Tuesday 12-05-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday December 5th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

 At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Racial Justice Book Group meets tonight (Tuesday) to discuss “The Street,” by Ann Petry. The start twenty sessions of Girls Who Code Club meetings on Wednesday at 6 pm, open for girls grades 6 through 12. Award-winning author William Mann will speak Wednesday on his book, “The War of the Roosevelts.” The Friends Book Sale happens this weekend, starting on Friday. You’re invited to their Make An Ugly Sweater Day workshop Friday at 11 am. The award-winning Avery Ensemble performs chamber music on Saturday at 1:30 pm. www.russelllibrary.org


The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown offers Laughter Yoga in the evening, tonight. Tomorrow/Wednesday morning, you can enjoy HulaZen Yoga with Tiare Kahana, rooted in Hawaii’s oral tradition.  Bob Gotta holds his monthly Acoustic Open Mic on Thursday night and it’s a double bill Friday night with Ashley Hamel and Orice Jenkins at The Buttonwood Tree. The Aligned with Source workshop is back Saturday morning, and Saturday evening’s bill features the Ken Serio Jazz Trio. Sunday afternoon, it’s the NEAR and Far Storytellers. Change It Up, the art exhibit with the work of Kathleen Curran Smits, runs through the month. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. www.buttonwood.org

It’s a full week of music and more at the Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown, this evening the CFA presents the WesWinds Fall Concert. Wednesday, the Wesleyan University Steelband Concert happens at Beckham Hall, while the Graduate Composers Concert takes place at the World Music Hall. John Cage’s Musicircus is at Crowell on Thursday. Also on Thursday night, The Gamelan Ensemble performs in Concert at World Music Hall. The Winter Dance Concert, happens at the CFA Theater on Friday, or you can enjoy the Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble Concert at Crowell Friday night. Saturday at the Goldsmith Family Cinema, there’s a screening and discussion with artist and Wes alumni Amanda Palmer and filmmaker Michael Pope along with students from their Wesleyan course entitled “The Art of Doing,” Also on Saturday you can catch the Winter Dance Concert at CFA Theater.  Sunday, they wrap up this very busy week with the Worlds of Dance Concert at Crowell Concert Hall. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, you can catch The Novel Ideas and Calvin DeCutlass. It’s a Comedy Open Mic tomorrow/ Wednesday with Dan Rice. The Love-Birds and Zero Years take the Café stage on Thursday at Café Nine. Friday’s Happy Hour features Bronson Rock, followed by a late show with China Crisis, Reduction Plan, and Falconeer. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and the late show Saturday night features Elison Jackson, Laundry Day, Grubby Little Hands, and Toyz. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown there’s a Story Time and Gift Making Workshop on Wednesday at 6 pm. The Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown hosts its monthly Makers M’ART’ket Thursday at 6 pm featuring Marc Pettersen demonstrating green screen software. Manic Presents brings Tokyo Police Club and Vern Matz to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden on Thursday. At the Ballroom on Friday, it’s Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, along with Sad13.  They bring comedian Tig Notaro to the College Street Music Hall Sunday night. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall Hartford brings indie rock to the stage on Thursday with The Empty Pockets. On Friday, it’s pop and R&B with Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals. On Saturday, Blood, Sweat & Tears returns to the Infinity stage. The Glenn Miller Orchestra performs on Sunday afternoon. www.infinityhall.com


At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on Friday, they headline CT’s very own heavy metal hometown heroes, Hatebreed, appearing with Dying Fetus, Code Orange, and Twitching Tongues. www.toadsplace.com

The Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus Holiday Concert, From Tinseltown to Times Square, happens this weekend at the Wadsworth Athenaeum with performances Friday through Sunday. It’s also Second Saturdays for Families this weekend with free admission and special activities. Their Festival of Trees Traditions runs daily through the holiday season. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Visions/Revisions: The Print Transformed, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Printmaker’s Network of Southern New England. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways has extended their held-over run of “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, through Sunday. They also continue “Bill Nye: Science Guy” and “The Florida Project,” a poignant look at summer childhood. Weekend openings include “God’s Own Country,” a love story in the Yorkshire highlands, “The Breadwinner,” about an Afghani girl in search of her father, and Polish animated shorts. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “2001; A Space Odyssey,” the 1968 classic projected in 70mm film, through Saturday. They screen National Theatre Live’s comedy, “Young Marx,” on Thursday and Sunday. “Easy A,” starring Emma Stone in a movie about ‘80’s teenage angst, is the Friday late show. From 6-8pm tonight,  it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Tonight, Tonight, Grammy award winner Paul Winter calls into the show to chat live with Bill.

At 8pm, The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry offers a weekly dose of live and local Connecticut arts and music.

From 9-10pm it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10pm it’s Wes Sports and Beyond with DJ Steven featuring Sports Talk and interviews.
From 11-midnight stay tuned for Dumpster Dive with DJ Smelly featuring punk, art pop and D.I.Y coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous
From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am
at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
