Monday 12-4-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday December 4th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, now in its fifth year! It's a progressive-minded show that airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: our guest Richard Alleva, in semi-retirement as the Catholic journal Commonweal's movie critic, will talk about his favorite Christmas films on DVD. Can't listen live? Now here's some of what's going on in our area this week:


The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown has the usual Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Rob & Terri.  Empowering yoga happens Tuesday afternoon, with Laughter Yoga in the evening. On Wednesday morning, enjoy HulaZen Yoga with Tiare Kahana, based on Hawaii’s oral tradition.  Bob Gotta holds his Acoustic Open Mic on Thursday, and it’s a double bill Friday night with Ashley Hamel and Orice Jenkins. The Aligned with Source workshop is back Saturday morning, and the evening bill features the Ken Serio Jazz Trio. Sunday afternoon, it’s the NEAR and Far Storytellers. Change It Up, the art exhibit with the work of Kathleen Curran Smits, runs through the month. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. www.buttonwood.org

It’s a full week of music and more at the Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown, starting tonight at Crowell Concert Hall with the Ebony Singers Annual Gospel Winter Concert, under the direction of WESU’s own Pastor Monts (host of Gospel Express Sunday mornings at 10am). The Chamber Music Concert happens at Crowell tomorrow/Tuesday at noon, and in the evening it’s the WesWinds Fall Concert. On Wednesday, the Wesleyan University Steelband Concert happens at Beckham Hall, and the Graduate Composers Concert takes place at World Music Hall. John Cage’s Musicircus is at Crowell on Thursday, as well as the Gamelan Ensemble Concert at World Music Hall. The Winter Dance Concert, this, but also, is at CFA Theater on Friday, or you can enjoy the Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble Concert at Crowell. There’s a screening and discussion with singer/songwriter Amanda Palmer, filmmaker Michael Pope, and students from “The Art of Doing,” Saturday at the Goldsmith Family Cinema, as well as the Winter Dance Concert, this, but also, at CFA Theater.  They wrap up this very busy week with the Worlds of Dance Concert on Sunday at Crowell Concert Hall. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, it’s Manic Mondays with Weakened Friends, Roz and the Rice Cakes, and Quiet Giant. Tuesday brings you The Novel Ideas and Calvin DeCutlass. It’s a Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday with Dan Rice. The Love-Birds and Zero Years take the Café stage on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Bronson Rock, followed by a late show with China Crisis, Reduction Plan, and Falconeer. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and the late show’s bill has Elison Jackson, Laundry Day, Grubby Little Hands, and Toyz. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday.  At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Racial Justice Book Group meets on Tuesday night to discuss “The Street,” by Ann Petry. The start twenty sessions of Girls Who Code Club meetings on Wednesday at 6 pm, open for girls grades 6 through 12. Award-winning author William Mann will speak Wednesday on his book, “The War of the Roosevelts.” The Friends Book Sale happens this weekend, starting on Friday. The Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown hosts its monthly Makers M’ART’ket Thursday at 6 pm featuring Marc Pettersen demonstrating green screen software. The Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus Holiday Concert, From Tinseltown to Times Square, happens this weekend at the Wadsworth Athenaeum with performances Friday through Sunday. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Visions/Revisions: The Print Transformed, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Printmaker’s Network of Southern New England. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its held-over run of “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, through Thursday. They also continue “Bill Nye: Science Guy” and “The Florida Project,” a poignant look at summer childhood. Weekend openings include “God’s Own Country,” a love story in the Yorkshire highlands, “The Breadwinner,” about an Afghani girl in search of her father, and Polish animated shorts. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “2001; A Space Odyssey,” the 1968 classic projected in 70mm film, through Saturday. They screen National Theatre Live’s comedy, “Young Marx,” on Thursday and Sunday. “Easy A,” starring Emma Stone in a movie about ‘80’s teenage angst, is the Friday late show. RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard. from 2-3am

and at 3am  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica 

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
