Monday 12-2-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, December 2nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday. The Story City Troupe take the stage on Friday, and The Aligned with Source Workshop takes place Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon there’s an Artist’s Reception for the new mixed-media exhibition by Jenavieve Hawks, “Art of Paradise,” and in the evening you can catch jazz with Secondary Messengers. There are two performances of Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” on Sunday, featuring Peter Loffredo.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Common Holly, coming your way with S.G. Carson and Daphne Lee Martin. On Tuesday you can catch The New Neighbors, So Sensitive, and Amphis. It’s another Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday with Dan Rice, and on Thursday they bring you Hillbilly Casino and Hambone Skinny. Friday’s Happy Hour features DW Ditty, followed by a Toys for Tots Fundraiser with Joey Wit and the Definition and the Shellye Valauskas Experience. Mike Coppola and Friends are featured at Saturday’s Jazz Jam session, and then Frank Critelli hosts a Kaaterskill Music & Arts Fundraiser with Greenhouse, Bangcreek Puppies, and Fiction. The Sunday Buzz Matinée is A Tribute to Amy Winehouse, and the evening show headlines The Buttondowns.  www.cafenine.com

Up in Hartford, the Connecticut Old State House’s Open House happens until 8 pm tonight with refreshments, entertainment, and special activities. The Hartford Flavor Company invites you to Plant Night where you can create a botanical holiday wreath tonight. TheaterWorks opens “Christmas on the Rocks” Tuesday evening. The Old State House holds their Holiday Shopping Fair Wednesday through Friday with handcrafted articles from local artisans. The Wadsworth Atheneum 46th annual Festival of Trees & Traditions continues through the season, and the Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus holiday performance of “Making Spirits Bright” takes place Friday through Sunday. The Arch Street Tavern hosts Creamery Station and Joon on Friday evening. On Saturday, the KNOW GOOD Market holds its annual Holiday Bazaar with season offerings, a gift bazaar, and live music. The Artspace Gallery invites you to their Art and Soul Hartford Holiday Market on Saturday with proceeds benefitting ECAD, Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities. The Ishan-Terry House holds Second Sunday Tours this weekend. Winterfest Hartford at Bushnell Park continues, where you can skate for free seven days a week, or check out the Holiday Light Fantasia at Goodwin Park. Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. On Thursday there’s another session of Liviu’s Invitational. Enjoy blues on Friday with the Chicago Dawgs, and on Saturday you can catch Gary Hoey’s Annual “Ho Ho Hoey Rockin’ Holiday Tour” with instrumental rock Christmas music. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts invites you to attend free events this week starting with the WesWinds Fall Concert Tuesday at Crowell Concert Hall. The Steel Pan Concert happens Wednesday at Beckham Hall, or you can choose the University Orchestra and Concert Choir performance at Crowell. John Cage’s Musicircus will take place at Crowell on Thursday afternoon, and at 6 pm there’s a performance of “Inaction” at the Zilkha Gallery. The Youth Gamelan Concert is at World Music Hall Thursday evening, and there’s a guided tour of “Inaction” Saturday at the Zilkha. The Wesleyans Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble perform Saturday evening at Crowell. You can also purchase tickets to a Staged Reading of “Heartbreak County” Wednesday at the Ring Arts Hall, and the Winder Dance Concert, “Freedform” at the CFA Theater on Friday and Saturday. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts the Racial Justice Book Group on Tuesday to discuss “Born Bright” by C. Nicole Mason. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, and it’s Planetarium Night at 5:30 with Indoor Stargazing and more. The Veterans Writing Group meets on Thursday afternoon, and learn about Essential Oils later at 6 pm. The Holiday Swap Your Stuff is on deck this week with a Drop-off session Friday afternoon and the swap-out on Saturday morning. The First Fridays Book Discussion takes place at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga with the focus on “Gifts of Imperfection” by Brené Brown. The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts Hari Krishnan Tuesday evening with “Celluloid Classicism,” a book on South Indian cinema. There’s a holiday “Books on the Menu” lunch event on Wednesday, and in the evening the WESteen Readers meet for food and conversation. It’s Wesleyan Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day on Thursday with special discounts, and they’ve got more savings on Saturday and Sunday with Student Shopping Days. Manic Presents starts the week off at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday with Stephen Lynch and The My Old Heart Tour. On Thursday it’s mannequin Pussy, Kississippi, aand Glambat, and on Friday it’s the comedy of Brian Posehn, appearing with Gibran Saleem. They headline Pile on Saturday, appearing with Calyx, Crag Mask, and The Fiction Kids. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Wesleyan Potters 64th annual Exhibit and Sale continues, with live music on Friday nights. A proportion of proceeds will benefit the work of Gilead Community Services. The Recreation Division holds an Evergreen Wreath Workshop Wednesday afternoon, a Clay Ornament session in the evening, and a Teacup Arrangement workshop on Thursday. Oddfellows Playhouse holds its Circophony Teen Circus Showcase on Friday, and it’s Off the Record Indie Night at Conspiracy. Vinnie’s Jump and Jive offers Free Pictures with Santa Saturday morning, and Community Health is holding free Help Portrait sessions with free hair and makeup on a first come/first served basis. The 34th annual Holiday on Main Street continues with Holiday Story Time at the Main Street Firehouse on Saturday. The Wadsworth Mansion holds its annual Holiday Bazaar on Sunday starting at 10 am. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues three films through Thursday, including “Parasite,” a pitch-black modern Korean fairytale, “Pain and Glory,” about a film director’s reencounters in his declining years, and “Downton Abbey,” the movie version. “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese’s epic saga of organized crime in post-war America, runs through Thursday as well. Rhythms of Life and Community Health host a film screening and Drum Circle Experience Thursday evening at the Health Center’s Middletown location. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 1:30am it’s Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day.

From 1:30-2:30am Prominent Profiles with DJ Elliot takes a look at an historic artist that has had a profound and lasting influence on popular culture and current artists.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
