Good evening, it's Wednesday June 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of some of the fun stuff happening in our area this week.

Thursday, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts the Middlesex Drum Circle at 7 pm, followed by the Mark Normand Comedy Show at 8 pm. On Friday, the Akron-based Gage Brothers take the Buttonwood stage. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday at 10:30 am, and in the evening jazz pianist and composer Ben Rosenblum performs with his trio. There’s a Closing Reception on Sunday for Maria Louise to celebrate her exhibition, From Bud to Bloom. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday at 10:30 am. http://buttonwood.org/

In New Haven at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday, it’s Wes Swing, Gull, and Ports of Spain at Café Nine. On Thursday they headline Chris Barron (of the Spin Doctors), appearing with Shellye Valauskas, Dean Falcone, and Peter Lucibelli.  Friday’s Wind Down Happy Hour features Buzz Gordo. Friday night’s main event at Café Nine features Danny Pease and the Regulators, Dutty Windhouse, Sky Swamp Orange, and The Screw-Ups. Saturday Café Nine’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band. Saturday night Sidestep Complex, Drop Kick Pop, an Sarah Golley take the stage. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you The Hickups and Tuesday Saints, and they finish out the weekend with a Manic Presents late show featuring The Toasters, and Slip and Fall. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam hosted by Tommy Whalen this week. It’s a New England Blues Blast on Friday with Neal & the Vipers, appearing with Carl Ricci & 706 Union Ave.  Saturday’s event is The Ze-Conn, with Brian MacDonald and al All-Star Band celebrating the music of Warren Zevon. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, you can catch Reggae singer Tarrus Riley with Dean Fraser & The Blak Soil Band tonight/Wednesday. On Thursday, it’s the music of Jackson Brown with Running On Empty, appearing with Mark Daniel. On Saturday they headline Shakedown, playing the music of The Grateful Dead and Beyond, Great Blue, O’K and the Night Crew, and Klams Kasino. www.toadsplace.com

This evening/Wednesday, Manic Presents brings Walter Lukens, Rudeyna, and the Bud Collins Trio to Bar in New Haven. At Russell Library this week, they’re screening “Moonlight” on this evening/Wednesday in their “And The Oscar Goes To. . . “ summer movie series. Russell Library offers Self-Defense for Teens with Cromwell Martial Arts on Thursday. Cultural Connections, a group for immigrant women, meets on Friday at 3:30. The 3rd annual “Blackbird” Benefit Concert is back this Saturday at 6 pm at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. This year an all-star band performs The Beatles’ “Abbey Road.” Proceeds benefit the Stephanie Nelson Memorial Scholarship Fund. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa/

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Chuck,” about resilience in the boxing world, and “I, Daniel Blake,” about the search for compassion after disability strikes. Also continuing is “Their Finest,” about propaganda movies in WWII Britain. Opening Friday is “Dawson City: Frozen Time,” rare silent films from the early 20th century about a Canadian Gold Rush town. Also opening is “Radio Dreams,” about a Farsi-language radio station in San Francisco, and “The Book of Henry,” about a suburban family with a secret. Both run through the weekend. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story,” a documentary of the storyboard artist Harold Michelson and his family. They screen National Theatre Live’s new production of “Salome” this week. From 9:30-11pm, it's  The Vault with DJ Anton Banks. Presenting listeners with the latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house, and leftfield mixed live.

From 11 to 4am it's Studio 54, starring Franco, playing all of those disco hits from the 1970's!
The BBC World News comes on board at 4am followed at 5 with Morning Edition from NPR.
