboy. Admission proceeds will
benefit The Portland Riverfront Park.
Veterans and military service members are invited to try out rowing
and kayaking Saturday at 9:30 am at Riverside Park in Hartford courtesy of the

Saturday, Middletown’s Recreation Division hosts a Nature Hike at
the McCutcheon Park area. A discussion of Native uses is included. Also on

Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways end their run of “The Guardians,”
a French film about loss and resilience in WWI. “Becoming Who I Was,” about a
young boy’s trek to become a Tibetan monk, continues through next Monday. Their
afternoon film “Tully,” a comedy about a bond between a new mother and her
nanny, continues through next week. Friday they open “The Gospel According to
André,” a fashion documentary about André Leon Tally, and “This is Our Land, “a
