Friday 1-18-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, January 18th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson,  producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday from 4 to right bef re the Jive at Five. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office alerts us that to Family Fun Night Friday at 6 pm at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School with food, bounce houses, balloon artists, music and more for city kids. The City Recreation Division hosts a Royal Tea Party for kids Saturday at 10 am, and there’s a Cupcakes Cookies and Canvasses paint event at 10:30 am. Oddfellow’s Playhouse hosts a Teen Talent Search Saturday at 7 pm. There are cash prizes. And the Skating Rink in Harbor Park is open on weekends. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown announces that their Youth Gamelan Ensemble classes start this Saturday at 10 am. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Here in Middletown, at The Buttonwood Tree, tonight you’re invited to celebrate singer/songwriter Ashley Hamel’s CD release party and Open Jam for her new wizard rock concept album. Patrons are encouraged to dress as a witch or wizard! There’s a Teen Open Mic at The Buttonwood Tree on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening brings the 14th annual Composers and Improvisors Festival featuring Joe Fonda, Kevin Norton, and Taylor Ho Bynum. Poet and playwright William H Foster III takes the stage on Sunday to bring you “The Prodigals.” www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, right-about-now, The Friday 5pm Happy Hour showcase features Vangie Durst, Lydia Arachnes, and Semaphora. The Friday night main event at The Nine features Wolf Harbor, Flight of Silence, and Dizzie Pocket. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night’s main event features Joey Wit and the Definition, Pale Space, and Auguste & Alden. The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings you Sam Carlson, Alex Burnet, Pat Dalton, and Danielle Capalbo, and the evening Blues Jam features the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, this evening you can catch Stax of Soul, a band dedicated to playing the music of the legendary Stax record label. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the month. The Hartford Ballroom holds a Dance Social Friday at 8 pm for dancers of all levels. And Strange Machines and Keepers of the Vibe perform at the Arch Street Tavern Saturday at 9 pm. The Prezence, a tribute to Led Zeppelin, takes the Toad’s Place stage tonight, along with Savile Row. On Saturday they headline Legion of Jerry, appearing with EGGY and Dead Show. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you funk and jazz with Lettuce tonight/Friday. On Saturday, you can enjoy blues and more with Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford presents Rich Tobin’s “(bleep) Cancer” Birthday Celebration tonight/Friday with No Honor Among Thieves, VRSA, Soldiers of Solace, and Murder Monday. Emery Austin Smith and Orice Jenkins perform Sunday at 3 pm in The Hartford Public Library Baby Grand Jazz series. www.hplct.org

Sunday also brings Pass The Guitar, A musical evening to benefit the shoreline soup kitchens and pantries featuring over 20 acts! Highlights include Brute Force, The Carolans, Ebin Rose Trio, Post Traumatic Jazz disorder, Sue Mead, Marie Pinnette Harper & Owens Hugh Birdsall, and  more! Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Shoplifters,” a Golden Globe-nominated Japanese film about a family of thieves and an abandoned child. tonight/Friday they open Free Solo, a portrait of the free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock … the 3,000 ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park … without a rope.  
Also opening today at RAW is The World Before Your Feet, a documentary showing one man’s five-borough journey that stretches from the barbershops of the Bronx to the forests of Staten Island, from the Statue of Liberty to Times Square. Bathtubs Over Broadway, a documentary about the forgotten realm of Broadway musicals with corporate product themes and storylines.  Real Art Ways invites you to a free Community Film Screening next Monday in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. They offer three documentaries on the civil rights movement starting at 11 am. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford, is now playing “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” starring Melissa McCarthy as a fading celebrity biographer who slips into deception and forgery. The Sunday matinée Bolshoi Ballet selection is “La Bayadere,” and they open “The Hate U Give,” about a poor black girl attending a mostly white prep school, on Sunday, too. The Wadsworth Atheneum is screening “From the Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story,” tonight/Friday at 7 pm. It’s a documentary about the life of this legendary blues harmonica player. Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford hosts a Night Fall movie event Saturday at 6 pm. Right after the Jive at Five, Jack Sullivan sits in for 2 hours of drive time action with music from the 50s and 60’s and other nostalgia from the period.
  
at 7pm, the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

from 8:30-10 Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

From 10 - 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30 3  OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. present a unique mix of contemporary and traditional Christian raise music.

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
