01-04-17 Jive

Good evening, it's January 4th and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of what's happening in our area this week:
At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown you can catch  Bob Gotta’s long running acoustic open mic continues this Thursday at 7 pm. Friday at 8 pm the Hartford Story City troupe takes the Buttonwood Tree stage. Annaita Gandhy’s Aligned With Source Workshop happens on Saturday at 10:30 am, with this week’s theme of Opening Up to Divine Grace & Joy. The jazz/blues quartet Bop Tweed performs at The Buttonwood Saturday night at 8 pm. On Sunday at 3pm, John Basinger continues his ongoing of the Live performance of Milton’s Paradise Lost - Book 1. Tonight/Wednesday, down in New Haven at Café Nine, there’s a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice tomorrow / Wednesday. Thursday night Steve Mednick & Hard Road share a bill with Rob Carlso & Benefit Street.  The Café Nine weekly 5pm early set this Friday features Lynn Malavolte & Dave Duffy. Later Friday night, Psychoala, Strawberry Cheesesteak, Coastal Notion, and Flight of Silence take the stage.  Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session at 4pm is with Mike Coppola and Friends this week. The Saturday night main event at Café Nine features The Proud Flesh, and Pat Stone & The Dirty Boots. The Sunday Buzz Matinee at 3 brings you Long Live the King! A tribute to Elvis. The Greg Sherrod Birthday Bash happening later at 8 pm. www.cafenine.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Thursday, The Sally’s house band, The Po Boys are on deck for a night of boogie-woogie blues rock and roll.  Saturday, night  Cafe Nine presents The New York Blues & Jazz Society’s Best Artist winner, The Danny Draher Band, live on stage. www.blackeyedsallys.com

Manic Productions brings Mates of State and Laundry Day to Bar in New Haven tonight/ Wednesday. Thursday Manic presents Big Thief, Twain, and Zanders at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden and Sunday they’ve got Squirrel Nut Zippers, appearing with Davina and The Vagabonds at The Ballroom. www.manicproductions.org

At the Russell Library in Middletown this Saturday, they host UFC legend Chris Lytle presenting Lights Out On Bullying at 11 am. Free signed copies of his book, “Lights Out,” will be given to participants. Find details of these events and more at www.russelllibrary.org

Infinity Hall Hartford, presents progressive rock and Rush tribute band Lotus Land Friday night. On Saturday, it’s the cast of Beatlemania at 8 pm. Infinity Hall Norfolk presents The Will Evans Band with Special guests Whiskey Treaty Road Show feat Jeff Howard performs at Infinity Hall Norfolk Friday night. Saturday in Norfolk, Infinity presents Albert Lee with Atlas Grey.  Sunday Sessions! Live music in the Norfolk Bistro featuring Allysen Callery, this week.  Details at www.infinityhall.com

For some loud rock music, you can head over to Cherry Street Station in Wallingford for a night of heavy Metal on Friday with Everybody Hates Me. The Art Guild of Middletown hosts the Opening Reception for its fifth annual Exhibit of Artwork by Members this Saturday from 2-4 pm at the Portland Public Library. The exhibit runs through the month. www.middletownartguild.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: 

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its run of “The Eagle Huntress,” a documentary about a thirteen-year-old girl who becomes the first female in her family to train for an eagle hunting festival in Mongolia, through Thursday. Real Art Way’s Film 101 Intersession series continues on Thursday with a screening of “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” Robert Altman’s 1971 film starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie as newcomers who bring a brothel to the Pacific Northwest. Trinity College’s Cinestudio reopens Thursday with a run of “Loving,” based on the true story of the interracial couple who take their fight for legal marriage all the way to the Supreme Court. It runs through Saturday. On Sunday they bring back a run of “A Man Called Ove,” a bittersweet comedy from Sweden about a lonely retiree forced to adjust to his new noisy neighbors.  www.cinestudio.org

At 9:30 it's The Vault with DJ Anton Banks, presenting listeners with the latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house and leftfield mixed live. Featuring exclusive music from international artists.
And at 11pm to 3am, it's  The Studio 54 Disco Mix with Franco .
From 3 - 4am it's The Hour of Slack from the Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry. The compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.
At 4am you can catch the BBC world report before we kick off tomorrow’s program with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
