Monday 11-11-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, November 11th. WESU gratefully remembers and thanks all of the men and women who have served our country on this Veteran's Day. Welcome to the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I’ll be on this Sunday, and I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by Ashley Hamel. The Mattabesset String Collective takes the stage Friday night to bring you bluegrass, folk, country, and more. The Aligned With Source workshop takes place Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. On Saturday night you can enjoy Latin, jazz, and more with the Brett Bottomley Trio, and there’s a Reiki Share session Sunday afternoon. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Scruffy Pearles and Laini and the Wildfire tonight. On Tuesday, it’s Bonsai Trees, Wayward City, and Jake Lasz. They host a Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday with Dan Rice, and on Thursday you can catch Driving Route 9, Kat Wallace, and David Sasso. Friday’s Happy Hour features Nicholas “Flats” Flatley, followed by the late show with The Hi-Risers and Renegade Lounge. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Tony Di and Friends, and in the evening they bring you Bush Tetras and the Pale Moon Gang. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Gurf Morlix, and they round out the weekend with a blues jam with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

The State House in New Haven hosts an Open Mic with Patrick Dalton tonight, and on Wednesday it’s indie rock night with Lighthouse, Snowpiler, Shame Penguin, and Hoseman. They celebrate Fiction Kids’ Record Release Show on Thursday, appearing with Daniprobably and Spit-Take. On Friday, Wess Meets West, Glacier, Pray for Sound, and Cavallo bring you heavy soundscapes, and on Saturday, Homeboy Sandman brings their indie hip-hop Dusty Tour to town, along with Elucid, Sotorios, Old Self, and Sketch tha Cataclysm. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, the Maxx Meether Quartet is featured in their Jazz Mondays session tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Ed Bradley, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. It’s the Northeast Blues Harmonica Showcase on Friday with four touring harmonica masters, and on Saturday it’s classic and modern rock & roll with Not21. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Toad’s Place presents Forever Emo tonight with Emo Night Brooklyn. On Thursday they host Bandjam with Best Day Ever, Blank Stares, and much more. Lil TJay takes the stage on Friday with his No Escape Tour, appearing with Jay Gwuapo, and on Sunday they headline Danny Brown, who’s in the house with Ashnikko and Zeelooperz. www.toadsplace.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces a Para Dance Kickstart Fundraiser tonight at 6:30 at the Fred Astaire Dance Studios to support programs for persons with lower limb impairments, and there’s an Open House at the studio on Friday. Wesleyan University’s College of East Asian Studies holds a public conversation tomorrow, What Does It Mean to be Chinese in US Colleges Today?, at the Fries Center at 4:30 pm. The Godfrey Memorial Library holds genealogy research help sessions tomorrow and Saturday morning. The Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater presents a performance of “The Seagull” by Anton Chekhov this Thursday through Saturday. The Recreation Division sponsors a Cupcakes, Cookies & Canvases session Friday night as well as Dinner and a Movie, and a Winter Crafts workshop Saturday morning. At Conspiracy, the Nick Di Maria Quartet presents live jazz Saturday night, and on Sunday afternoon they sponsor Royal Tea with the Queens in their Women in Whiskey series to support the New Horizons Domestic Violence Services. The Greater Middletown Concert Association presents a performance of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” Saturday evening at the High School Performing Arts Center, and it’s Brunch at the Mansion Sunday at the Wadsworth Mansion, featuring banana pancakes, live music, and more. You can drop off new, unwrapped toys at the Recreation Division office for the 68th annual Bernie O’Rourke/Detroit Hunter Christmas Toy Drive or learn about how to apply for the program. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The WESU Fall Community Record Fair takes place this Sunday at Wesleyan’s Beckham Hall featuring dozens of vendors selling new and used records, CDs, music memorabilia, and more, all in support of your favorite radio station. Doors open at 10 am with a $5 charge for early birds, and free admission after 11. More details at wesufm.org.

