Tues 12-4-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, December 4th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Laughter Yoga today. On Thursday it’s the ninth annual Hip Hop for the Homeless event. Bring non-perishable food and clothing and enjoy the show! You can pre-order a Hip T-shirt; proceeds benefit homeless shelters and other supporting organizations. On Friday Story City Troupe returns with a “Holidays” theme. The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the afternoon there’s a Vision Board workshop with Flo. Saturday evening enjoy unique sounds from Argentina with Joe Fonda and The Tri Continental Trio.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, CafĂ© Nine brings you Cave, and Mountain Movers. Wednesday’s bill’s got Daze In, Keesh/Phoebe, and The Enigmas. It’s Acoustic Punk Night on Thursday with Kyle Trocolla, Houston Herman, Zombii, and more. Friday’s Happy Hour features Jordan Giangreco, followed by the evening show with Radio Jarocho ; Zenen Zeferino. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and on Saturday night you can catch Muck and the Mires, Palmyra Delran &The Doppel Gang, and the Pale Moon Gang. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features the Emily Duff Band along with Lys Guillorn and Her Band, and they finish out the weekend later with Hackedepicciotto, Eric Hubel, and Landing.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics this evening. Liviu’s International on Thursday features Rich Badowski. Blues guitarist Duke Robillard takes the stage on Friday, and it’s funk, rock, rhythm and more on Saturday with the Savage Brothers Band.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Racial Justice Book Group meets tonight to discuss “So you want to talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, and at 6 you can create a customized Family-opoly board game for your family. Workforce Alliance and the American Job Center hold an information session for job seekers on Thursday evening. There’s a Smart Searching Internet Research workshop on Friday morning, and in the afternoon you can donate items for their Swap Your Stuff: Holiday Style event. There’s an offsite First Fridays book discussion at RaMa Luna at 7 pm to explore “Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares.” On Saturday morning you can browse the offerings for the holiday Swap Your Stuff, and at 1 pm Professor William Foster III will present African Americans in Children’s Literature. There’s a piano performance by Alex Nakhimovsky Sunday at 2 pm as part of their Immigrant Artists series. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom all week. Enjoy Bayside (acoustic) and Kayleigh Goldsworthy on tonight. They bring you Mihali and Tracy Jo Acoustic on Thursday, and Priests , Empath, and Psychic of Orange on Friday. They headline J Mascis on Sunday, appearing with Luluc. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors free events all week, starting with the WesWinds wind ensemble concert this evening in Crowell Concert Hall. The South Indian Music Student Recital is on Wednesday in World Music Hall, and you can enjoy John Cage’s Musicircus Thursday in Crowell. The Youth and Beginner Gamelan ensemble performs Thursday in World Music Hall, and the Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble will take the stage in Crowell on Friday. Sound Systems, an electronics, percussion, and language performance, happens Saturday in World Music Hall. You can also reserve a free seat for the Thesis Theater production of No Replica, a sound performance in Crowell Concert Hall that runs Thursday through Saturday. Tonight her in Middletown, WESU is sponsoring Music Trivia night at La Boca Mexican restaurant on Main Street in Middletown. starting at 8;30 the event will be hosted by WESU's DJ Cheshire Cat, so the tunes are sure to be heady and the trivia is bound to confound.  There will be fun prizes and more!

At Infinity Hall Hartford you can enjoy Christmas with the Celts on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Laurel Canyon, the Acoustic Tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. They bring you Kashmir, the  Led Zeppelin Tribute Band, on Saturday. At Infinity Norfolk, you can enjoy bluegrass, classical and more on Thursday with Darlingside, featuring Henry Jamison. On Friday, it’s a Tribute to John Denver presented by Rocky Mountain Christmas with Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon. The Zac Brown Tribute Band is in the house on Saturday, and on Sunday, the Whiffenpoofs, Yale’s a capella group, takes the stage.    www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown holds a Holiday Books on the Menu lunch event Wednesday at noon. Get the inside scoop on the best holiday picks. They host a Community Open House all day Thursday and invite you in for refreshments and special discounts. In the evening, you can enjoy the Phil Kaye Poetry Reading, as he presents his new collection, “Date & Time.”  It’s Student Shopping Days Friday through Sunday and there will be discounts and refreshments with a student ID. Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that Keep Flying, Cold Collective, Halogens and more perform at the MAC 650 Gallery &Artist Co-op Wednesday at 6 pm. Mutual Benefit, Glambat, and Skating will be there on Thursday, and on Saturday you can catch Invalids, Ourselves Alone, Mineva, and The Refectory. The Wadsworth Mansion sponsors a Boxwood Tree Arrangement class Thursday at 6 pm, and will hold their Morning with St. Nicholas Sunday starting at 10 am.  Sophocles’ “Antigone,” performed by the Teen Repertory Company at the Oddfellows Playhouse, continues its weekend run starting Friday. The city’s Ice-Skating Rink at Harbor Park is open on Saturday, and The Recreation Division offers a DIY workshop on Tree Toppers at the Senior &Community Center. The Middlesex Music Academy on Main Street invites musicians to their Student Rock Band ensemble Saturday at 1 pm, where you can hone your skills of playing in a band. The Rockfall Foundation holds their annual Green Holiday Party on Sunday. Enjoy season food and beverages along with a silent auction. First Church Middletown invites you to their annual Holly Fair Saturday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm,. You can bring the family and enjoy Brunch with Santa &Mrs. Clause every Sunday before Christmas at the Lyman Orchards Homestead. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a benefit show for Brendan Keefe Friday at 7 pm with Joetown, American Trash, Illface, and more. There’s a Tree Trimming & Ugly Sweater Party on Saturday, and on Sunday they’re holding a benefit show for the California fire victims, with performances by Bears Don’t Care, Honch, and more, along with raffles. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Maria by Callas,” a biopic about the legendary opera singer that includes never before seen material, and “Chef Flynn,” a documentary about the precocious talent of Flynn McGarry. Also continuing is “Burning,” a Korean drama about love and mystery. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Becoming Astrid,” a Scandanavian film about the author of the Pippi Longstocking books. Check the website for details of upcoming events and screening times. www.realartways.org

Through Wednesday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues their run of“The Old Man and the Gun”, based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.  December 6th an 9th, present opportunities to catch National Theater Live’s telecast of  ANTONY & CLEOPATRA at Cinestudio.  Thursday Cinestudio Begins a run of The Wife, starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce.  http://www.cinestudio.org/

On tonight’s show, seven time Grammy winner Paul Winter will be live in the studio with Bill, starting at 6pm.

at 8pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry is a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.

from 9-10pm The Test Patterns Show brings you The sound of things falling
down the stairs.

at 10pm  (1,3,5) The Audible Underground with DJ Joshinvents. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

from 11-midnight, stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

at midnight (1,3,5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. A music show that searches for and reviews narratives, musical themes, and general continuity of albums. The show selects a collection of songs (on and off the album) to dig deeply into a new album every week.

from 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists from the same hometown. No gas money required.

from 2-4am stay tuned for Upfront Soul with Sanguine fromage from Pacifica.
