Friday 12-14-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, December 14th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Russell Library in Middletown you have a chance to support the library and get gifts for your loved ones at the Friends of Russell Library Book Sale, in the activity room today/Friday through Sunday. There’s also a chance to can catch a performance of a new play, Osaki-san, William Gillette’s Gentlemen Valet on Sunday. www.russelllibrary.org


Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, tonight/Friday night brings a performance of Sicilian roots music by vocalist Rosa Tatuata backed by the A Michela Musolino Ensemble. Saturday morning at The Buttonwood, brings the weekly Aligned with Source workshop and meditation. Then there’s Holiday Ornament Decorating at 12:30 in the afternoon. From 3-5pm Saturday, it’s the Buttonwood’s Teen Open Mic followed by an 8pm  performance of West African Jazz Fusion with Lorens Chuno. www.buttonwood.org


In New Haven tonight, beginning shortly at 5pm, Friday, Hatfield plays the Weekly Wind down Happy Hour, followed by the Friday night main event, with Jason D. Williams and Buzz Gordo of Bronson Rock. Saturday afternoon’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi and Friends. Saturday night CafĂ© Nine features Charlie Karp and the Name Droppers along with Rocky Lawrence in the evening. "The Sunday Buzz" Holiday Matinee at the Nine brings the Golden Microphone Holiday Ramble with The Hickups & Benny Mikula in the afternoon. Sunday evening Hatfield, Daniela Cardillo & Billy Ruegger, Emily Angelli, and Matthew Bennett wrap up the weekend.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight the new Music Alliance’s Northeast Thunder Tour takes the stage. Willa and Company round out the week, playing Saturday evening.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

In New Haven, tonight, at the State House, Ports of Spain has a record release with Split Coils and Mandala. Taco Hut presents its final show on Saturday with special guests, and there’s a Holiday Freedom Drive fundraiser for the Immigrant Bail Fund starting at 4pm on Sunday. https://statehousepresents.com/

At Infinity Hall Norfolk tonight, you can catch the Uprooted Band with Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root. On Saturday afternoon, the Glenn Miller Orchestra plays, followed by Aztec Two-Step featuring Rex Fowler and Friends in the evening. Infinity Norfolk is closed Sunday for a private event. At Infinity Hall Hartford, you can catch the Little River Band tongiht and A Father Son Christmas Tour from Nick Fradiani and Nick Fradiani Sr. on Saturday. www.infinityhall.com



Toad’s Place in New Haven presents Keller Williams’ Pettygrass, featuring The Hillbenders tonight/Friday and Cupcake performs on her Eden Tour on tomorrow/Saturday. www.toadsplace.com

Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that special mailboxes will be set up in all 8 Middletown elementary schools and the chamber of commerce to send letters to santa, through Christmas Eve. The City of Middletown’s skating rink in Harbor Park will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm. On Saturday, the Middlesex Music Academy hosts a student rock band from 1-2pm.  www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The Holiday Light Fantasia drive-through at Goodwin Park in Hartford is open, and there’s free ice skating in Bushnell Park seven days a week. www.hartford.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Today, Hartford’s Real Art Ways opens a run of An Eternity’s Gate, a journey inside the world and mind of Vincent Van Gogh, starring Willem Dafoe. Check the website for details of upcoming events and screening times. www.realartways.org

Through Saturday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing Colette, a biographical film about the French writer starring Keira Knightley. On Sunday, they open L’Atalante, a 1934 film about Newly married couple Juliette and ship captain Jean as they struggle through marriage while travel on the L'atalante ship. http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the jive at Five stick around for special winter break coverage by Karen Stein, host of our Thursday program, Imagine Radio. Karen will be on air until 7 when it’s time for

 the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T on air until 8pm offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 features Permanent Collection with Chris. Non-toxic.

From 10- 11:30, DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist presents Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

starting at 11:30 and continuing through 3am we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. offering a unique mix of  Christian infused urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
