Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, December 13th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:



At the Russell Library in Middletown this evening, is an offsite book discussion at Stubborn Beauty Brewing in Middletown where participants will focus on Wishin’ and Hopin’, a Christmas Story, by Wally Lamb. Sunday is a performance of a new play, Osaki-san, William Gillette’s Gentlemen Valet. You have a chance to support the library and get gifts for your loved ones at the Friends of Russell Library Book Sale, in the activity room from Friday through Sunday. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven tonight  Lyon Street Fire take the Nine stage with The Penniless Wild on Thursday. On Friday, Mike Hatfield plays the Weekly Wind down Happy Hour, followed by Jason D. Williams and Buzz Gordo of Bronson Rock. Saturday afternoon it’s the Jazz Jam Session with Tony Dioguardi and Friends and Charlie Karp and the Name Droppers with Rocky Lawrence in the evening. "The Sunday Buzz" Holiday Matinee at the Nine brings Golden Microphone Holiday Ramble with The Hickups & Benny Mikula in the afternoon, followed by Hatfield, Daniela Cardillo & Billy Ruegger, Emily Angelli, and Matthew Bennett at night.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight at Black-eyed Sally’s you can catch Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests and on Friday at Sally’s, the new Music Alliance’s Northeast Thunder Tour stops by Sally’. In New Haven, tonight, at the State House,, it’s the Polluter LP Release Party, with Witch Hair & Sam Perduta. Friday, Ports of Spain has a record release with Split Coils and Mandala. Taco Hut presents its final show on Saturday with JOATA Ceschi, and Ani Cordero, and there’s a Holiday Freedom Drive fundraiser for the Immigrant Bail Fund starting at 4pm on Sunday. https://statehousepresents.com/

At Infinity Hall Hartford you can enjoy some serious female guitar shredding this Thursday with performances by Kristen Capolino & Desiree Bassett. Friday at Infinity Norfolk, it’s the Uprooted Band with Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root. On Saturday afternoon, the Glenn Miller Orchestra plays, followed by Aztec Two-Step featuring Rex Fowler and Friends in the evening. Infinity Norfolk is closed Sunday for a private event. At Infinity Hall Hartford, catch the Little River Band on Friday and A Father Son Christmas Tour from Nick Fradiani and Nick Fradiani Sr. on Saturday. www.infinityhall.com


Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, Friday night brings a performance of Sicilian roots music by vocalist Rosa Tatuata backed by the A Michela Musolino Ensemble. Saturday morning at The Buttonwood, brings the weekly Aligned with Source workshop and meditation. Then there’s Holiday Ornament Decorating at 12:30 in the afternoon. From 3-5pm Saturday, it’s the Buttonwood’s Teen Open Mic followed by an 8pm  performance of West African Jazz Fusion with Lorens Chuno. www.buttonwood.org
Toad’s Place in New Haven presents Keller Williams’ Pettygrass, featuring The Hillbenders on Friday and Cupcake performs on her Eden Tour on Saturday. www.toadsplace.com

Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that special mailboxes will be set up in all 8 middletown elementary schools and the chamber of commerce to send letters to santa, through Christmas Eve. The City of Middletown’s skating rink in Harbor Park will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm. The Holiday Light Fantasia drive-through at Goodwin Park in Hartford is open, and there’s free ice skating in Bushnell Park seven days a week. www.hartford.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its run of “Becoming Astrid,” a Scandanavian film about the author of the Pippi Longstocking books, and “Maria By Callas,” a look at the life story of the American/Greek Opera Singer Maria Callas. On Friday, they open a run of An Eternity’s Gate, a journey inside the world and mind of Vincent Van Gogh. Check the website for details of upcoming events and screening times. www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford  Opening tonight and running through Saturday, Colette is a biographical film about the French writer starring Keira Knightley. On Sunday, they open L’Atalante, a 1934 film about Newly married couple Juliette and ship captain Jean as they struggle through marriage while travel on the L'atalante ship. http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Homegrown with Robbie DeRosa playing Connecticut connected artists treating listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, and information about live shows in the area.

At 6:30, its Imagine with Karen Stein offering 90 minutes of Peace through music.

8:00-9:30pm  you can enjoy Evening Jazz with Bill Denert offering a broad range of swing, bebop and experimental sounds with a sprinkling of new releases, where "Hearing is the best experience"


at 9:30 Let's Get Quizzical with DJ Crybaby and MC Megastar brings you a radio talk show that features two hosts trying to confound their guests - and each other - through trivia. 


From 10-11pm it's The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants - an exploration of the influence of american cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, Peruvian Punk, and so much more. 


Until midnight is This Just In with dj willy j, providing soundtracks and reactions to the most eye-popping news stories of the week.


From midnight to 1, it's Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee. Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period of each week. 


From 1-2am, DJ Jackson brings you the sonic hour - focusing on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etcetera. The show will compare music from a previous generation with its contemporaries. 


Playing until 3 is What The Funk with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso, exploring George Clinton's concept of "the Funk," as it appears across genres and generations. 


From 3-4am is the Hour Of Slack: Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others. 


Rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