The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight, and there’s a Kizomba Public Dance Session at Union Station. Theater Works opens a two-week run of “American Son” Tuesday evening. On Wednesday evening, Scott Wallace speaks about the Amazon’s last uncontacted tribes at the Mark Twain House West End Wednesdays session. It’s karaoke night at The Russell on Wednesday, and on Thursday afternoon the Butler McCook House and Garden holds Second Thursday Tours. The Know Good Market takes place on Thursday evening. The Connecticut Historical Society hosts Open Studio Hartford on Saturday and Sunday featuring artists from the Sewing Circle Project. BlackOut Hartford happens Saturday night at the Favella Nightclub with a live performance by Eric Bellinger. The Hartford Flavor Company hosts Crafted Hartford Sunday where local artisans present craft classes and displays. Christ Church Cathedral presents From the Countryside: Music for Strings Based on Folk Songs, on Sunday afternoon. Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore their weekly National Novel Writing Month Write-In tonight at 6 pm. There’s a Teen NanoWriMo session on Wednesday. On Thursday, they host Dr. Khalilah Brown-Dean with her new book, “Identity Politics in the U.S.,” and on Sunday afternoon they present local author Rachel Kodanaz with “Finding Peace, One Piece at a Time,” a book about grief, memories, and possessions. At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Job and Career Center hosts a workshop Tuesday night, titled the LinkedIn Profile Teardown. They also invite you to meet the Charlie Cart, a kitchen on wheels designed for innovative cooking classes, and the Russell Readers meet to discuss “Greenleaf” by Flannery O’Connor. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, and on Thursday they host an offsite discussion in their Books and Brews series at Stubborn Beauty Brewing to talk about “Northwest Corner” by John Burnham. There’s a workshop Saturday morning on how to navigate the genealogy site FamilySearch.org, and Sifu Michael Fuchs will speak about Chinese martial arts as he presents Shaolin Butterfly Style: The Art of Transformation. Manic Presents brings Liza Anne and Sofia Bolt to the Space Ballroom on Tuesday, and on Wednesday you can catch Leftöver Crack, Days N’ Daze, Cop/Out, and Videodome, On Thursday they headline Exhumed, appearing with Necrot, Judiciary, and Vomit Forth, and on Friday it’s Nostalgia Personified with All That Edition. Hiss Golden Messenger and Molly Tuttle are at the Space on Saturday, and on Sunday they bring you Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, along with Dom Flemons and JD Wilkes. They’re at the College Street Music Hall on Saturday with Liz Phair and Raffaella, and return to the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk on Sunday to bring you Ripe and their fall tour 2019, appearing with Castlecomer. www.manicpresents.com

Free events this week sponsored by Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts include a graduate recital Wednesday at World Music Hall, and a performance of cantatas by the Ad Hoc Bach collective Thursday at Memorial Chapel. There’s a guided tour of Brendan Fernandes’ exhibition, “Inaction,” Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery, and the Wesleyan Concert Choir performs Saturday night at Crowell Concert Hall. There’s another senior recital Sunday evening at World Music Hall. You can also purchase tickets for “The Laramie Project,” with performances at the CFA Theater Friday through Sunday. Infinity Hall Norfolk hosts an evening with pianist George Winston on Thursday, and on Friday it’s blues and roots rock & roll with Masters of the Telecaster. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a celebration of the iconic vocal artist; the documentary “Fantastic Fungi”; “Where’s My Roy Cohn,” about the political power broker who influenced Trump; and “The Cave,” a documentary about an underground hospital in the Syrian war, all through Thursday. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Mr. Klein,” an ultra-HD restoration of this French psychological thriller set during the Nazi occupation of Paris, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Judy,” a biopic of Judy Garland. There’s a one-night showing of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” Friday night. Sunday’s Bolshoi Ballet in Cinemas matinée offering is “Le Corsaire,” and in the evening they open a run of “First Love,” a Japanese pulp fiction/comedy hybrid. http://www.cinestudio.org

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 1:30 am it’s Influenza with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists to expose how they found their direction.

From 1:30-2:30am The Beatles: A Week in the Life with DJ McKenzie tells the story of The Beatles, their contemporaries, and the artists and songs that inspired them.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
