Good evening, it's Wednesday June 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.
At Russell Library tonight/Wednesday, they’re screening “Arrival” in their And The Oscar Goes To. . . series. On Friday at 9 am there’s a Summer Meals Blitz Day Meetup for volunteers and partners to coordinate the free summer meals program in Middletown. Registration is recommended. www.russelllibrary.org
In New Haven at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday it’s BJ Barham, Frank Viele, and Charley Crockett. On Thursday, Alash, and Sam Moth take the Café stage. Friday’s Wind Down Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte, followed by a concert to benefit The International Institute of Connecticut which serves refugees and immigrants. Artists include Witch Hair, Sam Carlson, Bilge Rat, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show headlines Lea and Swamp Yankee. The Sunday Buzz Matinee theme is Songbirds and Songwriters and includes Lara Herscovitch, Kate Callahan, and Caroline Doctorow. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam hosted by Tim McDonald this week. It’s a record release party on Thursday for the new album from Cruz Machine. Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

On Friday The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts singer/songwriter Kerri Powers. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday at 10:30 am. On Sunday it’s comedy with Cloud 9 Improv & Friends. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, you can enjoy Americana and pop on Friday with Josh Ritter Works in Progress. On Saturday they bring you Kiss the Sky – the Definitive Jimi Hendrix Tribute. You can Enjoy the City of Middletown’s Fireworks Festival this Saturday starting at 6 pm from 2 locations, the Municipal Building on DeKoven Drive and Harbor Park along the river. There’s music, food, ice cream vendors, and children’s activities. Live entertainment includes the The Cuban Salsa sounds of Los Sugar Kings, Sweet Daddy Cool Breeze with Jaimoe of the Allman Bros. Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are opening the 2017 season again. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Dawson City: Frozen Time,” rare silent films from the early 20th century about a Canadian Gold Rush town. Also continuing is “Radio Dreams,” about a Farsi-language radio station in San Francisco, and “The Lost City of Z,” about a British explorer who discovers a lost civilization in the Amazon. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Monterey Pop,” a documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of this iconic Summer of Love concert, and “The Book of Henry,” about a suburban family with a dangerous secret. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “A Woman’s Life,” based on the 1883 novel of a young girl’s journey from the convent to aging motherhood. On Friday they open “Moka,” a psychological thriller. http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after The Jive at Five stay tuned for an hour of Latin music from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, starring Isabel.
6-6:30pm it's Your Mind Matters with Helen Evrard MD. We explore the brain conditions known as mental illness from a holistic viewpoint with guests who study them, treat them, or are affected by them.
And from 6:30-8pm, stay tuned for Fusion Radio with James Fusion. The original ... and still the best damn Techno mix on radio!

Starting at 8 and running until 9:30pm, it's The Warehouse with Mike Nyce. The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.
From 9:30-11pm, it's  The Vault with DJ Anton Banks. Presenting listeners with the latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house, and leftfield mixed live.

From 11 to 4am it's Studio 54, starring Franco, playing all of those disco hits from the 1970's!
The BBC World News comes on board at 4am followed at 5 with Morning Edition from NPR.
