Monday 11-4-2019 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, November 4th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. Mylène leads another Laughter Yoga session Tuesday evening, and on Thursday there’s an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. It’s blues and bluegrass on Friday with Rebecca Roudman and her band, Dirty Cello. The Aligned with Source Workshop is on deck Saturday morning, and in the evening you can catch the Frank Varela Jazz Trio. Celebrate the late Roy Lisker on Sunday afternoon in a special event with music, refreshments, and more featuring Neely Bruce and John Basinger. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Korine and Fatal Film. On Tuesday it’s Crunk Witch, Hanuting Titans, and Shy. Wednesday’s performers are The End of America, and the Oshima Brothers. On Thursday they’ve got Bangcreek Puppies, O’K and the Night Crew, and the Jeff Wickun Band. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolti, followed by the late show with The Lucky 5 and Alexa Rose. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Gary Grippo, and in the evening, you can catch Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys and Soapbox Saints. The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings you Year of the Fist and Warbats, and they finish out the weekend with the Freddy Deboe Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

The State House in New Haven hosts an Open Mic with Patrick Dalton tonight, and on Wednesday they’ve got a Happy Hour Improv Comedy session featuring The Regicides. On Thursday the New Haven music community comes together with the Ric Ocasek Tribute, and on Friday it’s a night of Positive Vibes for the Culture with a YKTV Hennesy Party. Lift returns to CT on Friday, appearing with Fixation, Spellrunner, and more. Enjoy Surf Rock Night on Sunday with Serf Blasters, 9th Wave, and The Clams. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the Lawrence Clark Quartet is featured in their Jazz Mondays session tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Tommy Whalen, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The Michael Cleary Band takes Sally’s stage on Friday, and on Saturday singer/songwriter Grayson Hugh and his band, The Moon Hawks, return with soul, roots rock, blues, and more. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight, and there’s a Kizomba Public Dance Session at Union Station. It’s Karaoke Night at The Russell on Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Off the Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives. Sensual Salsa Saturdays takes place at the Red Rock Tavern on that day, and on Sunday the Isham-Terry House offers tours starting at noon. Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, there’s an Open House Employment Information session on the 2020 census Wednesday at 4 pm, followed by Scrabble. The Connecticut Poetry Society meets on Thursday evening to continue their Poets on Poetry series with featured guest, Gwendolyn Brooks. The Friends of the Library Book Sale happens on Friday and Saturday. The library is closed Sunday and Monday for the holiday. The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore kicks off National Novel Writing Month with a Weekly Write-In tonight at 6 pm. Tuesday’s Local Author Bookstore Event features YA/Fantasy writers, including Mandi Lynn, M. Wednesday, and Grant Miller. Tom Seigel is in the house on Thursday with his new novel, “The Astronaut’s Son.” Kids’ events continue this week, including Story Time and Cardinal Kids, as well as a celebration of the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book on Tuesday afternoon. Free events this week sponsored by Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts begin on Tuesday with a conversation with the Taylor Mac costume designer Machine Dazzle at the Ring Performing Arts Hall. Performer/composer Alex Dea presents Compositions: The Secret of Overtones, Wednesday at World Music Hall. On Thursday, there’s a panel discussion titled Talk It Out: The Laramie Project – Centering Queer Voices: Documenting Trauma and Resilience, at the Downey House Lounge, as well as a talk by poet and cultural critic Lewis Hyde at the Zilkha Gallery. Manic Presents brings Beach Slang, Mandala, and Mamma’s Boy to the Space Ballroom on Tuesday. Jake “The Snake” Roberts will be there on Wednesday with his Dirty Details Tour. Jason Hawk Harris takes the Front Room stage on Thursday, appearing with Stefanie Clark Harris, and on Friday, Death Threat brings their Last Dayz 20th Anniversary show, along with Billy Club Sandwich, World Demise, and more. They headline Intercourse at The Space on Saturday, appearing with Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, and Gorge. Ani Defranco, along with Gracie and Rachel, comes to the College Street Music Hall on Friday, and there’s Morning Show Saturday with Laurie Berkner and her Greatest Hits Solo Tour. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall Norfolk hosts an acoustic evening with folk and country artist John Hiatt on Tuesday. It’s funk and Southern rock on Thursday with Trigger Hippy, and on Saturday enjoy bagpipes and more with Celtica and their Pipes Rock tour. At Infinity Hartford, Peter Wolf starts off a blues and rock weekend on Thursday, followed on Friday by Dana Fuchs, and ending on Saturday with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Toad’s Place presents The Interrupters, Skinny Lister, and Sharp/Shock on Thursday. On Friday they headline Legion of Jerry, appearing with the Kazoo Crew Family Band, The Core, and more. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Fleurs, Ditch Boys, Dangerous Animals, and The New Neighbors on Friday. They present The Defilement of the Northeast Metal Scene on Saturday with The Missing Inc., Disparager, Glass Divide, and more. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office invites you to a premier performance of “New Every Morning” by the GM Chorale Sunday at 4 pm at the Middletown High School Performing Arts Center. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

The Rockfall Foundation sponsors a screening of “Ice on Fire” at 7 pm tonight as part of their ongoing Environmental Film series. It’s showing at the Middlesex Community College campus in Middletown, and there will be a facilitated post-film discussion. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; the documentary “Fantastic Fungi”; and “Where’s My Roy Cohn,” about the political power broker who influenced Trump, through Thursday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Another Day of Life,” about the anarchy of warfare based on a Polish journalist’s memoir of Angola, through Wednesday. The matinée offering for Thursday and Sunday is the National Theatre Live performance of “Hansard,” a devastating portrait of the governing class. There’s a one-day screening of “Abe & Phil’s Last Poker Game” on Thursday night, and on Friday they open a run of “Mr. Klein,” an ultra-HD restoration of this French psychological thriller set during the Nazi occupation of Paris. The Middletown International Film Festival continues on Tuesday at the Russell Library with a screening of “Summer,” a Spanish film about a six-year-old orphan reacting to her new home in the mountains. There’s a post-film discussion with Professor Olga Sendra Ferrer. www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 1:30am it’s Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day.

From 1:30-2:30am Prominent Profiles with DJ Elliot takes a look at an historic artist that has had a profound and lasting influence on popular culture and current artists.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
