Thursday's Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, December 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree it’s the ninth annual Hip Hop for the Homeless event. Bring non-perishable food and clothing and enjoy the show! You can pre-order a Hip T-shirt; proceeds benefit homeless shelters and other supporting organizations. On Friday Story City Troupe returns with a “Holidays” theme. The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the afternoon there’s a Vision Board workshop with Flo. Saturday evening enjoy unique sounds from Argentina with Joe Fonda and The Tri Continental Trio.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, CafĂ© Nine It’s Acoustic Punk Night on Thursday with Kyle Trocolla, Houston Herman, Zombii, and more. Friday’s Happy Hour features Jordan Giangreco, followed by the evening show with Radio Jarocho ; Zenen Zeferino. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and on Saturday night you can catch Muck and the Mires, Palmyra Delran &The Doppel Gang, and the Pale Moon Gang. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features the Emily Duff Band along with Lys Guillorn and Her Band, and they finish out the weekend later with Hackedepicciotto, Eric Hubel, and Landing.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight Liviu’s International on Thursday features Rich Badowski. Blues guitarist Duke Robillard takes the stage on Friday, and it’s funk, rock, rhythm and more on Saturday with the Savage Brothers Band.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, tonight Workforce Alliance and the American Job Center hold an information session for job seekers on Thursday evening. There’s a Smart Searching Internet Research workshop on Friday morning, and in the afternoon you can donate items for their Swap Your Stuff: Holiday Style event. There’s an offsite First Fridays book discussion at RaMa Luna at 7 pm to explore “Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares.” On Saturday morning you can browse the offerings for the holiday Swap Your Stuff, and at 1 pm Professor William Foster III will present African Americans in Children’s Literature. There’s a piano performance by Alex Nakhimovsky Sunday at 2 pm as part of their Immigrant Artists series. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom all week. Tonight they bring you Mihali and Tracy Jo Acoustic on Thursday, and Priests , Empath, and Psychic of Orange on Friday. They headline J Mascis on Sunday, appearing with Luluc. At the College Street Music Hall on Wednesday, you can enjoy Craig Ferguson and the Hobo Fabulous Tour.   www.manicpresents.com

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors free events all week, tonight you can enjoy John Cage’s Musicircus Thursday in Crowell. The Youth and Beginner Gamelan ensemble performs Thursday in World Music Hall, and the Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble will take the stage in Crowell on Friday. Sound Systems, an electronics, percussion, and language performance, happens Saturday in World Music Hall. You can also reserve a free seat for the Thesis Theater production of No Replica, a sound performance in Crowell Concert Hall that runs Thursday through Saturday. At Infinity Hall Hartford you can enjoy Christmas with the Celts on Thursday, and on Friday it’s Laurel Canyon, the Acoustic Tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. They bring you Kashmir, the  Led Zeppelin Tribute Band, on Saturday. At Infinity Norfolk, you can enjoy bluegrass, classical and more on Thursday with Darlingside, featuring Henry Jamison. On Friday, it’s a Tribute to John Denver presented by Rocky Mountain Christmas with Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon. The Zac Brown Tribute Band is in the house on Saturday, and on Sunday, the Whiffenpoofs, Yale’s a capella group, takes the stage.    www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown holds a Community Open House all day Thursday and invite you in for refreshments and special discounts. In the evening, you can enjoy the Phil Kaye Poetry Reading, as he presents his new collection, “Date & Time.”  It’s Student Shopping Days Friday through Sunday and there will be discounts and refreshments with a student ID. Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know at the MAC 650 Gallery &Artist Co-op . Mutual Benefit, Glambat, and Skating will be there on Thursday, and on Saturday you can catch Invalids, Ourselves Alone, Mineva, and The Refectory. The Wadsworth Mansion sponsors a Boxwood Tree Arrangement class Thursday at 6 pm, and will hold their Morning with St. Nicholas Sunday starting at 10 am.  Sophocles’ “Antigone,” performed by the Teen Repertory Company at the Oddfellows Playhouse, continues its weekend run starting Friday. The city’s Ice-Skating Rink at Harbor Park is open on Saturday, and The Recreation Division offers a DIY workshop on Tree Toppers at the Senior &Community Center. The Middlesex Music Academy on Main Street invites musicians to their Student Rock Band ensemble Saturday at 1 pm, where you can hone your skills of playing in a band. The Rockfall Foundation holds their annual Green Holiday Party on Sunday. Enjoy season food and beverages along with a silent auction. First Church Middletown invites you to their annual Candle Light Christmas at 4PM with a reception to follow,. You can bring the family and enjoy Brunch with Santa &Mrs. Clause every Sunday before Christmas at the Lyman Orchards Homestead. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a benefit show for Brendan Keefe Friday at 7 pm with Joetown, American Trash, Illface, and more. There’s a Tree Trimming & Ugly Sweater Party on Saturday, and on Sunday they’re holding a benefit show for the California fire victims, with performances by Bears Don’t Care, Honch, and more, along with raffles. The Holiday Light Fantasia drive-through at Goodwin Park in Hartford is open, and there’s free ice skating in Bushnell Park seven days a week. www.hartford.com


Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Maria by Callas,” a biopic about the legendary opera singer that includes never before seen material, and “Chef Flynn,” a documentary about the precocious talent of Flynn McGarry. Also continuing is “Burning,” a Korean drama about love and mystery. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Becoming Astrid,” a Scandanavian film about the author of the Pippi Longstocking books. Check the website for details of upcoming events and screening times. www.realartways.org

Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Homegrown with Robbie DeRosa playing Connecticut connected artists treating listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, and information about live shows in the area.

8:00-9:30pm  you can enjoy Evening Jazz with Bill Denert offering a broad range of swing, bebop and experimental sounds with a sprinkling of new releases, where "Hearing is the best experience"


at 9:30 Let's Get Quizzical with DJ Crybaby and MC Megastar brings you a radio talk show that features two hosts trying to confound their guests - and each other - through trivia. 


From 10-11pm it's The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants - an exploration of the influence of american cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, Peruvian Punk, and so much more. 


Until midnight is This Just In with dj willy j, providing soundtracks and reactions to the most eye-popping news stories of the week.


From midnight to 1, it's Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee. Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period of each week. 


From 1-2am, DJ Jackson brings you the sonic hour - focusing on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etcetera. The show will compare music from a previous generation with its contemporaries. 


Playing until 3 is What The Funk with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso, exploring George Clinton's concept of "the Funk," as it appears across genres and generations. 


From 3-4am is the Hour Of Slack: Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others. 


Rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
