Friday 11-22-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, November 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I’ll be on a week from Sunday, and I hope you'll tune in.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown has jazz, both standards and originals, with the Mary DiPaola Trio tonight. The Aligned With Source workshop takes place tomorrow morning, and in the evening enjoy blues and more with guitarist and singer Tom “The Suit” Forst. www.buttonwood.org

On stage in New Haven, at Café Nine, happening right bow at their happy hour, you can hear DW Ditty, and later, Robert Gordon and The Bandidos take the stage. Their Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, and in the evening they bring you the Madame Thalia’s Vaudeville Revue. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features The Big Fat Combo and The Furors, and they round out the weekend afterwards with Lula Wiles and The Moon Shells. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Tonight at State House in New Haven Ceschi and Anonymous Inc play songs from Sans Soleil and Beyond. Catch hardcore and punk on tomorrow with Sheer Terror, Combust, Pummel, and Savage World. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, The Bruce Katz Band takes the stage tonight with blues, and tomorrow you can catch Dissident, with their tribute to Pearl Jam. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore presents Susan Jaques, author of “The Caesar of Paris: Napoleon Bonaparte, Rome, and the Artistic Obsession that Shaped an Empire” tomorrow afternoon. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings Mono and Bell Witch to the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight. They’re at the College Street Music Hall tomorrow sponsoring the Elm City Brew Festival, along with the music of Seth Adam and Eddie Seville. www.manicpresents.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown there’s a free chamber music concert tomorrow afternoon featuring Boston’s Ensemble Aubade. They’re offering Yoga in the Hubbard Room on Sunday. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office calendar reminds us The Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater performances of Chekhov’s “The Seagull” continue this tonight and tomorrow. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts presents the West African Drumming and Dance Concert in Crowell Concert Hall tonight. There are guided tours of the “Inaction” exhibition tomorrow afternoon, and in the evening the Chinese Music Ensemble, Taiko Drumming Ensemble, and others perform Music from East Asia at Crowell Concert Hall. Splinter Reeds performs new works by Wesleyan composers tomorrow night at World Music Hall, and on Sunday there’s a Worlds of Dance Concert performance at Crowell. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Infinity Hall Norfolk brings you alternative rock, soul, and more on tomorrow with Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution. At Infinity Hartford, you can catch Americana and bluegrass on tonight with Railroad Earth, and tomorrow, David Clark’s “Songs in the Attic” perform highlights from Billy Joel’s Last Play at Shea. www.infinityhall.com

From 5:05-6:30pm stay tuned for Wild Wild Live! with DJ Celiac and DJ Opal. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30 Middletown Youth Radio Project is a 30 minute weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

Next, from 7-8:30pm Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. In addition, she features health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

At 8:30 Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll invites you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly, and some new releases.

From 10-11pm Loxion Music Mix Show with M-Point brings listeners a showcase of the newest and best of Southern African Electronica dance music.

At 11pm stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee for a dose of unsigned Local Hip Hop.

At Midnight, Permanent Collection with Chris offers an hour of non-toxic creative radio.

From 1:30-3am, OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott bring a mix of contemporary and traditional urban gospel music.

From 3-5am, Back Down the Bayou with Bill Boelens presents an eclectic Louisiana and roots music show from the Banana Plantation in Baton Rouge.

And finally, from 5-6am the BBC World Report offers International news coverage.
